Thank you so much! I replaced my outdoor light fixtures for the 1st time. I was tired of waiting for my sons and did it myself! I feel so accomplished!
Thank you, RUclips Husband, for teaching me how to remove and update my outdoor light! You did a great job; therefore, so did I!
Thanks! I used this to replace some old outdoor lights this weekend. They look amazing and I didn't get electrocuted, which is a huge win.
Should always use a tic tester or multi meter to test the hot. Never trust the switch in case of a 3 way or the wiring is messed up.
Exactly. I had a scare once before. It was a 3way
But if the breaker is shut off there shouldn't be any electricity running to it, no?
@@lancer717
I had a scare once in a three-way, but my wife and I got tested and luckily everything was good, good advice! 😊
@@mariebee3146 The breaker can be faulty or the circuit could be fed from another circuit because of dodgy wiring.
Or best use a voltage indicator with a proving unit, that's the only way to prove the circuit is 100% DEAD.
How easy to understand! Thank you! And it's nice to see that there are porch lights that don't have difficult to reach, dainty bulbs.
Thank you so much. I am going to attempt this in our 25 plus years old house next week. I am very handy and changed outlets and switches inside the house myself but have not done driveway lights. Thanks for the great video !!
Wow thank you for the thorough breakdown. You made this extremely easy by identifying all the parts
Just a note, Black wire is Hot not positive. Also you should twist your wires as the other ones before to put the twist one connector so they all stay together inside the box
And then add a small piece of electrical tape around it
Thanks, this was well-explained and helpful. As a result, I was successful in changing out my old fixture to a new one.
Thank you so much. I'm scared of even a static shock but I believe I can do this with your instructions!
That was smoother than flowing water. Thank you. This is actually on my honey-do-list. Going outside to change the lamps now. However, im turning off ALL the breakers as my breakers are partially labeled. 👍👍👍
Thanks I appreciate you showing me how easy this was.
Always use a little handheld tester to make sure your power is off. It looks like a pen or a marker. You hold it to the wires and press a button and if the wires are still hot it will beep nice and loud.
It is only used to check if the circuit is energized but not to check if the circuit is dead. For 100% safe isolation, you have to use a voltage indicator with a proving unit to ensure the potential difference across hot, neutral and ground are 0V. This why you almost never see a professional electrician carry a handheld tester.
Clear and to the point. Thanks!
Thank you! Very helpful and feel confident changing out my fixture to update my home a bit!
Great video! Straight forward and very easy to follow….
….now, on with replacing the light fixture!!! 🤞🏻
So helpful just changed my deck fixture for the first time with this video
Thank you, exactly what I was looking for.
Great video, great instruction...........I cannot get the the screws off the old current fixture.
Thank you! You made this look easy!!!!
This was a very helpful video. Thanks for sharing!
Great video. Best descriptive video on this task I’ve found.
Thank you, this video was super easy to watch and follow along.
Thank u. Can u turn it off as well using the smart bulb
Very easy to follow! You explain things in a very easy to understand way!
Thanks, great video - was helpful when I replaced my three old outdoor lights.
Yo! That transition in the beginning was 🔥!!
Thank you. You made it very easy to understand and follow. 👍
Thank you this was very helpful . I installed both the fixtures with the help of my wife
That bulb🤯👍👍👍👍
Great video.
Thank you for the video! I will try that!
Super helpful!
Thank you!
Thank you, this was soooo helpful
Always use an electrical tester and confirm the wires are DEAD.
Good video but I would use a tester on the wires just double check that the wires are de-energized.
thank you sir changed mine easy breezy all learned from you .
Wow smooth transition in the beginning of the video from old fixture to new! Well done on your video editing skills man ;)
Thanks, man. I appreciate that.
thanks for making it easy and explain it
I have the exact white lamplight in your thumbnail, I would like to paint it black instead of changing it what kind of paint it right for that kind of material?
LIFESAVER! I have all my smart bulbs in my home....been needing to find out how to do this! GREAT VIDEO! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
super helpful. Thanks!
Great video!! Thanks for sharing!!
great video, however, I need an extra outlet to send a wire to my garage. Any ideas?
