Henk rocked . He did this all for Floor. He did the distortion just for the song. This is the first time he has done it.
Yep. She wanted him to sing it in Disturbed's reimagined style
Yes, and in the leadup before he took the stage to sing he announced that he was going to do it that way. The Disturbed version is fast becoming the defacto standard for that song; especially since Paul Simon was so complimentary regarding it when it first burst onto the scene. In the first verse the similarity of his intonation to David Draiman's is almost surreal!
Henk was scared to do it but he did it for Floor
And he nailed it big time
The eyebrows and look he gave Floor at the end was both meaningful and hysterical to me.... "That was for you Floor, not bad for an amateur rock singer huh" ?
Henk Poort is both highly respected professional (Floor calls him "THE Henk Poort"), and funny, charming gentleman, earning the nickname "Uncle Henk." Just an amazing singer and an amazing man.
That Buddha comparison was about the best description of this performance, the master showing the kids how it should be done :)

As to be expected from you, of course, a very professional approach, loaded with so much respect for the artist!
The thing I love about this performance?
He NEVER EVER goes to his comfort zone. He's a classically-trained tenor, with a ton of experience in both opera and musical theather. But he starts low, and understated. When he needs to up the stakes, he goes into the distorted metal range. Which he claims he learned how to do in only a few days. Yet he nails it, and, yeah, looks totally relaxed doing so.
Henk is supposed to join Nightwish on stage duing one of their shows. Can't wait to see that recording! 🔥🔥
OMG!!!! This was amazing!!!! I got goosebumps for the first time in a long time. Love that he's covering Disturbed cover. I think I like his cover of the cover even better.

Baritone with a tremendously strong high register. This has become my favorite version.
It's indeed very nice to see him sitting there totally relaxed but at the same time bringing this wonderful performance as a gift to a friend, throwing in some new styles because Floor will love it, and because he can.
Henk Poort learned distortion in 2 weeks with his coach. He did it only for Floor. He mentioned when he does it in operas he would be instantly fired.

One of the things I really loved was how his acting history bled into this performance with his facial expressions and his body language with the leaning “attacks” for lack of a better term before pulling back at the very end 😊
He took ownership and made it HIS and that along with his amazing vocal performance made me believe this is his song from now on 👍

Great analysis. Henk is an Icon in The Netherlands. Please analyse his duet with Emma Heesters. A very young megatalent imo.

Emma is fantastic and sooo young..
There is a goddess sitting on the couch and in front of her her big idol sits on a bar stool and sings one of the most beautiful songs in history especially for her in a rock version - in these few minutes 100,000 more people could have been there, and yet these two stars would have been all alone in their room.
It is not a competition. It is just famous singers singing each others songs, just for the joy of music.
This is delightful. His tone is very pleasant and Floor's delight is evident and sweet to see. Also, yay to his courage to step out of HIS box of comfort and use the distortion in his voice (I suspect in part because of this being based on the "Disturbed" version of the song, but also to please Floor, who is clearly delighted), all while maintaining perfect control. It comes to show how it is never too late to experiment and expand one's toolbox and learn new ways to uses one's craft! He is a little intimidating ... but his little smile at the end was cute and even a bit self-deprecating. Sparkling notes, yes. Speaking of, I love the little tree behind you: its silvery sparkling putting an added sparkle in your eyes. :) How fun!
wow I loved your reaction to this song by Henk Poort I've been researching Floor Jansen and NightWish and found this thumbing threw some covers Floor did on Beste Zangers 1st time i heard it was last night while listening to a tribute to Floor on Beste Zangers it was about a 53 min RUclips where all of the singers did a song for Floor everyone of them just crushed the tune they picked for her Henk went last he was very worried about doing sound of silence because he is a opera singer in his duet with Floor "Phantom of the Opera" he tested distortion in 1 of his versus's so he decided to show case the "growl/distortion" in his song to Floor "Sound of Silence" since I watched it last night i have listened to it about 40 times then of course I see your reaction to it so 41 times hell he has decades of Opera singing who says he can't tickle his craft a bit now he absolutly kills this verssion I've never heard anything like it and i know this tune Simon and Garfunkal and the rock re make Henk Poort takes it to a new level loved it

