imagine having never designed an album cover before, then painting (arguably) the best album cover ever designed, then immediately dying afterwards. barry godber, what a bright star indeed
As we say, fuckin'-A right.
The best of all is too much, certainly amongst the best.
a fuckin' badass indeed
@@El_Andru what would you posit?

This video is good, I can’t even try to deface it with a shitty JoJo reference
Nobody sees a dark tower reference coming
But _It Just Works_
I love how he gives us the backstorys the references to jojo characters
YOPP!
@@keepermovin5906 a man of culture
That mid section with the layers of faces was stunning to watch. Had to go back and just enjoy it a few times. So awesome!
Incredible album, incredible artwork, great video as usual! Keep em coming!
man the animations are amazing
Love the fact you recommend liberty air 2 pros! I have the regular ones and they are amazing! Nice change of pace from always seeing raycon on youtube
I've always been kind of curious about this image. It's one of my favorite albums of all time, and the cover's tortured face at is at once repulsive yet draws you in with its grotesque features. You can almost feel the scream.
2:50 reminds me of that scene from jojo part 5 with diavolo, even better because his stand is king crimson.
Thank you.
I find it fun to draw album covers. I wish I could make music.
I wonder if you’d have anything to say about the late John Prine who we lost last year. Or Jim Croce
I just bought this from a yard sale
The square aspect ratio is so fucking smart
Didn't like it
@@skan5728 🙄
It sure is, but I must say, it can get annoying on mobile since the RUclips app puts this aspect ratio in vertical when going fullscreen
@@marianolaguzzi that's my only issue with it
@@LaMarcGasoldridge same, other than that it's cool
Confusion will be my epitaph.

*One of the greatest albums of All time, Long live crimson*
The fact that these next concept videos are gonna be in the same ratio as albums is genius. 👍🏾
Faxxxxx
YES
@William Magee Normal aspect ratio for videos makes a rectangular video. Polyphonic is using a square aspect ratio to match the shape of the album artwork being discussed.
@William Magee The ratio of an album cover (LP, CD, digital, etc.) is a 1:1 square ratio, and to further emphasize the art form of album art, Polyphonic will make the Album Art concept videos in that ratio.
it would be better if the editing and entire feel didn't look so corporate
Album artwork is so under appreciated now with the digital age. One of my favorite parts about vinyl records is seeing the album cover and special gatefold art that accompanies it.
Have you watched his video on the beauty of degraded media? He talks about how part of the appeal of vinyl covers is that they age and no two are ever the same. You should definitely check it out if you haven't already
Plus the back art you would never see unless you got it on Vinyl.
Cut and paste and generic fonts killed it
"i talk to the wind" is arguably one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Hautingly beautiful.
And Epitaph
Itwop is amazing, whole album too
What a coincidence, I literally started listening to King Crimson's work for the first time last night.
I've been listening to them for a couple weeks now, their music is great. Wsit until you get to albums like Red and Decipline
@@dunebug233
Lots of gems in the lizard to starless days too
Me too, just last night I put on the album for the first time
Stephen King named his major villain from the Dark Tower series "The Crimson King" after them.
Didn't know that. thanks
I always wondered if that was the case, but I never found proof of that info, can you provide me with a link or something?
Oh Discordia
A major villain from the anime jojos bizzare adventure also has a major villain with sort of a ghostly shadow of him named after king crimson, with its face resembling the scitzoid man. Neat stuff.
@@dunebug233 Yeah the JoJo comics were how I got into King Crimson and now they're like one of my top three favorite bands
I would like to know about the cover of Miles Davis Bitches Brew
Good shout. Take a closer look at the cover of ‘Abraxas’ by Santana to see an evident connection between the two artworks (same year and possibly artist - so maybe not a total coincidence).
@@steliosposeidon6871 yeah, Mati Klarwein did both album covers, as well as a bunch of other albums from the likes of Earth Wind & Fire, The Last Poets, Gregg Allman & The Mooney Suzuki

Having 1:1 aspect ratio was honestly such a good idea for this.
I really love the album art of In the court of King Crimson, it just... speaks to me. An intelligent mind plagued by how overwhelming the world is just the character, the narrator who sings all this. Just beautiful.. thank you for this.
*In the Court of the Crimson King
Prog rock has some of my favorite album covers. Artists like Roger Dean defined the look of the genre.
There's a reason I use his work for profile pictures everywhere I go on the net. Such colorful fantastic scenes, I love them!
Roger Dean and Rodney Matthews art slaps severely, just got 3 Asia CDs for the art :)
I certainly hope to see a lot of Roger Dean in this video series!

