If you have a Honda engine pressure washer regular maintenance is key to it running smoothly. The pressure washer in this video is a Homelite pressure washer powered by a Honda GCV 160 engine. You may find that your Honda gcv 160 stops running.
If your pressure washer quits running suddenly it could be a symptom caused by a plugged fuel cap vent. Sometimes when your pressure washer won't stay running its caused by old fuel. The engine can stall due to a lack of fuel flowing to the carburetor. If your Honda engine won't stay running check watch this video for instructions on fixing the problem.

Most come to these videos when they are in the middle of an issue, fucking get to the point. Don't make a 5 min video when a 90 second one will do.
Thanks for the kind words.
Or I guess you could already know this stuff but free is a lot to pay for information when you to stupid to know better.
I am 44 back in my days you had to be smart or have friends you could call. Thank God for RUclips for you huh?? Haha cause you have neither two of those things I mentioned guess common sense ain't that common anymore. Great video he made I believe and Iam a level A mechanic
Change your tampon and then change the playback speed
Wasn't even 5 min lol. Got to the point really quick as well.
I cannot tell you how grateful I am for this video! We've had multiple people look at it, work on it and could not figure out the problem, and this worked!! Now I bring a paper clip with me every time I start it. I clean out the holes and it works! God bless you, sir! 🙏❤️ Subscribed.
@@moonpleiades99 thats awesome. Thank you so much.
Worked like a charm. Now, I'm sitting under a shade tree enjoying a cool beverage as my daughter pressure washes the driveway.
Now that is success. Thanks for commenting
Yep. This totally worked. You can also pull out that center rubber diaphragm and then you can spray carb cleaner through all the holes and you’ll see where it vents to the inside of the cap. Cleaned them all out and reinserted the center diaphragm and it runs top notch again! Thanks for making this video!
Thank you as well.
I can’t believe it but you saved my hyde on the job today I was so frustrated and prayed to God for help, I trusted In Jesus even over this small problem, my wife finds your video and forwarded it to me and it worked. God answered 🙌 I have a new washer and don’t see vent holes I just left cap Off completely although it seems to run harder that way but it didn’t shut off any longer. This is a brand new pressure washer so I’m confused but the gas cap does go on very tight. Thank you 😊
Cheers!
I'm glad I could help.

