- The Singapore Army will equip all active combat and combat support units with its new light machine gun (LMG) by the end of July. The Colt Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR) 6940E-SG replaces the Singapore-made Section Automatic Weapon (SAW) Ultimax 100, which has been in use since 1982. cna.asia/3Y2crA5

It's an M4 with extra steps got it.
Unlike Straits TImes sending a reporter who only shoot weapons for fun of it.
CNA sends someone who atleast has experience and knowledge on weapons.
I am not sure he can shoot - but the helment on him really looks bad !!!
Yeah, pretty much like the ATF with "enough" knowledge on weapons. 😂
every male singaporean citizen is required to enter national service so they would definitely have at least a small amount of knowledge on guns
Looks like a modified M16
Because it literally is
@@spdfatomicstructure The M-16 is cycled by direct impingement and the IAR by piston. All AR pattern weapons are cosmetically similar and can share accessories.
I mean... It is...
Yes it is, the entire colt IAR is basically the upper receiver, the lower receiver is still AR 15 pistol grip
It literally is
The stats are misleading, because it does not say why. IAR is not a miracle weapon. Lighter by 600g is probably mainly because of the shorter barrel. It has worse round ballistics than the Ultimax, higher effective range is because of the sights. Things like P-rails and accessories (sights, grips, folding stocks, shorter barrel) can be easily added to the Ultimax. But things like the Ultimax constant recoil principle and more importantly not being dependent on others for arms cannot be so easily replaced. Only main difference is the Ultimax is open bolt vs IAR closed bolt. What can the IAR do that a similarly configured Ultimax cannot do?
In short, I think there may be reasons for the buy, and it may not be solely due to performance of the weapon. What's next? Replace the SAR21?
The improvement of the red dot 3x scope vs iron sight of the Ultimax is huge though. While it is possible to redesign the Ultimax to add these things, it will definitely take excessive time and money, knowing the efficiency of the SAF. I think we are adopting a similar shift in doctrine as the US from more raw firepower (M249, Ultimax) to more precise firepower. Same reason as why the US Marines ditched the M249 for the M27 (based on M416). Moreover, I heard the Ultimax was really prone to stoppages. In terms of recoil for the LMG, shooting in bursts makes it quite manageable. Replacing the SAR seems quite unlikely though, it's lighter and gets the job done.
@@chuarh7393don't need to redesign the U100 because we could have gone for the later models such as the U100 mk5 onwards.
But I supposed MINDEF has done their homework in choosing btw the Colt IAR and the later U100 models.
@@chuarh7393 Almost everything you said can be done by modifying the U100, it's not hard to p-rail and add bling to a gun. Except the stoppages (maybe all those we used in NS were old?) and the slight accuracy advantage in semi auto because of closed vs open bolt. Then again, accurate semi auto fire is not the role of the squad automatic weapon is it? I personally can't see any advantage that is so big that it warrants all the costs and tradeoffs.
Although I agree with this, I would say the COLT IAR might have better overall reliability and performance. Both the COLT IAR and ULTIMAX mk 5 went through the US selection competition for their future IAR (Infantry Automatic Rifle). Through the process the Colt IAR which went through thousands of rounds and a lot of terrain torture was deemed to be most accurate and reliable with the least malfunctions. It basically won the competition in terms of best gun but due to its cost the H&K M27 won the bidding for it's price to performance ratio. This results cannot be accounted to biasedness, because at the end the German M27 was chosen in it's place from its american counterpart. It's likely that this was the reason the IAR was attained by Singapore and despite it's poorer muzzle velocity Singapore jungle warfare orientation is unlikely to have firefights more than 500 metre meaning a barrel with 2 more inches is unlikely to do any good. Additionally blanks and constant recoil systems are not very good at working together due to its fine tuned nature so the bolt doesn't hit the rear meaning the IAR is better suited for firefight training too. A modern ultimax is unlikely to beat the IAR in such aspects.
As seen with M4, even with it's short barrel it's adequate to fight over the long distances in Afghan, if heavier firepower is needed that's the point of a medium machine gun, m240b and in our case the GPMG. Although our gpmg is in desperate need of a modernization.
However I'd like to add I would still prefer the ultimax haha the constant recoil system is in my opinion too cool to for-go, I believe the gun should be placed into another role like the m249 and as seen with the mk9 and it's belt fed nature I think it perfectly fits that role of being a high capacity machine gun to lay suppressive fire instead of just precise firepower.
