  • How often do you clean your reusable water bottle? It's great to cut back on plastic waste by using a reusable water bottle and straw. However, germaphobes (and others) will be shocked how much bacteria is in them! I'll show you how to clean them and disinfect them so you get the health benefits without the germs!

I use metal reusable straws because I feel it's easier to clean those than plastic ones. Silicone straws are just too soft and have too large of diameter for my liking, though they're not terrible.

I didn’t think to use the retainer cleaning tablets, that’s a great tip :)

I have 6, but I don't like the ones with straws. I prefer an opening to drink from and I wash them after every use.

You sound like a minimalist ha ha. Way to go washing them every time. Even my husband doesn't and he's more of a clean freak than I am.

Have you considered using an ultrasonic cleaner with the denture tabs to clean the straws and smaller parts (and cups if the cleaner is big enough) ?

I was also wondering why you did not clean the silicone/rubber ring inside the lid??

Great point! I didn’t talk about that but it should be part of cleaning a water bottle.

What can be used if you don't have a straw brush or a long Q-tip?

Use vinegar, pour in straw and rinse.

2 more tips: Please Remember! Also remove those rubber gaskets periodically since bacteria loves to hide there. If only drinking water I don't pull them out every wash instead opting for every 2-3, but if you are drinking anything else you shouldn't skip more than one wash to pull them out. I am very picky about the containers I use because of this since some have super hard to remove gaskets (or worse, sliding pieces that don't come apart so you can never completely wash them - I wish companies would stop making those).
Second: for the plastic portions if you have thoroughly cleaned them and they still have residual scents from previous drinks or even a slight funk from going way too long between washes (we have of course never done that... lol) you can soak them in vinegar for a half hour or so then rinse them off and let them dry. Once fully dry they will not have any vinegar smell. Technically you shouldn't have to rinse it off to remove the smell but I have noticed it sometimes lingers if I don't so I prefer to.

Bleach is essential for continued life on earth. I would internally combust mentally and physically without it.

Be careful with the bleach as there is a direct link to breast cancer. Maybe look for alternatives you can use?