I AM SO THANKFUL YOU MADE THIS VIDEO!!! I have a Ryobi pressure washer with a Honda motor. I was in the middle of pressure washing my driveway things were going great. Ran out of gas..refilled...started up again died. Tried several times to restart. Same thing fire shut off over and over. Got on RUclips found your video. Took off the cap cleaned out the holes. Put the cap back on and it started like a champ! You sir are Awesome! Thank you so much!
Thank you and you are welcome. I have to say comments like yours are what make posting videos worth it. I really appreciate it. Thanks again.
Man I never even thought of this! I've done everything else to the pressure washer, but I never thought the cap would cause an issue. I loosened it as a test, and the thing has run perfectly ever since. Thank you so much for this video, you saved me so much frustration!
You are very welcome. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Thank you! I think what I did was fill the tank with too much gas. This fix worked! I said to myself after I watched your video, “ It can’t be THAT simple, can it?” YUP!!!!!
You are welcome. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you! Clogged gas cap vent was what my issue turned out to be. Loaded with carbon build up. Machine would turn over n conk right out. I'm handy but not mechanical. Your video was trouble shooting gold, and once I got the cap thoroughly cleaned out, it stayed running strong. Thanks again.
Thank you so much. I'm really glad my video helped you out.
Great video. Easy fix. You saved me a lot of time and money with my pressure washer.
I'm glad to hear that. Thanks for watching.
Your video is still going strong and helping people. Fired right up for me and kept running. Thanks!
Thank you very much.
Thank you soooo much. I have the same pressure washer and was having the same problem. Check the cap and bam , plugged holes. Easiest fix ever. I appreciate you!
Thank You. I appreciate it.
Wow, I never would have thought of something like that. I would have taken it in and paid a hundred dollars to find that out. Great video!
Thank you.
I know this is a old thread, but thank you sir. It worked like a charm.
You are welcome. Thanks for commenting.
Omg - watched 1 video and boom problem solved - you’re a legend
Thank you. I appreciate it.
I’m trying this when I get home. I work on a lot of small gas equipment. I replaced the ignition coil, water pump and carburetor over the years. This machine has severed me well, I just couldn’t figure out why it would run for a few minutes and die, then wouldn’t start back up..
Thanks for the tip!
I hope it works for you. Good luck.
THANK YOU. It worked !!! on my Briggs engine (temporarily i just LOOSENED the cap to try it .. but it soon rattled itself off.. but then bought a new cap)
Bruh thank you man used a old tooth brush with a small dab of water and it cleaned it like new and pressure washer started right up and stayed on until I was finished again I appreciate it man👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
No problem. I appriciate your comment.
I have the Honda GC160 engine on my pressure washer and it's doing the same thing. I thought you had given me the fix but I just checked, and my gas cap doesn't have those vent holes at all! I guess I will try the spark plug next as one guy mentioned.
Thank You so much. Brilliant Video and instantly resolved the problem. You saved me so much time.Really Appreciated.
You are very welcome
Warning! I have a PW with a Honda GCV 160 that lost compression with less than 190 hrs. of use. Repair will cost $250-$300 and it cost me $45 to find that out. Honda = reliable?
Thanks boss. Mine cutting out and I just checked this. The holes are filthy. Its night here so will see how it goes in the morning.
Right on. I hope it fixes your problem. Good luck to you.
You just saved my a** on a job thank you‼️
Mine keeps breaking the exhaust valve rocker arm. Glad you had an easy fix!
Sorry to hear that.
Have you gapped it properly? .008 exhaust and .006 for intake on this Honda engine. May be different for you if you have another engine. With mine, it was the exhaust tappet screw that was stripped and the gap wouldn’t stay. 2 bucks new screw and gasket sealer and I’m back in business.
@@juaneato yes the valve clearance is set right. The exhaust valve is tight in the the valve guide and it hangs when the engine warms up, causing the pressure on the rocker arm. On this motor you have to split the case to change the valves/guide so I am probably
done with it at this point.
eric pigg Time to go electric. I sold my riding mower today and I’m going to Lowe’s tomorrow and get a Kobalt electric mower and string trimmer. Sayonara Craftsman mower and Echo gas trimmer!
Having same issue,I'm definatly gonna try this!!Thanks!!
I hope it fixes your issue. Good luck.
That’s awesome 👏 thanks for the easy fix. I was so frustrated on the job trying to keep the washer running just to get done. Lol an it was thee cap . I love Monday
You are welcome. It took us awhile to finally figure it out. Sometimes it's the little stuff that cause big problems and stops projects in their tracks. I'm glad it helped you.
@@DIYAllied I think I over filled my gas tank. The tank on mine has a separate breather inlet on the top of the tank which got flooded with sloshing gasoline. But once the gasoline drips out, shouldn't air be able to once again get to the tank??
@@hearthealthyhustlebyjonath7414 Yes I would think so.
@@DIYAllied it's working today without shutting itself off thanks for your reply
You are welcome. Thanks for commenting.
Don’t use a screw driver to clean it because it will destroy the sponge inside the vent holes which is there to block away dust and dirt from entering the gas tank and getting into the carburetor. I soaked the cap in gas for 5 minutes and sprayed the vent holes with water and the power washer runs perfect now. 👍🏼

Love your videos. They have helped me get my Honda from not running at all to running then no pressure from pump. Got it running with pressure. It idles a little rough any suggestions? Sat for 2 years and only used once or twice. 👍👍👍
Mike Emeimem Thank you. I appreciate the positive feedback. I'm glad they have helped you. Congrats on getting it going again. Rough idle could be an air issue or a fuel issue. Plugged fuel filter or air filter? It could be the jets on the carb are dirty. If it sat for a while with fuel in it, I would look into cleaning the carburetor.
Good detective work,on finding the problem/cause , thanks for sharing
Glad I could help.
Wow, it was my problem too! Thank ypu for posting

Ledgend, fixed mine, sure was blocked like you said.
Thank you
Awesome. Thank you for your kind words.
Will try. Have a honda 160cc lawn mower looks similar in make will at least give it a shot.

