    I have spent 14 years in the sportive BJJ realm, but began under a Gracie Academy certified instructor. After ordering their program to revisit the self defense aspect last year, I assert that this is the single best way to get a solid foundation in the art. That foundation can stand on its own, or provide an unbelievably excellent gateway to pursuing the more sportive BJJ taught in most school today, if one so chooses. Best instruction around.

      Paulo - - couldn't agree more. I trained some (nowhere near as much as you) at other schools and didn't learn basic headlock defenses, punch defenses, etc until GU. I was one of those awful people that "earned" his blue belt online before the switch. I have always been uneasy about it and still am, but was stunned at how in depth and accurate my evaluation was from the grader of my video. He pointed out errors that I didn't see despite reviewing it several times before submitting it. He also noticed my deliberate conviction when applying the techniques. I tried to give each move some "pop" to the extent that precision didn't suffer. They very much noticed that.

    Everyone has the freedom to choose how they want to learn Jiu jitsu. Someone learning via Gracie University can effectively defend themselves against an attacker. The whole concept of this is to get Jiu jitsu into the hands of those that want it. Who cares if they can train in an academy down the road. Not everyone wants that. Is it wrong to give them another choice? Is it wrong that some people get their schooling done online? It's all about the freedom of choice.

    As someone who lives in the country who has no BJJ option within 2 hours drive this guys case is exactly where I find myself (although he has clearly already solved the problem).. I will be starting GU soon, I need to create a space for sparring and find local people interested first.. For those out there naysaying, the guys shown in the video have used the GU knowledge themselves to train interpersonally (in person) using online knowledge; the only missing piece is a physical black belt instructor nearby, they do however have rolling partners and they learn from each other as they go, very impressive leadership shown by the individual who started the at-home gym.

    I have been considering this online program and this video and others have convinced me to start. I think the program has matured to the point where we are seeing people who have been at it awhile and are on par with people who are training with a live instructor. I'm sure there are examples that prove the opposite. But anyone who has trained in a dojo knows plenty of people don't make it there either. It comes down to attitude and desire.

  • @arama0010

    Some interesting debate here.
    From my personal experience (learning only from RUclips and applying myself) online information works, with reflection and repetition.
    Could I beat a blue belt at your school? Maybe not.
    Could I defeat an unarmed, single opponent in a street fight? Confidently, yes.
    I can apply sufficient pressure to put someone unconscious with a front and back choke;
    Sufficient leverage to break an arm, wrench a double wrist lock, and twist a heel the wrong way.
    I can defend such manoeuvres.
    I can also escape mount, side control and back control against larger, taller and heavier opponents.
    Such basics, intermittently "training" and spontaneous in nature, has taken me 5 years to somewhat "master" (though, of course, I am no blackbelt).
    Gracie Breakdown has been a platform where I have probably learn't the most.

    I recommend the online classes, particularly as supplement. I did the Gracie Combatives (BB curriculum) online with friends at my house. I also simultaneously trained at a local BJJ school (unaffiliated). I can say that every video lesson noticeably improved my technique. I have a great in-person teacher but the instruction on the Gracie videos is truly excellent. The details are amazing. I earned my Blue Belt from my local school. On vacation, I also trained for a couple of weeks at a what was a Gracie Garage that had just turned into a certified training center. The guys there rolled really well and were equal in skill to the fellas I trained with locally. The cool thing about the online only students was that their technique was near flawless and used no brute strength. Some of the guys as my school often rely on explosiveness and force.

