Hi Katherine. Thanks for putting up this video, this is so informative and helpful. As a fellow gp trainee in Ireland I feel like I am watching myself through this video. I like the fact that you briefly addressed the common stereotypes about GPs. Most people think that GPs don't do anything just sending patients to A&E which is absolutely wrong. We are very busy dealing with issues that never make to the hospital. I am currently doing my first Gp rotation and I must say I struggled the first few weeks I started cos some of the cases I had I wasn't used to dealing with them in the hospital and so I wasn't sure how to manage them. Thankfully I had a good trainer who supported me all through and like you i find myself always studying, listening to podcasts or webinar even when I should be resting 😊 . Gp is very busy but so rewarding and I am so happy that I chose it.

I really do envy you. I wish I had the requisite IQ to understand all the maths, biology and so forth required to even stand a chance of getting into medical school. Not to mention the huge responsibilities you have to shoulder in your line of work. In other words, I salute you!

Hello, i really want to become a doctor more specifically a GP, but having read articles form both the BMA and other news sources i keep hearing the same thing - that beards hinder the effectiveness of surgical masks and they must be shaved off. I keep my beard for religious reasons and i guess i was wondering if Doctors more specifically GPs can keep beards, my beard is about a hands length so yeah not those stubble beards but the more lengthy ones. Thank you for reading :) And also what about rotations in medical school so like how do different specialties treat beards like are surgeons expected to be clean shaven more than GPs. Thanks again
All GP training schemes include a portion of hospital based training, which often includes A&E. Once qualified many GPs also work in A&E or urgent care!
@@xpingars I thought in the UK A/E is reserved for emergency medicine consultants, is this not the case? In spain (im a british jr dr here) we dont have an equivalent specialty to emergency medicine so a/e doctors here are either internists or gp, i want to move back there when i finish here and i would absolutely love to be able to combine both, and have the option to avoid hospital medicine entirely if i choose. Is this realistic as a GP in the UK? thanks so much
As a GP you can work as a GP in urgent care or negotiate a job with a A&E to work as a specialty A&E doctor - typically in minors which is bread and butter GP work. You can’t be an A&E consultant, for this you go through ACCS/A&E training. GP training now only has one year of hospital and two years in GP. Once you’re fully qualified as a GP you can do whatever you wish really! Most GPs do all their clinical work in GP surgery but you I’ve met GPs working in A&E, palliative care, community geriatrics, psychiatry, geriatrics as a GP or GP with special interest... I just started my 2 year internship in my country and after seeing how is the life of the residents i started thinking about getting extra time for me, family and friends, also i like to speak to the person and not just see him as an issue to fix.
Hi! GP training consists of a mix of hospital and GP placements. During the hospital placements you will be on the on call rota (long days, nights, weekends) so the work life balance is not as good as during GP (regular hours, weekends free). To be honest most of the learning is from seeing patients, debriefing with supervisors, reflecting and reading during the job. I don't spend a lot of my free time studying, though exams are coming up and that will change soon. The great thing about GP is once you've finished training, you have essentially complete flexibility as to how your working life looks like - many options to be a salaried, locum, partner, portfolio GP etc. That is not to say that it's easy - the current GP climate is tricky at the moment with high demand and low resources, so the days are tough. Hi Katherine as a gp trainee do you get to see patients face to face , I thinking of becoming a gp I don’t won’t to be in a call centre all day. Also with the econsult are you typing in response to the patient queries?. Also what proportion of your consultations are face to face and online
I felt the best preparation was my F2 GP placement. Lots of MSRA questions was GP orientated and common scenarios encountered in primary care. I also finished a couple of question banks (MCQBank and Passmedicine). I'm generally not great with SJT questions so I studied hard for the clinical part and it paid off! Apart from this, lots of luck and a good night sleep the day before.

Hi Sohan, no it's not through MRCP, that's if you wish to be a physician. For GP training application you need to sit the MSRA exam +/- interview afterwards. I'm not sure about the ins and outs of applying as an IMG - I'm sure there's lots of information on a quick search or RUclips. Can a China trained doctor took PLAB and OET then register for work in NHS? Heard UK lack doctor so they open a double sized PLAB clinical exam center in Manchester. Not sure they wellcome doctor from 3rd world. Thanks. And I assume you graduate from UK's med school?
Once you finish your training and are fully qualified as a GP, this is very much possible. There are options to work as a locum GP or you could negotiate a part time salaried post. Portfolio GP is another option. There are lots of opportunities to do teaching, management, research, medical journalism, anything you want really! During GP training there are LTFT (less than full time) posts (e.g. if you choose to do 50% LTFT, your training will take 50% longer). P.S. Did this thought come from Ali Abdaal's recent video? :P