@@RatSayingWoosh I think the M4 struggled a fair bit in Afghan during long distances. Have watched some videos about US veterans mentioning that the 5.56 just doesn't have the stopping power for long range distances but the Taliban who were using PKMs and AKs with 7.62mm rounds could still threaten them. Hence why the US now has an intermediate round size btw the 5.56 and 7.62mm to combat this issue.
Even the US Marines rejected the colt IAR infavor of the hk iar. Why r we buying something rejected by others?
Colt IAr performed well in the trials. The Army just wanted a belt feg LMG, this was magazine fed. Colt IAR has been adopted my multiple nation's and performed well.
Two reasons.
One: Its a great weapon system that does the job.
Two: Unless Singapore has the same ungodly defense budge the US Army does to develop and procure new rifles like the XM7. You guys are getting a cheaper option of a weapons platform that has seen the US military through decades of war. And the veterans come home and bought the civilian versions of those rifles. Because we love it that much.
Just because something is rejected in a trial competing against other weapons doesn't mean it is not great
While the Colt IAR might not have met the US military rigorous qualifying standards that they were aiming for, it is still an effective weapon system in the end
Who cares?! You get a third hole to make it go Brrrrrrrrrr. Plus it's a proven platform and easy to maintain.
Singapore already had a great lmg
The best!

Pretty much based on the AR platform. Time tested with so many options to choose from. Its almost kinda boring if you been around guns in the US. Literally can be built with off the shelve parts. The Recce LMG upper comes into mind.
This made me giggle, thank you for posting this!
If you add a similar scope on the ultimate 100, I believe it can accurately hit targets at 600m. It is possible to shoot single round using Ultimax 100, it is a matter of trigger control. I have done that before and able to repeatedly send single round to target, accurately, again and again. The disadvantages of Ultimax 100 is its overall weapon length being too long for urban fighting, magazine catch design is not good as the mag can fall off during firing or a bump, weapon body is not rugged as the weapon can malfunction if drop hard. I am wondering why the Ultimax 100 was not a learning point for our local arms manufacturer to design a better LMG for our SAF. How is the 600m grouping for this Colt LMG? I believe it cannot match the Ultimax 100, not even close. Cheers.
You are probably 1 of the rarer guys in the saf who knows what you are doing with the ultimax. most ppl who are supposed to handle this gun always end up with a IA to deal with during live firing especially with movements in section firing. If you have a good operator, you probably get a better grouping, but most sections will just end up unable to fire this gun when its really the time to fire. So in a sense if this new replacement may lose out in several areas but it is able to fire reasonably accurately without much IA with any regular joe, its a major upgrade dont you think.
@@leethomaskc3327 the colt IAR has a barrel length of 16 inches, and the ultimax newest version (MK9) 18 inches, the grouping shouldn't be that large of a difference if we are talking about sheer single shot ability. However if we talking about sustained fire it is possible the ultimax will out perform the colt IAR with sustained fire. Also I'd like to say the issues you mentioned has been mostly fixed with the MK5-9 of the ultimax but I believe local production of such a weapon would be more expensive than colt. Colt is a well established manufacturer and already have factories that pump out this parts, mass production for these weapons would require minimum retooling and production facilities. This might have been just a cost saving measure and like my comments I said before the COLT IAR won the IAR performance competition which the ultimax took part in too which lost to the IAR
ST did improve on the original Ultimax. Some of these designs were exported and others did not find customers but none were fielded by the SAF. What cannot be improved is that the bolt carrier group is relatively large and heavy, and that the weapon fires from an open bolt. All that moving mass means the weapon will not be as accurate as the IAR, it isn't just a question of sights.
Also weight is not a problem with small arms.
Many people complain about SAR21 (which has its faults)
But what really is important is Center of Gravity
And in that the bullpub has it right over the pistol grip
Saw an NCO testing the Enfield once presumably this was when they started to consider bullpub
The Senior NCO was impress by the center of gravity allowing easy maneuver of weapon, compact size is perfect for jungle n FIBUA
Weight becomes less of an issue, if it is the soldier weak, should go pump some iron FFS...
Of course Ultimax is more cumbersome bc of the length n the mk2 liked to get snagged in passing vines bc of the potruberances but later models could be refined, again a shorter barrel commando option + telescopic butt would further compact the weapon make it more manageable through undergrowth
I don't think the SAF are practically thinking thru weapon selection here enough. Very odd decision
When you are in a firefight or ambush, nothing beats A LOT of ammo avail.
