Malaika Mihambo landed among the all-time greats after a dominating performance in the women's long jump final.
Sitting uncharacteristically in seventh place after the second round, the 25-year-old German blasted down the runway as she approached the board for her third attempt and sailed through the still, warm Doha air before landing farther into the sand than she ever had before. Looking up from the pit, a smile instantly appeared. She knew it was a good one. And it was, a 7.30m leap which, when the sandy dust had settled, landed the 25-year-old just one centimetre shy of the all-time top ten.

Why wouldn't they show what Mihambo's final jump was? It was legit and didn't receive a red flag. I hate when stuff like this happens. It was 7.16 if anyone is interested.

@@feelspecial9084 Her third jump was 7.30 m (25:05). I was specifically talking about her sixth and final jump which is shown at the very end of the video (32:00). Her sixth jump was valid but results never shown. I looked them up and included them in my post. Below are all six of her jumps.

5th round 7.09 m
6th round 7.16 m

They don't include her second best jump of 7.16 in the video? 7.16 is probably not only her second best jump of this meet but probably the second best jump of all long jumpers for that entire season. I still want to see that jump even now. It is a shame.

it's ok, the sand is soft enough so it doesn't hurt really. apart from that, you can injure yourself in every sport, i don't think longjump is worse than others
@That One The long jump pit in my citys track is much narrower that the olympic ones. Take your own conclusions
I tore my completely ACL and a bunch of other ligaments in my knee doing my last jump. Now I have to get surgery

4th Place Tori a Bowie wow! After just coming back the track and injury. Haven’t competed on this event for years and making it 4th place is a crazy achievement. Right decision to not run the 100m. With the Olympics move for next year. She will more time to heal, train and practice her skill on 100m, 200m, 4x100 and Long Jump.

Mihambo's got the perfect tall and lean body for this sport, her light body doesn't throw her backwards, and so after she lands she slides forward,rather than fall backwards.

the girls are FIGHTING - I cringed at their pronunciation of her last name, too. She may be from Hungary, but dad, or grandpa must be from Vietnam. The last name Nguyen in Vietnam is like Patel in India, or Smith in the U.S.. It’s extremely common.

@@tofuuuuuuuuuuuuu It's mostly because of the English language; it's just got a sound set that is very different from most languages. The commentator also pronounces the German name Heike Drechsler like High-key Dreshler, while it should be High-keh Drexler.

I'm just spit balling here...but what if we don't care if the foot isn't over the line? What if we just measure the distance from where you launch yourself? Would this produce better results since it's one less thing you need to worry about?
totally agree with you. that would be totally possible these days with the cameras and the slow mo. i understand they didn't do it back then since they couldn't have measured the starting jump point precisely, but that would be no issue today.
Interesting thought, but the current system adds another element that adds to the challenge. I don’t think it’d be as fun to watch. If they do it for long jump then they could start with other disciplines like the 100m, if they start early then subtract that time from the race? Interesting thought though!

this video makes me wanna get up and try some new techniques. i’m 13 and today just jumped my personal best (12’ 9” or 3.8862 meters). i know i can do better, though. that was my only good jump of the season, but then again i’ve only done about 5 long jump jumps this season. and haven’t done long jump since 2 years ago. (my best 2 years ago was 11’ 4”) but it’s 10:53 pm so i better go to bed. BYE

Funny how 30 years ago 7.30m jump was great but not a big deal. You had Heike Drechsler and Jackie Joyner jump that in their sleep.