Henk, he is some guy! A great voice, talented but also curious and very approachable. One of my daughters sings for the love of singing and she had some experience with him. A 'friendly uncle' type of man, she called him, appreciating every effort, stimulating, advising, inviting.
In the last episode of 'Beste Zangers' he sang a duet both with Floor and Emma. The way he adapted to both ladies and the type of duet he performed with them clearly shows his flexibility as-well as his talent. An admirable and lovely guy.
So yeah, your comment was spot on.
A sensational breakdown of this masterpiece. What I find exciting here is that you have dug into and discovered the beauty of the Zangers and a format where talent honors talent with song. Very nice! One small note about Phantom of the Opera, though: while Henk did play that role for many years, on this show was the first time performing the Nightwish version of the song :)
I love this reaction where you break it into parts when I listen to him sing I can feel each time he hits "it" like a punch in the chest it is such a powerfull preformance sort of like he was born to sing this song to Floor Jansen I can't get enough of it thank you so much

So glad to get your take on this outstanding performance! It's really inspiring to see such an accomplished singer go out of his comfort zone and try something new. My understanding is that Floor basically taught him how to sing with distortion backstage, and he picked it up that quickly. Mastery of the fundamentals goes a long way in singing, it seems!

being out of their comfortzone is one of the reasons that this show is all about. The singers need to sing songs out of their comfortzone.

Amazing group of musicians!!
Yeah the singer show last year made more joy then all other years before. In the Netherlands this show is already for many years, but somehow this particular year the production found the correct unusual set of singers to join the program.
And for Henk Poort, hé was already a master back in the early 1990’s when he was actually performing for many years as the phantom in the musical of the phantom of the opera.
I remember at one point even the original producer of the phantom of the opera said Henk was the worlds best.
I don’t know if that is true tho or maybe he told that to all the world wide phantoms.
Nevertheless i have seen Henk Poort already a few times in his theatrical career in various roles and always he amazed me. Not one time he failed my expectations of his songs.
And it is fun to watch you analyze the songs.
Today I watched 3 videos from you. Nightwish’s Greatest show on earth, ghost love score and this one. And to be honest I enjoyed to listen to these songs differently when you analyze the vocal parts.

Hello Christi, as always a good evaluation of the contribution. As you pointed out at the beginning, I am of the opinion that this would not work in any other country. To bring a bunch of professional singers over 8 weeks into a camp without a competition idea. On the contrary - here the singers have the "order" to honour the one who sits in the hot seat next to the commentator. And there were a lot of very good contributions. Each of the participants was "forced" several times to leave his comfort zone and do something he had never done before.
To Henk - as you so aptly stated in one of your last videos - you never stop learning... but only if you get involved in something new and are willing to learn. Henk - as a representative of the classical genre - has never sung with rasp in his voice in his life. The classical faction would have stoned him to death. But - for the love of Floor - he got involved and put a contribution on stage that doesn't have to hide behind David Draiman. He sits there like a budda and his shoulders don't move a millimeter during the whole show. This is also proof of his extraordinary abilities.
No matter for which piece of music - or also contributions to the study of music - you decide... I am already looking forward to your next video. With you one does not only get good reviews on music videos but can also still learn something for life... And that makes you unique in the RUclips community. Stay as you are and don't let the mainstream take over you.

Like most people from outside Holland I came to this show via Floor as a Nightwish fan and was blown away by both the format of the show and the quality of all the performers. As people have mentioned, the Henke and Emma duet is definitely a must watch but i've also delved in to previous years that the quality is just fantastic. I think my favourite is the duet of Tania and Tommie doing Barcelona in 2017 is possibly better than the Floor/Henke duet but thats personal preference. I really liked the ‘Disturbed’ version of it. He did it live on Conan and it was impressive. He has so much vocal fry at the top it’s really good.
The show started off as a kind of competition. "You got a gig but you get sick, who should you call to replace you?". That's why in each show a performer is in the middle and the others sings songs of that performer or related to that performer. In recent shows there's just a toast on the performer who impressed the host the most.
Already for 13 years.. every year a joy to watch. Some artists performed even more the once..
From this same episode Emma Heester's version of Floor's "Strong" and Tim Akkerman's punk-rock version of Nightwish's "Nemo" were also phenomenal.
Some of the translated conversations going on with the participants outside of the stage, Henk is called "Uncle Henk." I guess he quite a jokester. It makes him all the more great in my eyes.
Some examples of how in this show the artists sing outside their comfort zone; Samantha Steenwijk - Mama (Official Video Clip) normally sings Dutch ballads. Her song is sung by Mrs Jansen, Floor Jansen - Mama | Beste Zangers 2019.
And Samantha shakes her hair with, Samantha Steenwijk - Just The Way I Do | Beste Zangers 2019, a song from Tim Akkermans.
Also very nice to react to is; Emma Heesters & Rolf Sanchez - Pa Olvidarte | Beste Zangers 2019. Simply because it is a nice song and because of their playful chemistry.
Now that you have become a fan of Henk Poort, Henk Poort - Your Man | Beste Zangers 2019 is also nice to react to.