SAF will do well to remember the primary operating environment is jungle (secondary) or Urban. There is less need for range, more for fast sustained fire suppression.
This looks like it's just some kind of m4 which is a carbine not a machine gun.

Remember, ST also recently showed off the belt fed version of the Ultimax. Which I can see as being potentially quite successful
Very nice.
Some sinkies resort to superficial argument like "Don't treat this war as NORMAL". Hello, what is considered "NORMAL"? On the military perspective, the F35 is arguably the best combat aircraft in the world.......but it costs several hundreds of thousands in operating cost per hour........US military itself asks if the F15X would be a better choice for USAF military needs.. I've given many egs of the FAILURE by the govt with its team of "ELITES" having FAILED sinkies even as such FAILURES like the epic mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic & the losses of tens if not hundreds of BILLIONS from our reserves because of incompetence, deceit, arrogance etc of those managing........whereas apologists and acolytes FAILED to give even ONE single eg of their capabilities & addressed my criticisms. Both the Isreal-Hamas war & the Russia-Ukraine wars show that the personal arms like the new LMG play much diff. in the outcome.......compared to the use of drones, artillery strikes, etc............Russia is using WWII era tanks like the T54/55 and Ukraine was reported to use an old machine gun ..........Make informed decisions based on the FACTS & REALITIES............NOT the propaganda in the ST & acolytes.
someone get my man a bigger helmet
The US marines bought the HK IAR as a standard issue for all riflemen, but we only used the IAR to replace the SAW, how does this replace the SAW in suppression fire that the SAR21 cant in full auto? There are vids that this colt IAR empties its mag of 30 in 3 seconds, and it takes another 3 to reload, which kind of defeats the purpose of fire suppression vs the SAW doesnt it?
Sedap.
Nothing here to boast about or proud of.Basically this machine is not made in Singapore.Unlike Ultimax 100..made from scratch till the newest version Mark9.
Surprisingly majority people said the people are the opposition themselves.
Big mistake. Singapore brass have recent habit of following US blindly
Now instead of weapon autonomu Goh Kheng Swee n LKY fought for, they have bought into Unreliable US dependency which can end in coercion.
There's nothing wrong with Ultimax except it's old and the version most NS use is mk 2 abused to death.
When it comes to firepower n suppression, Ultimax provides low rate sustain fire.
The 30 round mag will empty out real fast with this new Colt weapon. Nor will most scenario require such long Range, for that you have the marksman (Knights armament I believe)
With its low cycle rate, Ultimax is perfect for sustain cover.
Shot the ultimax before. It's crap with blanks partially bc Spore army is stingy and local made blanks suck
But got to suppress fire with the drum live rounds. The average Singapore soldier takes so long to cover ground had to empty the entire drum and some to keep suppression fire constant.
This was a night shoot, I could see the tracers land....super accurate. And I'm not a great shooter (plus iron sights, imagine a scope on a later model mk5 or mk 8)
Anyway, at some point was surprised to see something glowing in the distance near the targets thru my sights, thought I set them on fire, when I looked up, it was the barrel red hot....
Panicked, was shitting bricks I would sign the dreaded 1206 since the barrel was drooping...
Lucky for the Ultimax an added feature is you can change out the barrel quickly the cool one down
When it comes to zombie apocalypse, there is no substitute for Ultimax for all its flaws...
Colt sounds great with bells n whistles but if you're in the mud fighting close quarters, you want the accurate SUSTAIN FIRE.
A short barrel option also exist for Ultimax which will help in urban FIBUA and later models got rid of the cheapo mk 2 plastic stock.
I don't think SAF thought this through.
Same with the stupid helmets
Those are great for low intensity stuff but in the sort of high intensity fights in Ukraine for example, your asking for shrapnel.
SAF sends too many to US to train, they get all sorts of stupid ideas.
They don't seem to think independently and assume US is the best
Singapore should make its own arms not rely on uncle Sam who will use it as leverage to twist countries to bend to its dictate
Case in point fighters. Spore far too reliant on US made. US can just deny the source codes. This means Spore's independent foreign policy is at risk
On a small arms level, there is no reason ST cannot meet requirements for SAF.
This is not a big ticket item urgent replacement.

I'm NOT a pro in military tech or tactics so pls excuse me if I'm ignorant. However the Russia-Ukrainian war has shown that DRONES are the principal weapon. Just wondering how the use of drone impacts on the selection of personal arms like the LMG.