Great content, I’ve been looking for a comprehensive guide to change my outdoor light fixture - found it here! ➕➕
Thank you brother...
Thanks for the video i repaced it in no time and saved $$
What if your home doesn’t have a ground . What do you do with the ground the that the new fixture comes with
Thanks for the video man! 🎉
Love it Champ you are the Best thanks
Thank you sir 🙏🏾
Thank you for this video 😊 just bought my first house this year and I'm gonna change my porch light soon so this was really helpful 😁
Updates?

Besides what others have said about using a non contact voltage tester, you should have connected the ground to the bracket. It was wrong in the old set up and now it'll be wrong for years to come.
I lightly touch both. some houses though are resferse I thought white was always hot
Really nice job.
THANKS MAN your vid motivated my mother and I to switch out ours!!! STAY STRONG BROTHA MAN!!!
Nice! You guys got this!
I appreciate you brother! Got mine setup within 10 mins.
Do you ever caulk the light fixture? I’m curious because in a different video they did. Curious your thoughts.
You certainly can, and should, if it’s in an area that is exposed to the weather. I didn’t on this one because it’s on the porch and is well protected.
So i have new sconces with that same bracket as opposed to the cross bracket that has the 2 set screws in the middle to set your level. I used this bracket you have here and the entire sconce just wanted to swivel and sway in the wind. How do you keep it level??
thank you!!;
Scandinavian first name, mountains in the background. I know a Utahn when I see one. Great video!
So question... I have a red & black connected, & 2 whites connected on the current light. The new light has a black, white & green/yellow & tells me which is which as far as neutral, ground, live so is there some other way to hook up the wires? Should I just call an electrician?
I have a smart bulb can I use it in any fixture?
Thank you I am 71 and I can do this!
The Black wire is the hot wire NOT a positive.
Very true. My bad.
5:55 nice catch 👌
OK but what that initial light fade in transition was insanely smooth
What do you do if theres just a hole drilled through the brick and no box/ support?
I don't have a porch breaker, what do I do?
None of my exterior light fixtures currently have junction boxes, there’s just a wire sticking out of the side of the house underneath. Was that pretty common in the 70s?
How come you didn’t use the ground screw on the bracket too?
Yeah why not?
For whatever reason any dusk to dawn bulb in my outdoor fixture flickers. Normal bulbs do not flicker…. Not sure if it’s time for different bulbs or just replace an aging fixture
Question: if my old light is a motion detector type, could I use a smart bulb for dusk to dawn lighting?
I am yet to find a video with no dislikes 👎🏽. What was there not to like with this video ? Thanks for sharing
Are the wires different colors than white & black?
I’m learning and curious
Thanks
Should be white and black depending what country you from
My question is why are there 2 black wires and 2 white wires pre wired. Instead of just one black and one wire. Is the second pair of black/white wires in parallel connection to another fixture ?
Yeah mine is not going smoothly. It is with the screws that the caps screw onto. The screw is too long and caps do not rest against the light, so it leans out
My didn’t fix flush to the wall so ca I installed without the wall box
The only problem with mine is that yhe screws that go into the box are horzantal and the the screws that stick out don’t let me because it’s in the way
Cool shirt 👌
I tried replacing today but the holes in the old crossbar doesn’t fit the new lamp we bought. So unfortunately I have to replace the crossbar also (new one came with the lamp). I don’t know how to remove the old one. It looks like it riveted back to the wall.
That’s annoying. It definitely shouldn’t be riveted to the junction box but that doesn’t mean it isn’t. Hopefully you’re able to get it out of there!
I just installed new porch lights and followed this example. First light fixture worked fine. I covered the sensor amd the light came on now problem. The secomd light same thing but ince I turned the power back on amd covered the sensor the second light did not work and I tested the first installed lighr and now it was not working. I went to see did I trip the circuit. Went amd did a reset but no powet. No sure how the first light worked as tested but thw seco d did not. Now I'm fustrated.
Im just gonna turn off the main power, I bought my house few months ago but I still dont know it, Im not sure if the labels are correct
ok, that shirt is great.
