Jupiter sounds (so strange!) NASA-Voyager recording

  • From an original CD: JUPITER NASA-VOYAGER SPACE SOUNDS (1990) BRAIN/MIND Research
    Fascinating recording of Jupiter sounds (electromagnetic "voices") by NASA-Voyager. The complex interactions of charged electromagnetic particles from the solar wind , planetary magnetosphere etc. create vibration "soundscapes". It sounds very interesting, even scary.
    Jupiter is mostly composed of hydrogen and helium. The entire planet is made of gas, with no solid surface under the atmosphere. The pressures and temperatures deep in Jupiter are so high that gases form a gradual transition into liquids which are gradually compressed into a metallic "plasma" in which the molecules have been stripped of their outer electrons. The winds of Jupiter are a thousand metres per second relative to the rotating interior. Jupiter's magnetic field is four thousand times stronger than Earth's, and is tipped by 11° degrees of axis spin. This causes the magnetic field to wobble, which has a profound effect on trapped electronically charged particles. This plasma of charged particles is accelerated beyond the magnetosphere of Jupiter to speeds of tens of thousands of kilometres per second. It is these magnetic particle vibrations which generate some of the sound you hear on this recording.

      Its also the oldest and largest planet in our solar system, it formed about 1 million years after the solar system, earth was about 100 million years after. Its gone the longest with no significant change, it outweighs every other planet combined then doubled. And protects us from comets and asteroids. It really couldn't get any closer to being the protecting father of the other planets. Considering its age, if Venus and Mars ever had life on them, it probably protected them too, just like it protects us today
      Edit
      On top of all that. Its so large and massive it doesn't orbit the Sun, rather they orbit each other.

      Ovid J. I. Tuven It's proven that many sounds (or the sounds created from the electro-magnetic wavelengths emitted by the planet) from the planets are in a certain pitch that releases a relaxing chemical from the brain, kind of like listening to calming waves or breezes. So Jupiter isn't really trying to scare people... but help them go to sleep! xD

    Think about this. Space is really an abyss of just darkness. I imagine myself just flying away from Earth. Imagine this sound, just being in space. You keep kicking, propelling yourself further into the abyss, farther from Earth. You pass Mars, and keep going. You pass the asteroid belt, and keep going. Then you see this giant mass of just gas, in a perfect sphere, floating. All you hear are these sounds. And anything beyond this point of where you're at, is another gas ball with rings, followed by two more. Then a small rocky dwarf planet, and then what? Kupier belt? What's after that? What's outside of our galaxy? It's so ominous to not really know. Yet here we are, confined to this small planet as we are literally pixels in our solar system. It's kind of... scary, don't you think? And to throw it in, maybe we are alone. Maybe we are put on this Earth by whatever, to discover what really is out there.

      Adam Loves Andrea Great comment, but you're assuming that all of the planets would be aligned along your trajectory. The reality is that most if not all of them would be at points in their orbits many millions of miles away from you. In fact, if you were to hypothetically set out right now, in the direction of Jupiter, at a velocity approaching that of the speed of light, Jupes would be the only major planet you would encounter until you (eventually) got way beyond the Oort Cloud and reached another planetary system outside our own, somewhere in the direction of Cancer. It's quite a cool image though. You might want to check out this to-scale map of the solar system, with all of the planets in order as you outlined. I think, given your comment, that you'll like it ;)

    This sound feels calming and benevolent, like Jupiter is the older brother looking out for us, guarding the inner solar system and sweeping it of asteroids whilst it oversees the expanse of the tempestuous and tumultuous outer solar system and it's drama.
    Jupiter is a benevolant sovereign who looks after it's little siblings in a way. I feel safe listening to this.

      There are circumstances that make life on this planet possible. Just removing one of those factors would be catastrophic. Remove the moon or the sun and life would seize to exist. There are also earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanos, blizzards, droughts, tsunamis, etc. that destroy life. Most of our planet is uninhabitable. Why are we here? Because it was a miracle BUT that can easily be changed.
      Let me reverse your question, if the universe is habitable, why isn't there MORE life throughout it? Why are most planets uninhabitable for humans?

    For some reason I love this more than I should but if you ask me I can describe the sounds in my own way
    Imagine you are downstairs in your house or when you get a house with 2 floors someone takes a bath yes a bath and you can hear all the water running through the pipes, with the air conditioner on and doing it’s thing in the middle of a hurricane with intense winds, and your tv is static, with some thunder. That’s what Jupiter sounds like to me personally

      Abhishek Sanyal Probably NASA's licensing fees were to high. I mean, they did send stuff into space to capture that sound. It's probably more expensive than hiring a composer. Or maybe NASA are just pricks that don't want to share

    These "sounds of Jupiter" are incredibly edited. I've heard the actual sounds (unedited with minor adjustments to prevent fluctuation) and it doesn't sound ANYTHING like this. www-pw.physics.uiowa.edu/voyager/v2pws_jupiter_arrival.html there's your original Jupiter sounds from Voyager 2.