It would be cool if you'll talk about the relationship between Tool and Alex Gray's art in the next episode
I watched a documentary on Alex Gray in Uni and the whole time I was going "wait... is that??? Is that Tool???"
Especially the 10,000 Days album... with the 3D glasses and crazy packaging
He could honestly do a whole video on 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum
That would be so cool! I was just thinking the other day how cool a Polyphonic TOOL video would be!
@@kaylubproductions4517 he already did a video about lateralus (song) and the math behind it
Jesus. Todd in the shadows, trash theory and polyphonic on the same day!
oh god thank you for bringing this to my attention
It would be really cool if you analyzed some of pink floyd's album covers. I feel like their covers have so much to say.
He said everything there is to say on DSotM in his miniseries, so I think he should do Animals.
I usually have In the Court of the Crimson king at the front of my record crate. Great music, brilliant artwork.
Little Creatures by The Talking Heads has my favorite album art. I’d love if you made a video discussing it
"No one can escape the fate that was chosen for them. All that remains is the end, where you all will perish. Eternal greatness only exists only within itself. -Diavolo
KING CRIMSOON!! -BRRRRRT-
FuKc the JoJo fans are here.
Who is Diavolo?
@@IHavePlayedPersona2 lmao that name
I say this as a Jojo fan: can you fucking not?
This was so interesting. As an artist, this is something I would love to do.
now i dont want to be that guy, but. i noticed you put multiple album covers from various bands and like, 5 or 6 in a row are all names of JJBA pt.5 characters. then you used similar imagery to the punishment that Diavolo (the user with the stand King Crimson) had to endure at the end. i’ll be that tool but, was that a JoJo reference?
Please stop
Classic prog album art is some of the best stuff I've seen. 70's Yes, the Moody Blues' first seven albums, Golden Earring's early 70's output, Genesis from Trespass to Lamb Lies Down... Truly amazing stuff. I'd love to hear more of what you have to say about those.
Also especially love The Mars Volta's album art.
Idk if you ever knew this but The Mars Volta's first album art was done by the same guy who designed Dark Side of The Moon's prism artwork!
@@Aquatarkus96 I didn't know that actually. That's pretty rad, might have to look into other bands he's worked with because Deloused has a bloody brilliant cover, and Dark Side of the Moon is so iconic.
This is my personal favorite and one of the very few albums that I would call perfect.
I recommend everyone go listen to it from start to finish after watching the video. It's an experience.
Hello from north wales.
Agree with you 100% word for word!
Love early Crimson, sinfield lyrics, and later
Palmer james lyrics.
Transport you to a different place, never tire of them.
Listen to LIZARD, 3 times in succession, a fantastic
musical experience!
They lost me after RED, and believe me I’ve tried.
Lots of people like it though.
Take care.
good idea! looking forward
Hope you get to Roger Dean soon! He's the artist behind my profile picture, and did some gorgeous work for Yes, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Asia, and the studio Psygnosis' video game releases. I love his use of color and mixed medias.
Roger Deans one of my biggest art inspirations I love his work sm :')
I thought he hadn't listened to any of their music before making the cover, which is way Lake was shocked to see that it represented a Schizoid Man... because none had listened to that song yet.
Huh, weird, the video just keeps skipping.
Funny jojo laugh
As qn avid listener of king crimson this is so true it hurts
In before the jojo flood
You've gone into depth about "Dark Side of the Moon" already, so I'd like to see a breakdown of the artwork for a "similar" album, for an album that is vastly different musically, but takes the same approach of the structuring of the album, and thusly used very similar motifs in the cover art..
"Colors" by Between the Buried and Me.
The mountain from Haken next please
Every Van Der Graaf Generator album’s art could have its own ep
the square aspect ratio is genius dude
I'm already loving this series.
If I could nominate an album, it would be "Houses of the Holy" by Led Zeppelin for it's inspiration and for the accidental creation of it.
Wait till Tool hits the fan. Crimson King a huge influence.
U2's Achtung Baby would be an interesting video, as you could research all the separate pictures on the cover.
That would also mean you'd have to do Exile on Main Street at some point too.
Awesome, mate. 😎
One of the greatest albums oat
I don’t think that you linked the sound core link in the description, or I’m just blind.
Really good video but it kept skipping 10 seconds every time you said king crimson
Do “Eat a Peach” by the Allman Brothers, front and back covers. A lot of myths and fables about that cover relating to Duane Allman’s death.
For me, this album cover has always been the most ingenious one that has ever been created. That expression of mere fear and anxiety combined with the uncomfortable feeling of tightness due to the close view on that screaming distorted red face is just so perfectly displayed. It is as if you could hear him scream and feel him being torn apart by his own never ending pain.
It is so sad that we lost the genius behind that piece of art at such an young age.
Polyphonic started a series about album cover?
I mean... FUCK YEAH!
Death - The Sound of Perseverance album art
Great idea for a series. I think the album "Bat Out of Hell" by Meatloaf would work. I remember being transfixed by the art as a kid... then years later I actually listened to the thing! Wow.
"This is...Requiem"
2:36
Both Polyphonic AND Middle8 videos in the same evening?! Wow, how cool is that? :)
Would love to see you do MJ’s Dangerous album
The Court of the Crimson King is (and probably always will be) one of my favorite prog rock songs
Please please cover... Thick as a Brick... also Van Der Graff Generator Pawn Hearts... and yes also Tarkus... of cause Ummagumma, Gentle Giant Acquiring Taste and... damn this is what happens when you start to cover Prog Rock
Excited for this series
Edit: the killers have cool album covers, especially battle born, but the other ones are great too
This sounds like a really interesting series
Amazing concept. Such a shame about the croaky voice at the end of every sentence. Makes it unwatchable for me. Probably just a weird hang-up.
I have 200 framed album covers I love the art. King Crimson is over my right shoulder on video calls. Mothers of invention weasels ripped my flesh is over the other. Rzzzzz.
Great idea in doing an ORIGINAL You Tube vid. I never wanted to own this album, although I knew the music. I just couldn't get past the hideous album art. Thanks for the breaking it down. Now I understand. I can't wait for you to break down the artwork on Yes, Moody Blues and other album covers!
More youtubers need to play with aspect ratio. Its an amazing effect.
He screams for he doesn't even know what King Crimson does
Edit: I actually own the album myself but I had to make the obligatory joke
Huh it's weird that Jojo fans haven't even take over this comment section