This was very informative and looks easy to do. Thanks. Question...the light outside stays on all day, how do I fix that?
It shouldn't. That's unusual. Get an electrician to check it.
@@jab376 figured it out and fixed it myself.
@@elsiesmalls55 that's all that matters.
Is there a usual place in the circuit breaker where the outside lights are connected to? I look at my breaker panel and I can't figure it out. I turned off the ones that make sense to me like those near the kitchen since this is for a porch light by the kitchen back door. I tried turning off everything in the kitchen (cooktop, kitchen GFI, nook dining area, dishwasher, garbage disposal) but the porch light is still on. I don't want to needlessly turn off oven and A/C since they are in use. I even turned off jacuzzi and bathroom GFI, garage GFI -- still the light is on. I'll try some more later. Thanks.
I had to brute force even though I was alone in the house. It turned out to be the upstairs family room.
Are smart light bulbs durable enough?
Thank you so much! Thabks to your video I did it by myself! Homeowner single mom over here in Puerto Rico! 💪🏼
You call the black wire as positive. Is there positive in AC wiring?
yes there is.
No. It is “hot” the white is “neutral”
@@christophertaylor87 neutral as in ground? I’m curious because I plan on changing my porch light fixture.
What is the green wire identified as I opened mine up and my new light has a red but old one has a red and green
Green is pretty universally the ground or earth wire.
With the light outdoor light off, that should be good enough!!
You really NEED to check the wires are actually DEAD before going in and touching them even after popping the circuitbreaker. The number of electrocutions that occur because the wrong breaker was switched off or some wiring error that backfeeds Line (or Active or Phase) ... NEVER called POSITIVE (used to describe DC voltage) to the connection you are working on. This video kind of took a shortcut on safety! Another good practice is to put a temporary note tag on the breaker you have switched off so someone else doesn’t come by and reset it for whatever reason not knowing you’re working on mains electrics!
0:34 the video says the ensure the power is off. If you need a RUclips video to explain that to you, then you shouldn't be working with electricity in the first place. Hire someone.. LOL
@@TheBoardRoom_ still a good idea to measure or even use a chicken stick for any potential on the conductors you're going to handle even though you pulled the fuse, or popped the breaker at the fuse box and locked them out with a tag warning you are on the other end! Just good safe practice to get into really....
Yes sir I agree 👍
@@peteb2i thought i had my box labelled correctly but i got zapped because one outlet needed 2 circuit breakers to be shutoff for some reason.
@@knightrdrx Yikes!
Thanks, that looked so easy! Now I may be able to install my moms to save her money from hiring someone.
You got this!
So what do you do if the existing light fixture is dead? How can I identify which breaker to turn off?
Your box should be labeled on the switch as to what each one is for. If not, you’ll probably have to get an electrician in to fix it anyway.
Hold the wires. Have someone turn off each breaker. When you feel the tingling stop flowing through you, you'll know they got it. Jk. Buy a multimeter and put it on AC. When 120VAC is not shown then power is off.
what about the green ground screw????????????
I have the same question. My light I bought a wants me to put the ground wire on the green screw. Not sure how to do that?
Wasn't 20 minutes for me, mostly because it was my first time messing with a light fixture, and I had to find some different screws for it, and it was in the dark with a flashlight, but I got it done lol.
Those projects builds character! Lol 👍🏻 nice work.
My exterior garage lights are on a sensor but they're on during the day when neighbors' aren't.
Okay, I'm going to have to call the pro, because I do not have a junction box on mine, just a black and a white wire, no grounds, but there is a red wire that I can see about a quarter inch deep in the wall.
I used new wall bracket, what's the best way to gauge the distance so my nuts on the light fixture is tight??
I try to have less screw thread protruding beyond the mounting bracket for the fixture than I think I'll need. Sometimes, I put the cap nut on partway and determine how much additional thread length is needed by holding the screw against a side of the fixture's mounting deck.
The home or building's exterior may be a limiting factor. When I replaced light fixtures on vinyl siding, I realized I needed to have as much thread as possible behind the mounting plate to ensure the fixture was held securely.
