My first exposure to the amazingly unique voice of Venus Dodson, was our duet on Atlantic's Phreek album, "Everybody Loves A Good Thing". So, when Patrick asked me for songs for her own solo album, I jumped at the chance. "Shining" (written by James Calloway, Bruce Johnson and myself), allowed us to create a song through which she could spread her wings and let folks hear what kind of 'chops' she really had. To say that I was impressed and stupefied by her work, understates the matter considerably. "Floored with socks knocked clean off" is much more accurate. Leroy Burgess.
Leroy Jackson-Burgess thanks for sharing ;) this groove was sampled on a house track in 1999. i have the record im just trying to remember what it was.. i think it was this record: www.discogs.com/Various-Bakchich-EP-4/master/522548 "everybody shine" on this 4 track EP samples this record!!!
It's my Turn was the cut. Flaws and all. Slow that tempo way do. those strings and harps the keys. Would have outflancked "Heartbeat" ooh well that the nice part of organic music. Seeds.Peace
Your work has helped to inspire newer generations to find their voice....Venus knocked the socks off of the delivery, but you and Messrs. Calloway and Johnson laid the foundation. XO
This is what you call DISCO... WHAT A KILLER TUNE... sing that shyt Venus... damn this trax takes me back... miss that era in music/life.. HUGE IN THE NYC! @lesargistanais KEEP EM COMIN! Port!
In N.Y. we had The Paradise Garage & Larry Levan. In N. J. we had Zanzibar & Tee Scott. The best of both worlds..R. INTERNAL. PEACE , TEE SCOTT, LARRY LEVAN
Iam proud to say that I own a promo copy of this very well produced slice of Paradise Garage Larry Levan peak time sure shot jumpoff !!!! This one right here knocks hard !!!
I think Shining by Venus Dodson was one of the best club tunes released in 1979. I was a shy 24 year old who Always danced to this song when DJ Tito played this Tune at the Club House in DC. What is Venus Dodson doing now?
iv'e been to the Paradise Garage just once and while i don't remember all i heard that night i can tell you from the flow of this tune that it's Paradise Garage material for sure!!!!! iv'e heard this at the Shelter (pre 95) and thinking it was either Sylvester or him with 2 Tons Of Fun (Plz don't ask, because i can't tell you LOL) But yeah this has Garage written all over it.
I wonder how long it would take to listen to all of the music of the African diaspora,we never need no help,I wonder who gets the royalties, from all these ageless spiritual music of the African diaspora, (Black music is poetry in song and Black is Power)
this record was covered/remixed reintroduced to modern dancefloors in the late 90s on the french basenotic label www.discogs.com/Various-Bakchich-EP-4/master/522548 with the cut "tiko - everybody shine" - this is how i first felt this groove.. discovering the original years afterwards
Thank you GOD is always Blessing. 59 there the first night PARADISE GARAGE. GOD is always Blessing Married to a beautiful man that I was dreaming of every night drugging and dancing
I'm guessing it was to get some slip and slide on the dance floor. In my grandparents day they used French chalk. On the Northern soul scene in the UK we used talc (same thing - different name to describe baby powder) You never wore your leather soled dancing shoes on the street if you were a serious dancer.
Vale Apena Ouvir De Novo Voltando No Tempo Ótimas Lembranças 🌌