      Hi Reginald, Rener did this video about 7 years ago and now I’m about to turn 50. I was having a look at it for one of the first times, I had a laugh at some of the comments and thinking most of these kids are lazy and have had Jiujitsu handed to them. I have trained almost twice daily for 11 years in Jiujitsu, I have studied lessons daily, traveled, had countless training partners sparred 4/5 times a week. I did start the martial arts back in 1985 so I already had the discipline to train hard, sorry it’s soft in Jiujitsu ha ha.
      I saw your recent comment and thought I’d reply for the first time in this RUclips video.
      Since that video I have opened up a CTC school, traveled to GU in Torrance CA over 10 times, received my brown belt in July 19.
      GU has given me/us a path like no other. I have grappled with many great Jiujitsu fighters, purple to black and have always felt more than capable. If you are remote ‘like me’ you can still advance to a high level, you just need to be willing to never give up.
      Here is our web site www.gracieuniversity.com/shepparton or go to our face book page and check us out. Gracie Jiujitsu Shepparton.
      Hope you have an amazing journey also.

    I train at a gym, but I supplement that with watching videos from the online university. There is no doubt in my mind that someone can learn Jiu Jitsu from home so long as they go to a gym when they can. The level of detail, and the organized lesson plans allow people to learn from home as long as they have a partner and are dedicated. Don't be close minded to new ideas. One thing that should be added to this whole debate is that the Gracie CTC's test for Blue Belt on a peer reviewed system. If you train at a CTC, your test is still video recorded and uploaded to the network of testers (which are other ctc certified instructors) for evaluation based on the performance of the moves. Your instructor doesn't pass or fail you, others who don't know you grade you. So whether you test online or at a ctc, you will be evaluated via video by the testing team. This means there is less bias, your instructor can't promote you just because he likes you or thinks you work hard, you must know the moves asked for. It eliminates the belt factory effect. It also means, you could be great at other moves and dominate on the mat, but if you don't know the moves on the test, you won't pass rank. Your rolling ability doesn't play into it and it also means they can't feel your pressure or tightness, just interpret from what they see. However, the instructor wouldn't probably wouldn't advise you to shoot the test if he didn't think you were ready. This is only for the blue belt, not for higher ranks as I understand it.
    It's an interesting testing model that has upsides and downs, but I think it fits the purpose of the G. combatives training. I'd like to see people in other BJJ organizations discuss and consider the model. Just thought people should know as I saw some misconception below.

    • @jims512
      @jims512 7 лет назад

      Bingo Todd! I've said it a few times on this page. My evaluation and comments from my tester were incredible. He noticed errors that I made that I never saw despite reviewing it several times before submission. I thought I made at least a 96% but made a 92%. Their feedback was very detailed. They also noticed my conviction with application of the moves. I tried to give each technique some "pop" and they commented on this as well.

    To answer the question in the title: No. Its promoting Jiu Jitsu, Self Defense, self improvement and helping your fellow man, woman or child. Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and indeed any other reputable, effective martial art fits that description to a "T" and is journey worth undertaking for anyone who wishes.
    I watched and listened to this video 3 times to make absolutely sure I didn't miss anything. There is NO mention whatsoever of Sales, Income creation or anything even remotely related to it. The ONLY portion which could be construed as such it the FUTURE goal of opening a Certified Training Center. What is also discussed is the currently operating Gracie Garage, and its members and their children. ALL of which is FREE to the members, and participants.
    SO: To those who rail and cry and whine about "selling a product", or "propaganda", or "on line belts", or "making income" or other such Socialist crap: Stick to being a keyboard commando and take it somewhere else. You contribute nothing to society except negativity and ignorance of the topic in general. Shut up, go away and spew your venom and hate to your cronies and live your sad tiny lives as you wish. Just leave reasonable, intelligent people out of it entirely. THAT should be relatively easy for you lot, considering what you do on sites like this all the time.

    I began studying Gracie Jiu-jitsu in the 90s from the original instructional tapes provided by the academy in Torrance. After practicing the techniques on the tapes and working them live with training partners, I attended a week long camp in the Poconos taught by Rorion, Royce and Grandmaster Helio himself where I was awarded my blue belt. If learning from video wasn't possible, my blue belt wouldn't have been possible. I certainly couldn't have learned all that in a week, no matter who was teaching it.