They're destructive and beautiful showing birth _AND_ death. Black Holes are a enigma that eat everything including light. They're fascinating. Astroids are cool too. We got several of them around our atmosphere as we speak. Just chillin' (they're considered our other moons.) Sun waves and solar storms are painful sure but they don't upset me. I don't really got an opinion the void. But I think it's interesting how there _is_ matter there just not the kind we perceive.

      Yeah, it makes me wonder what was actually going through their minds when they put the sound effects into those old movies.
      I also question what methods they used here to extract that sound from radio waves, and what they used to record the radio waves (ie, if it was highly focused and directional, or covered a wide area, or omnidirectional) as normally all I get out of radio receivers is white noise, so not sure what they used to get something this interesting.

      This is actually recorded, it's the frequency of the interaction of charged particles and the magnetic field outside of the planet. This vibration can be detected by the instruments put on the Voyager 1, and so NASA decided to translate the data into sound (probably removing infra and ultra tones) and here's the result.

  • @Matrilwood
    @Matrilwood 10 лет назад +56

    This is less the sound of Jupiter and more what you would hear if you went over there and flicked on your radio (Or a radio specifically designed to listen to planets, anyway). The actual sound of Jupiter would be a lot less peaceful. More like being in the middle of a hurricane. A really high pitched hurricane because the "Atmosphere" is primarily made up of hydrogen and helium.
    It would be impossible to record it with current technology, unfortunately. Apart from the fact that the recording would be way too loud, there is no way for a microphone to survive (Bare in mind, you can break professional microphones by blowing into them which is why professional sound engineers get aggro when people do that). The probe that was launched into Jupiter to survey the atmosphere only lasted just over an hour before being destroyed, so I'm not sure how a thin piece of metal tape being exposed to the elements would cope for even a second.

    • @NightRunner417
      @NightRunner417 9 лет назад

      Recording the audio would be the easy part. If you manage to get a probe to survive inside the Jovian atmosphere for a whole HOUR, then all you really have to do to pull off a basic sound recording is bury a digital recorder deep inside the probe with the microphone element potted in a tough resin coupled mechanically to the chassis of the probe. Then you have the data recorded to a reasonably durable medium. Presto, successful recording. Getting it back home in order to listen to it, though... Screw it. Just have the audio transmitted back to another probe in orbit, or try to receive it from Earth. There's no real point anyway, logically. Anyone who's ever done homemade video on a really windy day already knows what it would sound like, lol.

    • @FLAME4564
      @FLAME4564 9 лет назад

      I partialy agree but that dosent mean that Jupiter itself aint capable of proving that sound in space is possible. I mean as Voyager 2 found out when it came pass the Gas Giant itself. It detected sounds that almost resembled this which were like an odd crackling noise. In my view sounds like are most likely buffeting noises between the Magnetic field and the suns Solar Wind.

      If you look at Saturn with a telescope it might make you think twice about planets like Jupiter. Also, In 7 billion years the sun is supposed to grow into a red giant consuming us. But in 5 billion, we will have the most sight of the Andromeda Galaxy, as it is on a collision point with the Milky Way, "don't worry we'll be spared though" sadly I'm gonna get to miss that amazing sight though

      Knowing how large it is compared to earth and there is probably miles of gas and storms then miles of liquid gas under that and we will probably never know what's down at the center is very chilling.

    It's only the radio emissions being generated by the planets own electromagnetic field, basically if you could listen to it on a ham radio at the right frequency, that is what you would hear. Nothing big to be thought about, it also has a little bit to to with the deflection if the solar wind by the same field.

    Note that NASA had nothing to do with these recordings beyond making the data publicly available. If any of the original natural plasma wave signals remain in this recording, they are unrecognizable. However, all of the Voyager PWS waveform data are available online. (I'd give you a link, but I'd only be rewarded with a ghost ban.)
    Of course there are no audible frequency pressure waves in space, what we normally think of as sound. But since the particles in space are mostly charged, they can interact at a distance via electric and magnetic fields and can propagate audible frequency waves without the need to collide. These plasma waves are still far too faint to hear with a human ear in space, but the associated oscillating EM fields are easy to detect with antennas, so this is what we do. The resulting signals can be played back without any modification as sound. Unfortunately, the natural signals are not generally soothing enough to be marketed as meditation music, so artistic interpretations like this video pop up all over youtube.
    Again, this sounds nothing like the natural signals we recorded with the Voyager plasma wave instruments. Please vote up, plus one, or comment in order to keep this information afloat. Thanks!