Great video thank you!
Thank you.
Every video I see on you tube with power washer issues it’s the same power washer 😂 I guess I know not to buy that one .
That was my problem. This fixed it. Thanks for the post.
You are welcome
My gas cap seems having some screen in these holes ? Should those be clear at all?
@@josepharias Those holes need to let air in. My cap had what I thought was a charcoal type material inside. I cleared the obvious obstruction and it fixed the problem for me.
So should I remove that ?
@@josepharias that's a judgment call. I can't say one way or the other.
hell ya brother,my instincts were correct! ran into the same shit with an older steel tanked and steel gas capped honda powered sod cutter 3 yrs ago!
Sometimes you get lucky! as they say, when you hear hoofbeats think horses not zebras, LOL thanks for the video!
You got that right!
Hi great tip. But hear is my problem took out pressurerwasher and used for four hours worked like a charm. Was aplying soap and just stoped and could not start. Cleaned carb, tank, lines, sparkplug is sparking ok, blowed out fuel filter, checked oil, even tryed quick start and wont start. I would realy like to know what else i can check to try to get started. Please thanks. Keep up the videos great job. Yes i have a honda 160 gcv ryobi 2800psi washer about 5 years used afew times per year work always like a carm. I have never done any mantince on it.
The only thing I can think of is possibly the on off switch got wet? That happened to me one time and it would not run until that switch dried off.
Thank you! Got my pressure washer going again
👍 no problem.
Thank you
You are welcome
Well, I removed the gas cap, cleaned it out with hot water and cleaned the foam filter. Blew out the holes and dried the cap.
It started up, but unfortunately stopped running after a minute.
I’m going to pull the muffler, check the condition of the piston and check the spark arrestor for blockage.
Any other thoughts?
Thx
I tried this fix as well and mine is still doing the same thing. I've already tried replacing the carb previously because it wasn't running right but now it won't stay running at all.. dies after about 30-45 seconds.. sprayed some carb cleaner through the vent holes on gas cap, nice and clean now, but same issue
Could be a clogged fuel filter
Hi, mine is doing the same, runs 20 to 40 seconds and shuts down. I have cleaned the gas cap, carburetor but still the same. I have used this only about 6 or seven times and it's been kept clean and in good shape. Did you ever find out what it was?
@@paulgill7222 here’s my take on this:
I replaced the ignition coil (this was a problem on another PW I had and it was the issue),
I replaced the carburetor and the plastic part where it connects to the motor, which had a crack in it.
So I replaced both.
This solved my issue and it is running good now.
The carburetor was not sealed and had an air leak when mounted. Check for a vacuum leak. Good luck.
@@pauled3307 ok I'll try going through all the things you have mentioned. Thanks very much
That was it! Gas cap. Wow. Thanks so much!

Just what was keeping mine from running now after i cleaned the holes stays running thanks
Thank you.
Hello Thank you very much, you save my day today,
Awesome. Thanks for commenting. I'm glad to have helped.
Great tip.Never would have thought of this in 1,000 years. My choke lever won't stay "clicked" back in the start position it just moves back in to the run position.Guess I can just hold it back while starting it, but any ideas on what's going on?
Thanks for the video!
I believe the new ones have an auto choke system. I'm not sure about those.
I have the same problem
Thanks for the information 👍
You are welcome.
Godsend brother. Thanks!
No problem. Thanks
Had similar issues with my pressure washer- tried the gas cap, then disconnected the oil sensor then replaced the carburetor ( $20. On line) same problem- very frustrating finely replaced the spark plug. That was the culprit, so start with the simple stuff.
Sometimes it’s the simplest thing.
Hello, I have the same motor on my log splitter. I can use some answers about yours: when you pull out the choke does it stay out until you push it back or does it automatically retreat once you let go? Last question: is the engine one with no throttle adjustment, thus fixed by the governor? Thanks for your response the answers will be a tremendous help to me.
The engine i have does not have the auto choke feature. You have to manually choke and un choke it. This engine also has no throttle adjustment. I hope this helps.
@@DIYAllied that’s exactly like my engine. Now I have another question. On the carburetor the black plastic linkage that the choke rod connects to: is it spring loaded or not. I think someone put the wrong carburetor on the used unit I bought and it has a spring. Therefore the choke will not stay out by itself. Am I thinking correctly? Thanks
Thanks for sharing , nice to know.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank You so much, That fix My.
You are welcome.
Oh my gosh, thank you!!! 😁👍🏽