Despite being a little skeptical deep down, I did it this way because A) I was curious and B) I didn't have another option - - I had to train early in the AM or not at all. The curriculum is great, detailed, and places emphasis on street self-defense. I trained at other schools before starting GU and it wasn't until GU that I learned how to get out of a head lock, defend from punches while in vulnerable positions, etc. I think the adaption for testing just solidifies what they were already building

It's their life, their history, and their passions. As a pure GU student I say its an incredible platform to learn jiu jitsu .. I wouldn't have been able to access GJJ otherwise . Last year I was finally able to join a jiu jitsu club that's in the next city to me and being honest the quality of GU is even better and its just catered to make you get a full understanding of techniques etc ... So please if u didn't try it out don't judge it also they added new system to make sure not anyone can get belt promotions which also hopefully shows you it is actually a legit thing and in my opinion even better than most jiu jitsu clubs out there

  • @The1911Review
    @The1911Review 9 лет назад +2

    I definitely appreciate that they moved the testing for belt promotions to on-site only. There are factors that just can't be measured in a video (timing, conditioning etc.). They are on the right track with that in my opinion. The instruction is also of a very high quality, some of the best attention to detail on techniques I have ever seen. All that being said, I still prefer training at my school, in person, on the mat, with my BJJ family. However, I won't diss those who are training like this until I roll with one of them and find their skills deficient. Once I have that hands on experience, I will form my opinion, otherwise I am just being hypocritical (judging whether the program is good by watching videos on youtube, when we are saying the program isn't good because it's only videos).
    I think this is all a learning experience even for the Gracie's right now and in the end, honestly, I hope they get it right because all that would mean is more students, more tournaments, more attention and overall more people finding the good life through BJJ like so many of us have.

    I am one that has been drawn to Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I believe one of the Gracies should go down there for at least one week to instruct the students so it shows there are wanting to promote their art. And help this man more to spread there teaching of jujitsu. Much respect to this man making an effort to learn.

    I dont understand people, if someone gets a blue, purple belt online it does not diminish the value of YOUR belt.What do you tell someone who lives 2-4 hours aways from a BJJ school? '' Sorry Helio's dream isn't for you'' or "Move" Really. Gracie university isn't perfect no system is but its a solution for people who don't have a certified school near them or work impossible hours to train. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand the need for online learning unless you live in this bubble where you think everyone lives in a big city.

  • @jasonklein5821
    @jasonklein5821 9 лет назад +5

    Who cares what anyone else thinks about GU or training from online videos? If you like it, do it. If its not for you, then don't. All systems are artificial at some point. Rank in any system is a form of commercialization, period. But there is nothing wrong with that nor is there anything wrong with use modern means to learn anything. All that matters is that you learn.

    • @jims512
      @jims512 7 лет назад

      True. I would prefer to train at a school but life has given me other priorities - especially during the evening hours. I have to train early in the AM and also want a primarily self-def game, so GU is for me. I also respond better to a more structured curriculum.

  • @jasonklein5821
    @jasonklein5821 9 лет назад +1

    On another note, I am glad GU is offering these online programs. Its good stuff and sure beats the hell out of the prices that most BJJ schools are charging around the country. Most schools that I have been at ask 200-300 a month which is ridiculous. The sham isn't GU, its those prices that every BJJ brown or purple belt who owns a school charges for their self inflated worth.

    Much respect for Scott and all the Gracie University students. Many people undervalue the amount of dedication that you need to study GJJ through GU. It is important to understand that GU students have to practice with other guys anyway. The computer is only a tool not a training partner. Yes, is probably much safer than train in a BJJ school but what's wrong with it?
    It is not a matter of where you practice, is a matter of what you learn. GU shares something that could safe lifes around the world and I think the Gracie brothers are doing it at the best way possible.