They wanted something to stick out and boy does it do the trick. Even today.
20 minutes into prog rock and chill and he gives you this look
I love album art. I have an entire wall in my apartment dedicated to display my records that I deem worthy of the wall.
the segue-way into the ad was too smooth. I thought the video was still going on and when you never returned to the topic, I sort of felt like something was left out. Incomplete. #constructivecriticism
Starting the series with KC could have not been better. Awesome!

It is so sad that Godber died. The only KC album covers that look great are this one and Red.
what the hell? this video was definitely not finished and doesn't feel complete at all. You really just put together some crap to lead to an ad?
this video is 6 seconds shorter than 21st century schizoid man
anyone else only know about king crimson from jojo part 5?
Am I blind, or is the link for the headphones missing?
Is it possible to have the actual video player be a square shape? That would be cool
In the court of the Crimson KINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
For me, 21st century schizoid man is the first metal song.
Only took a few years for something on King Crimson, but worth it.
I love this new serries already. Amazing idea
So hyped for this miniseries.!
That is a cover that grabs you by your shirt and screams in your face.
Absolutely loved this video and the concept for the series. Semi-related, but I'd love to see a video on the history of prog rock as a genre, similarly to tour video on the origin of heavy metal.
Be there AND be square 😳
I love how king crimson just works