Watched both Henk Poort and Floor Jansen a few times now they are both very good .I see in comments about K Z T,you all so done one on Mr Tengri from singer 2018 , Can i suggest the first western singer to be invited to the contest, Jesse J she also won it with 47% of the vote.Not bad for a little old London girl. (1.2Billion watched the the last show.
I believe that in the full episodes of this show, he mentioned many times he wants to have new experiences and even today learn new things to do with singing.

It is a very interesting program to watch. There are six singers for one week staying together on Ibiza and every evening there is one singer in the spotlight. They sing songs which are presious to the person in the spotlight. So the songs go quit deep for both the singer as he performs being on a small stage in front of the singer of the evening. Nice story about the Phantom if the opera is that it started to rain and thunder came. So while they where singing you can see rain poring down from the canvastent where they where standing. Nice to watch some episodes of Beste zangers.

@3:37...When he sings the word "voices"...It's not just that it's pure, with pure tone, perfect pitch, and extreme power...It's so...dense...The only thing I can think of to compare it to is holding down a sustained note on a synthesizer. It sounds like he could just hold that note for a year if he wanted to...

Great reaction. It would be great to hear you react to Nightwish - Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean live from Buenos Aires at some point. It features Floor doing some really interesting things with her voice. In a few verses in the song she rapidly shifts between different vocal tambres multiple times in a single section, and so far very few vocal coaches have noticed or talked about that aspect of the performance in their reactions.

Unlike to Floor who is a powerhouse herself, I love how Henk was getting off his gas pedal to get Emma back in contention at the end. Henk selected that Italian opera hymn because he knew that it suits Emma's voice best.

Henk is a beast! I can see how he's looked up to even by other professional singers.
Have you listened to Song of Myself (Wacken 2013)? Floor demonstrates some low range singing there, and of course higher range.
He's doing the Disturbed version. This is exactly how David Draiman sang it.

One thing missing from every reaction so far, including this one, is that he's singing without feedback. No earbuds. He's the only one on the show, and I don't know any other pop/rock singer who does that. Am I wrong? Maybe nobody notices it because it's not as special as I think it is? Is it expected from someone with a theater/opera background?

He's an opera singer, they don't use mics in opera so he would be perfectly comfortable without needing additional feedback. JMO

Singers have to use in-ear monitors when there's a rock/metal band blasting behind them. A singer has to hear themselves and that gets really difficult when singing with a megawatt rock/metal band. No way any orchestra can achieve the power of an electronically amplified rock/metal band. Once used to them, they become a requirement, even when not necessary.
As good the duet of Henk and Floor was, the duet with Henk and Emma was my favorite. The best of this whole season.
I think this show could work in the US, IF they got 2 or 3 superstars on the show.
I have to ask, have you seen the Disturbed version of the song? Disturbed on the Conan show does much the same in singing from the seated position. If you havent seen it I would highly recommend it

Very good, but Disturbed that did it this way first... is insanely good. I think my problem with this version is... it feels like he is just singing. With Disturb, he is feeling... way more emotion in it.
David Draiman's arrangement gave the song the power and majesty that it needed to convey the weight of sadness and eventual anger that it is meant to. Kudos to Henk Poort for attempting it!

Nice reaction. If you watched the rest of the episode, you'd had seen that Henk was very quiet for the whole episode prior to his performance. It was very untypical for him. Well, the reason was that he was so nervous about singing live for the first time with distortion (Phantom duet was the second time). His nervousness went off in the end when he winked at Floor.
But I agree his voice is incredible and I enjoyed the song. But I also agree to Rosannasfriend that this version was too close to David Draiman's version in order for me to have chills like I have listening to the cover by Disturbed. Very good first try but David has sung with distortion for years.

I think that the moment he sat down and started to sing he relaxed, otherwise he could not pull this out of his hat if he was nervous.
It is very common for people (think of athletes) to be nervous before they have to perform, but as soon as they start their performances they just switch to their performance mode.
Henk Poort is a very professional singer with a lot of experiences build up over decades so he knows for sure how to handle his nervousness.
@@komkwam My father was a singer and he used to say if you're not nervous before you go on then you are no good ... and if you are nervous once you are start then you will be no good :).