    I have been very critical of the Gracie Academy. I used to be a blind follower and after really watching a few of their videos and listening ot what they were saying, i realized that I don't agree with them 100%. I've come to understand this is OK, that I am not the blind sheep kind of person and it actually helps me understand BJJ a lot better. As far as the online learning, I don't see why people complain about it? It's another way to learn. We are almost 100% digital now and here's whats funny, in five years, others will be doing it and calling themselves the first ones to do it.The students who do the online learning should take it one step further and enter local tournaments. They should test themselves by driving a few hours to roll with a full on school.Truth be told? I've been to some schools that had a BB instructor and he was crap. I've been to some schools that had a blue belt coach and he was super legit. How you learn isn't as important as applying what you've learned. Oss!

    everyone is so caught up with belt promotions and status. the belt i respect are those that exhibit real belt status expertise. people can spend x amount of hours refining the techniques but not really apply it in live roll is like a person learning to shoot a gun for self defense but not going to a live range to practice under stressfull situations. thats why its important to go live and roll in real situations. to put the reps in perspective. im a former fighter an ex muay thai and ametuer mma fighter. i put many hours on hitting the pad and light 50-60% sparring with fellow camp members. it wasnt till my very first smoker fight in my career that thought me alot about recollecting everything i learned and apply it during a stressfull fast paced situation. and thats what Gracie University is about. I come from a garppling nogi sub only background. but GU helps people to take baby steps. crawl, walk and then run. GU teaches real combative situations you will encounter 80% of the time out in the real world with untrained people. GU combatives through rapid exercise help create second nature muscle memory reactions. (fight or flight being your first natural reaction). if one does repetitive practice and incorporating live roll at times once a week. that person not only has muscle retention with what is learned but is more likely to succeed in real live situations. i can never forget growing up watching many TKD instructors live sparring and having that wide eyed scared look in their eyea when everything they preached didnt translate on the floor. train train. go live. train. stay fit. be passionate and remain hungry.. quick advice tho. squeeze some no gi sessions. lots of grip and pull with gi. up your game with no gi and add more to your arsenal with squeeze and pinch. GU works and anyone who tells you otherwise because its online are just mad they didnt start that way. oss

    I love how people say you can't learn, if it's online. what about real colleges offering online classes. Do you not get your degree, because you took some online classes...? YES!!!!! YES YOU do. I'll make it even hard for people to think the Gracie University doesn't work. Before the internet, when I was a child, before 1993 when we haven't even heard of GJJ/BJJ. I learned from the Black Belt Magazine, if you're a little bit older, you know what I'm talking to. I learn how to get out of a head lock, picture by picture and I did use it in the locker room in 8th grade and it worked! I am a Police Officer, I am a Gracie University member and if you can learn from a book or magazine, you can learn from online. where do you go when you have a simple ques you don't know the answer to.....online. If you are lucky even to be able to attend a Gracie Academy in real life, then you're a lucky person. Don't knock the people who don't have a chance to go to any school, but are able to at least learn from the best instructors (Gracies) in the world via the Internet. It's sad but true, when you are the best there are some nasty people out there who will always come for you. It will happen in a tournament when a big named grappler loses to a Gracie University student, mark my words.

    It's funny as I watch this ridiculous controversy over live learning vs. video learning continues ENDLESSLY. What I sense is an odd jealousy by those who attend an actual school, that somehow they're better at what they do. It's strange how the humility aspect of the art has been sorely forgotten. I'm not sure why this is even an issue. It's no skin off their back if someone chooses to learn by another means. I was actively trained by over 10 martial artists in traditional and modern martial arts schools for 15 years. At that point, desiring to learn a style that wasn't available in my area, I started VHS study and was quite successful advancing steadily. Is everyone capable of learning without an instructor? Probably not. But for many like myself, and this guy in the video presented here, it's entirely possible. For those of you who are in a school, I say great. But why don't you spend more time worrying about yourself and quit worrying about how others achieve their goals or chase their desires.

    Actually, the competition focus is ruining BJJ. Doing techniques that are only useful for competition, but dangerous for self-defense without any self-defense focus goes against the original Gracie philosophy. Also, how influential is the racie Academy in the BJJ community, especially in the percentage of practicing students?