Don't take that war as normal, the only reason it ended up that way is because both sides ended up locked in a stalemate where they can send those little bombers to harass the enemy. In a lot of other situations drones are a lot less effective.
@@danielc2701 Considering that Russia has almost unlimited military resources & after suffering huge losses, Ukraine, which is a small fraction of the size of Russia has done rather well using drones since Russia began its special ops on 24/2/22 vowing to take over Kiev within a few weeks..........I doubt many sinkies understand what the root causes of SGP's problems. Take the eg of the Trace-Together tokens in which I estimate the govt has spent over $100 million - all for nothing........not to talk about wasting billions on the vax which has not only failed to prevent the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in its different mutations, but actually has been HARMFUL.......can tok all day about govt's incompetence & arrogance, but the share px of BioNTech is only about 1/5 its high. Sinkies can reflect on this, the White Paper of which I had completely DEBUNKED..........the simple msg is: Do NOT trust the govt (& the so-called oppos)
It does not, infantry is always disposable and they don't have many ways of protecting against drones personally.
So their guns won't really change, with maybe more units using UBGL birdshot etc.
Protection of infantry against drones is just called armor support, where vehicles get the brunt of the enemy drone attacks, so there's no change needed for regular infantry.
@@keatonwastaken Or overhead cover. It was already long in use before drones vs mortar fire. This Ukraine-Russia war is rather unique but it gives people the impression that it is "standard" and messing up people's perception of the effectiveness of some weapons.
Replaced one of the best light machine guns in the world for this. Disappointed.
That's still considered as Assault Rifle not LMG
It is an LMG, with a heavier barrel, different gas system and heat dissipating hand guard, it isn't a assault rifle any more, it's build to be heavier than one with the ability to have more sustained fire than a assault rifle without barrel deformation and overheating. Roughly classifying as a LMG, if you think about it what makes the ultimax an LMG and not a rifle, is about the same.
Look up the HK MG36 or COLT LMG, similar designs that have been classified to be lmgs by many military world wide. Or even the RPK, an AK style lmg. Doesn't mean the gun is based on the AR platform means it cannot be a LMG.
@@RatSayingWoosh Well duh 🙄. I never said anything about what kind of platform or any type system they use for LMG. I don't care that is AR-15 platform or what.
The main problem is there is no further information about that gun, about the performance, about what type round they use, about what compatibility that can use.
From the video they just shared the performance and the mechanism. I can say, "It's still 'considered' as AR not LMG" because many LMG out there can outperform than that LMG. Even LMG from WW2 & Cold War era can outperform than that gun (MG 42, RPD, M 249, FN Minimi) You named it.
That's why I said It's still 'considered' Assault Rifle.
@@rafaeladven3012 before I go any further the MG42 is a GPMG not an LMG, an LMG is a single user operated machine gun and the MG42 or even the modernized MG3 is not a LMG, the Bundeswehr LMG is a belt fed machine gun firing 5.56mm. Also what makes you think the M249, and FN minimi are better? The FN minimi and M249 both play different roles as machine guns, they are built solely to provide suppressive fire whereas the IAR was build to be precise in it's automatic fire. The accuracy and precision of the IAR far beats the accuracy of the m249 and minimi let alone the rpd. It's all about fighting doctrine and not which gun holds more rounds. Singapore's doctrine mainly focusing on accurate fire rather than fire more rounds to hit. It makes more sense to employ a LMG with 30 rounds. It's more like a BAR machine gun than an mg42. Plus most Ultimax gunners were using 30 round mags anyways. If we wanted 100round drum mags for the AR platform are there and would make it no different from a m249.
Also MG36 if you like German LMGs
@@RatSayingWoosh FYI: MG 42 is classified as LMG by German Bundeswehr. Have you read SALW before?? Who is wrote that book??
When you said LMG can be different because of military doctrines from one to another, well you completely wrong. LMG have special purpose to suppress fire intended to pin down the enemies and of course you need higher fire rate to do that.
Yeah, maybe IAR better at accuracy but still you cannot make it as LMG. Because LMG need higher fire rate (which M 249 & FN MINIMI do) and I don't think IAR can do such a thing.
O yeah and one thing, why you need a LMG with 30 rounds for suppressing enemies and have 600m accuracy, if you can do such a thing with AR type weapons. I mean AR can do the same job you know. For me, that was ignorant decision.
