  • @gcuthbertson1352
    @gcuthbertson1352 Год назад +40

I picked it out right away that the "pitch" on the first piano is not A440, but is in fact tuned a whole tone low. I checked on my Steinway D and confirmed this. This makes the "A4" 392 Hz instead of 440Hz. This is much lower than the "Mozart" A4 which would be 415Hz (typically).
So instead of hearing the lyrical middle section in the usual "Db+" pitch as written, you are actually hearing her play in the key of B+. Besides her amazing technique and musical interpretation as always, it is a remarkable feat to play a piece where the hands and "inner ear" are wired to hear the usual pitch, and then compensate for the music being a whole tone lower.
The other pianos that she plays are also not "on pitch" except for the second piano. They varied to some degree, but not as low as the first piano. The last piano was perfectly on pitch at A440.
I'm also impressed that she was able to still perform the piece on the variety of actions that no doubt are not in "perfect regulation" and would have a very different touch from one piano to another. That is not easy to do, and demonstrates her masterful ability to quickly adapt to the instrument to keep the music going. Most people have no awareness or experience of what a pianist needs to be able to do across the spectrum of keyboards, and she demonstrated the enormous flexibility and adaptability she has to have to pull off this feat.
BTW, I'm a profoundly deaf man (I can't hear my Steinway with my natural hearing) and require powerful hearing aids to hear at all. Yet I'm a reasonably accomplished pianist (but not nearly like Valentina) and also a piano technician that has tuned many pianos as well as rebuilt a number of them, including my own 1915 Steinway D. I'm also a piano teacher for my main livelihood.
Having played and taught this piece, I knew right away that the pitch was "wrong" on the first piano, as it did not match the pitch I know in my head. Nevertheless, this is a lovely video recording, albeit with some pianos having an "old and tired" sound that I encounter from time to time when tuning the vast variety of pianos I come across. The last piano was the best overall.
Very interesting video with the variety of pianos in different pitches of tuning.

@@tebaldo1935 in this case the piano is old so friction in the holes of iron deck is lower, hence lower force on strings. With all due respect to the Horowitz's and Cliburn's and Gould's, Valentina Lisitsa is the greatest classical pianist on earth. Her touch, her presentation, her ability to reach inside the music...combined with a physical technicality that is almost beyond human...makes her the only pianist I listen to any more. She brings the music alive in a way no one else does.

If you just listening to one pianist you make it your reference and reduce your ability to apreciate more subtilities. However your statement sounds veey very strange and personal to me. What about Cziffra,, Argerich, Samson François, Brendel..... each one i quote has something typical and universal at the same time, that cannot be done better, VL has not such a thing, to me , what makes her different is something flat and less, with kind of a no soul syste that work a bit. Even in the extraordinary performances like the Liszt totentanz, that I love to listen from her, i still can feel this emptyness... maybe it is a character but to me it is far tom relevance. Just my opinion

Wonderful performance! Yes piano manufacturing space has consolidated but there are still unique sonic diversities between different major brands. You got Yamaha (including Bosendorfer and its own unique sound), Kawai, Steinway, Fazioli, Bechstein, and others - they are all different and have unique sound profiles. I also listen to Jazz and especially in Japan they have hundreds of Jazz clubs and venues all trying to differentiate themselves with different pianos installed. You get to experience these sonic profile differences when you follow the same artist and hear them play the same pieces on different branded pianos and there are worlds of difference. But I think in a classical world it's much more narrow scope of differentiation at prestigeous venues.

And different old pianos have for certain a more different way to do it, compared to other old pianos. Perhaps one can say that old pianos have more of a personality than new pianos? But I also think with that personality it perhaps occures more problems than wanted? Thank you Valentina for this interesting lesson about old personalities. And always interesting to listen to the sound of old beauties.

If someone wants to know how to tune an (especially old) piano just aks me ;)
I "found" an C. Goetze upright made in Berlin or St. Petersburg, around 1910 or similar.
Found a note inside "repaired 09/10/18". This was 2017. So i did another repair of nearly everything and took it home.
Repaired and tuned it some more and finally was able to learn to play again.
I had learned to play on an electric piano when i was a child and did not play for 25 years after that.
Such a joy to have a purely mechanical instrument without power button, humming transformer inside,
    awful keystroke, flat sound ...
Listening to Valentina is a even greater joy - as always!
And especially the Becker produces a sound that is so much more free, vibrating, enjoyable than all Bechsteins, Boesendorfer and of course Steinways ..

Oops. I thought it was a Bechstein. But I love the adventure. This is great. Brilliant idea. Your playing is marvelous.