    I think it really depends on what your goals are. If you are looking to be a high level competitor in Jiu-Jitsu, then Gracie University is likely not going to be your best option, and you are better served signing up at an academy where you can roll with tough competition consistently. If your goal is simply to get in better shape while learning self-defense skills that could save your life one day, then I think Gracie University is a very viable option.

    I think anyone who thinks badly or even says hurtful things to anyone that is trying to better themselves needs to reevaluate their mindset. Im assuming that a lot of the negative comment are from people that train. And thats sad because Jiu Jitsu has taught me, among other things, respect for everybody. Im sorry your "great" schools didn't teach you that. I don't know but I assume GU teaches respect as well.

    I'm not a fan of this global appraoch, but the content is decent. ANd if it gets more people into the sport, why not.
    Ruining ? Not necesarely, changing and commercializing, yes. Is that bad? Not my place to judge.
    TO counter it, others just need to get better and prove their better. That will balance things out.

    • @MyZ001
      @MyZ001 Год назад +1

      Just remember that 90% (made up number to prove a point) of the people doing BJJ now wouldn't even have the chance to train in it, if they Gracie's didn't promote it and commercialize it. Now, its just a new-era way of doing it, compared to what they did in the late 80s/early 90s. As long as they're aren't giving out real belts online anymore, Im good.
      Everyone shits on them for trying to make it more popular/accessible. But, because most people training now never really had a problem with access to it, no one pays attention to that the only reason they can train it in the 1st place is because of those same type of efforts.

    • @masterchief9064
      @masterchief9064 9 лет назад

      I don't think so. I know several mates who train at other clubs in the same area and it always takes them a long time to progress. I'm not quiet sure how it is at other clubs, but I guess it stresses the knowledge/training over belt colors?

    • @DemiizeLol
      @DemiizeLol 9 лет назад

      Tony Di The Gracie white belt promotion system is one stripe for every 20 hours of training. So you can take your Blue Belt test after 100 hours of training. After that, You get one stripe for every 100 hours of training. If it took your friend YEARS before getting his Blue Belt then it's because of HIS school. Maybe he was rolling at a Blue Belt level but his school has strict promotion rules.

  • @joshuakeeler82

    I think its a good thing for the popularity and profusion of bjj. It will have quality issues as any correspondence class would. It has created many blue belts who by most competition standards are not up to task. But hey.. If they aren't against bjj then they are for bjj.

    GU is running into the same problems and criticism online Universities like University of Phoenix are running into. The biggest problem most people complain about is the earning of a belt but, does it really matter? Say you are looking for a doctor to get treatment and you find two available one of the doctors graduated from the University of Phoenix and the other from Harvard which would you pick? Well, let's just say for many the Harvard doctor is not available so UnP it is cause a little is better than none.

    If people learn from books, then people can learn from online. Kids literally do wwe moves from simply watching wwe. The only thing I am concerned with is ego. I encountered a female cop yesterday who bragged that she is a blue belt in Gracie Jiu-jitsu and thinks she can make me tap. I told her maybe she could. I could maybe make her tap as well. Case and point , we all have egos , but I do think all of us should try to control our egos. Alot of people , like the female cop, who are Gracie Jiu-jitsu students act like they are invincible. None of us are. My only thing I am concerned about is ego judging from my experience around Gracie Jiu-jitsu students.

    Gracie University makes GRACIE Combatives available to the world. Many people such as myself would not have this opportunity available to them without Gracie University. Most BJJ schools are offering sport JIUJITSU, and that's great. But I'm more interested in Self Defense than Competition. And I believe Gracie Combatives are offering the core techniques Grand Master Helio Gracie used to make Gracie JIUJITSU as popular as it is today. ..So you ask "Is Gracie University Ruining the World?"...My answer & oppinion is NO!... I think it is the opposite and perhaps one of the last BJJ schools teaching GJJ as it was intended by SGM Helio Gracie and therefore benefiting all schools of BJJ!
