Puerta del Sol and Gran Via
It is the center of Madrid and the absolute reference point of the city, in fact it is the starting point for many tours because it is in the center of everything and not far from anything.
The area is very commercial and at the same time very bustling. During the day it is ideal for shopping, visiting tourist sites and at night it is full of theaters and very close to neighborhoods with great nightlife such as Chueca or Malasaña.
If you are looking for a lively area, you like to go shopping and you prefer to be in the center of everything, this is the ideal neighborhood.
The counter? It is one of the most expensive neighborhoods to stay.
    the Asturias
Very close to Puerta del Sol we have Madrid de los Austrias, which was formerly the center of the city and, as such, has an impressive historical heritage.
The area itself is a tourist attraction with its picturesque little streets and squares.
There are, for example, the Almudena Cathedral, the Royal Palace, the Plaza de la Villa and the famous Plaza Mayor. The Mercado de San Miguel is a must-see.
    The neighborhood of letters
Away from the Sun and very close to the Paseo del Prado, is Huertas, better known as the Barrio de las Letras, for having been the home of many Spanish writers such as Cervantes and Lope de Vega.
This neighborhood maintains the bohemia and charm of the past with its small streets and cobblestones, and even in Calle de las Huertas you can find engravings of poems on the sidewalks.
    Malasana
Now we go to another wave, Malasaña, although it is one of the old neighborhoods, has a very young energy, and is a bit of a center of the alternative and underground scene in Madrid.
There we can find second-hand shops, art galleries, graffiti on the walls and a very cheerful, multicultural and cosmopolitan atmosphere.
If your trip has more to do with the discovery of new cultural movements, Malasaña is your place. It is also possible to find good accommodation at a very good price.
    footbath
Another of the neighborhoods of Madrid preferred by young people is Lavapiés.
This neighborhood just over 20 years ago was a bad neighborhood, to be honest, it had all the problems together, but since then it has been changing and improving so much that today it has become a must-see in Madrid.
It's super multi-cultural. Many immigrants choose this neighborhood to settle when they arrive -in fact, I lived there for my first month in Madrid, because it offers the warmth of the communities and it is still one of the cheapest neighborhoods to stay in.
    The Latin
Actually La Latina, although it is a place taken over by young people, is one of the most traditional neighborhoods in Madrid, and it was the old Arab neighborhood.
It is a very picturesque and very photographable neighborhood, with its narrow streets and romantic squares, where the famous Rastro Market is also located.
What else does La Latina have? Bars, many bars and restaurants and cafes on the terraces and music on the sidewalks.
If you like to go from bar to bar and you love the nightlife, this is your place to stay. And just like in Lavapiés, it is a place where you can get very good prices on accommodation.
    The Retreat and Salamanca
We go absolutely to the other spectrum, with these neighborhoods near the Parque del Retiro and Plaza del Colón, with wide green spaces, a more stately architecture and a much calmer atmosphere.
The problem? They are considerably more expensive, Salamanca particularly because it is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Madrid, with luxury boutiques, select restaurants that target a more mature public. But nevertheless the tranquility, the architectural and urban beauty of these neighborhoods and the proximity to the center make them very eligible, especially for that type of public that is not so young and/or with greater economic capacity.
    Chueca
It is certainly the liveliest neighborhood with the most nightlife, attributed to being the meeting place for the LGBT community, although of course everyone is welcome. The atmosphere is always party.
As for accommodation, there are from hotels to hostels to Airbnb flats, in all price ranges.
But what is good about Chueca is not so good, because the constant festive and happy atmosphere and the music at all hours is great fun but also what can make rest not entirely good.