my 1st thought is vacuum lock from non venting gas cap.....ill continue watching the video and see!
You were right on. Nice call.
Get out of here
Great tip!
Thanks
Warning! I have a PW with a Honda GCV160 engine that lost compression with less than 190 hrs. of use Repair costs $250-$300., Honda = reliable?
Mine turns off when I open the choke do it to run. If I close the choke it stays running. Any ideas?
If I was to guess I would say the carborator jet is plugged.
So could you test this by just leaving the cap off or loose?
Yes you could at your own risk of course.
yes.. that worked for me .. but the cap soon rattled itself right off .. which let some small drops of the gas splash out .. BE CAREFUL !
Interesting. I just bought a brand new one and have the same issue. Only ran 10 minutes before stopping and there’s gas in the tank. I’ll check the cap though.
Did you get your pressure washer problem resolved?
DIY Allied Unfortunately no. Ironically, my sister has the same issue with one she just bought - different manufacturer. Also, can’t get mine restarted after it stops. 🤔
Mine still ain’t working done clean the carb took the compressors out still fine an don clean the gas cap it like it run but as soon I turn the water on dies
Thanks, worked like a charm!!!
I'm really glad it helped. You're welcome.
Awesome.
steelcyclist Thank you. Did the video help you out?
Great tip; thank you! :-)
J.D. Lawtum You are welcome
Ill check tomorror the cap
Possible air flow problem. Air filter or something blocking the airflow?
What could be the issue. It starts up like a charm BUT when you set it into run just dies hard. I set it back into run and turns on again then place it back to run it just shut off. Any advice?
Do you mean it runs on choke just fine but when set the choke to run it dies? If so I would start by checking the air filter. Sounds like an air flow issue.
@@DIYAllied yes from choke to run thank you for clarifying. Filter is super clean I lightly use the pressure wash. I even remove the filter and does the same.
@@waltercastro2015 Its possible that you have a carb issue. It is also possible that the gas is old. If it is, try some fresh stuff. I had a chainsaw that sat for a while and i couldn't get it to run right. Dumped the old gas and added fresh and that was all it took. I'm guessing your spark plug is good if you don't use it often.
@@waltercastro2015 if new gas doesn't help you may want to check this video ruclips.net/video/T-g1kWyGnZQ/видео.html
Mine when i change from choke to run. Turn off. And its really dificult to turn again.
I already clean the fuel system . Put new gasoline. And take out the base of carburator. Cleaning the screw that is inside to avoid clog.
But still the same problem
Do you mean its difficult to pull the cord, like its locked up?
@@DIYAllied no i mean difficult because i have to pull de cord several times. the cord is ok. but pull over and over. and dont start.
Javier Martinez i have the same problem
Did you try to start it without it in choke.
@@jamesjackson4264 if i put the choke in the middle works.. other thing is that i had to change the spark plug.
My pressure washer will die when i turn the water on but if i pull the trigger then turn the water on it seams to run fine but gets hot quick
holy $%!t this was it lol.. thanks man!!!!
My ryobi turns off once I turn the water hose on. When no water is on it runs great. Any ideas?
That's a problem, of which I have not heard. It stalls out when you turn the water on?
Don Key yes. If i have no water going into it runs great
@brock dion Have you checked the pressure unloader? I have a video on checking it.
Don Key I will on Monday after watching your video.
