I can't believe I've watched hours of tutorials and read probably hundreds of Google support pages to find this info here in 10 minutes...thanks for explaining this so clearly and quickly!
DAMMNNNNN! Great Video!!! Google Tag Manager has been a pain to understand as a Google Ads Specialist. You've just made it so much easy as most of my clients rely on phone calls!
I have seen many tutorials on Google Analytics and Tag Manager and you cover by far the most potential problems for any step. Had I found you earlier I would have understood everything so much faster.
Great Video! I watched a ton of google videos and was lost with all of them. You explained everything so well and I can do things on my own now. Thank you so much!
Great video! I am going to try it when i get home. Question! Is there a way to track IP of the visitor thst clicks on the link? Need to find a way to attribute certain leads to the click to call action.
Hi, is there a mistake in the video? When you created the event parameter in google tag manager, you called it "link_url," but when you registered the custom dimension in GA4, you registered it as "link_text". The custom dimension should be "link_url" same as google tag manager, correct?
Thanks Julius! Your teaching is really fantastic. Even with many details and complexity, it is very clear to understand all this. As soon as I can, I want to buy you one or several coffees
Many thanks for the video. I have set up GA4 link click event tracking for phone calls and email within GTM. Now I need to connect these tags to my Google Ads account for PPC conversion tracking. Do you have a tutorial on this, or any layman advice you could leave in the comments section? George
Amazing! But when i tried to do the same for the email address click and was about to create the custom dimension I could not put in the link_url in the event parameter field. It just said I could not use it. Can I just use link_url once? and if that is true what should I enter in the event parameter field then?
Great job. Did Contact 7 and this from your tutorials. I am looking ay buying your course. I want to find out if I have a directory page with a different phone, email and name addresses, and I want a bar chart in GA-4 to group them by number of clicks. Is that possible?
So im not sure I understand. GA4 already has the ability to add this as a feature under the "events" tab. If we have the GA4 Configuration already set up do we still need to do this for phone calls and like lets say things like "thank you" pages as well?
Thanks for your help! I have one question: at the end of the video you said "do not forget to register that phone number parameter as a custom dimension", which parameter are you referring to? the link_url one? Because you had already mentioned that earlier in the video.
Awesome video, great walkthrough! Rookie question here (sorry): Do i have to manually create tags and triggers for each page on my website that has the phone number(s) that i wish to track? Or can i create an automatic fire for all pages that has the number(s)?
Hey Julius, great lesson as always. Just curious, isn't there a risk that Google thinks you are breaking their ToS by sending "personally" identifiable information by doing this? Or is it safe, when it's your own phone numbers and email adresses?
Very instructive, thank you. Julius, do you ever experience Debug View in GA4 just not working at all? Mine hasn't worked in days now and I keep going to my site logging events. And I followed your tutorial and everything worked. Even tested it in Preview mode in GTM and all good. Tags fired. So why would Debug view not work? This makes no sense to me. I even used Chrome Google Debugger extensions and still no data in Debug View. Also, I assume to see this Event in Reports, after you create the custom dimension you would just "Create Event" correct? I created mine and named it "phone_number_click" just like in the video. Thank You!
@@AnalyticsMania yep, some other people had same problem. Turns out all I had to do was log out of my Wordpress and Bam the stream in Debug view started working. Thanks bud. Much appreciated.
Thank you for this informative video. A question: we are getting about 1000 "clicks" on the phone number on our mobile website, but only about 200 actual calls. We think this is due to "Fat Finger" and accidental button presses. Is there a strategy for capturing ONLY phone calls that are meaningful customer calls?
Hi Julius I can't seem to see the event in events report under engagement nore debugview but I do see it in real time reports, i have created them twice without any success, would you be able to type up a blog post accompanying this tutorial?
When someone clicks on a phone number, I'm getting 2 events firing in GA4 now. One for phone_clicks event, and another for Outbound Clicks that GA4 has for it's Enhanced Measurements. Is there a way to make it so the Outbound Clicks don't fire when phone numbers are clicked?
Hello, Julius A question regarding this event. I am now tracking phone number clicks, but I only want to count as a conversion those clicks which were done through mobile not desktop? What would be the easiest way to separate desktop and mobile and track only mobile events? Thanks!
I would do that with GTM. I would use variable #4 from here www.analyticsmania.com/post/google-tag-manager-custom-variables/ and then fire the event mobile_phone_click based on that variable. Then I would mark that event as a conversion in GA4
Great video! Are you able to connect the event to UA Google Analytics, then create a goal with the phone click information that would then be able to be connected to Google Ads?
yes. The steps are exactly as you described. Send an event to Universal Analytics. Create an event based goal in UA view's settings. Link your UA property with Google Ads. Import that goal as a conversion in Google Ads.
Hey Julius, I have 5 different numbers which I have to track as an individual event. If I create a trigger with tel: then it fires all 5 phone number tags, How I can differentiate it??
Hey Julius, thanks for the video first of all! What if I don't have GA4 but only UA? I tried to set-up phone and email clicks + phone and email copy and I couldn't. Have you made any video about UA?? It's so important, thanks!
I have a lot of Universal Analytics related tutorials in my course for beginners www.analyticsmania.com/courses/google-tag-manager-course-for-beginners/ Those who enroll get two versions of the same course: one is constantly updated and with GA4 examples. The older one (from 2020) is with Universal Analytics examples (and also the older version of GTM preview mode). The older version is still useful for many users who haven't migrated to GA4
@@AnalyticsMania Hey Juliues, thanks for your answer. Is there any option to pay the 2 bundles course (beginner + intermediate) split monthly or is it just a one off payment?
The problem with tracking by link clicks is if a click happened on a desktop it very well could have never been an actual call. I am tracking perfectly but my Events are much higher than my actual calls.
Dear Julius, I have two phone numbers, one above the other on my website. I want to track how many people clicked on office phone, and how many on mobile phone number. They both are starting with "tel:" in the click url, but the number after is different. What should I use as a variable while creating the trigger, click url or click classes that my developer added as unique for each? I tried to find one of your videos where you explain differences between these click variables but I didn't find it.
Can we use the same parameter and trigger for tracking multiple phone nos. or is it advisable to use a different parameter and a separate trigger for different numbers?
Hello Julius. So, you created a tracking tag to track phone number clicks....So, where is your mobile????????? Do you really think that people will click a phone number on a desktop device?? Really?? Have you tested if it works on a mobile device? I had already created the tag, using different approaches (URL click, Element click, Text click...). They all worked on desktop. None on a mobile.....Your video is incomplete. Sad.
@@AnalyticsMania Actually I made it work using "Click - All elements" as trigger type and then "Click element matches CSS selector a[href*=" tel:"]" as condition. I will take back my dislike, because I read your articles and I know you're legit and know the subject, but I will leave my comment as it is, in case someone can't make it work with your way.

If you are sending personal phone numbers of individuals, that is breaking the terms. But if you track company phone numbers, then you should be fine.

Is there a way to track phone clicks without GTM?
Yes, gtag ruclips.net/video/ICgXOhvA97s/видео.html
if we want to send same data to Facebook, How?
Instead of GA Event should we write
fbq('track', 'Track_phone')
Is it so?
Use fb pixel template in GTM and make your life easier
FB pixel template in Google Tag Manager indeed
Hello , in debug mode i see blank :( , any help ?
