    GHB brought up good cam points. You buy cams per application. Long track, short track, drag racing. What have ya. The cam applications are endless for track applications. When I went from Moroso speedway to Daytona international Speedway I had to run different cams. Morose required low to mid rpm/tourq cams where Daytona we wanted the cams to make the majority of HP at top end . Daytona is huge and long. Hope this helps

    With cams it's all about the application. NA, turbo, Nitros. Where do you want the power? Low end mid range or top end. Also what kinds of mods have you done already? You also have to be careful on lift and duration as there might be interference issues. Back in the day myself and some of my friends were some of the first guys in our area doing LS VTEC conversions and most of our cars were high compression NA cars. We were using TYPE R pistons and valve train components including cams. The reason being is tuning was really predictable and all the numbers were usually consistent. We mostly stuck with B18B blocks but did do a B20 build using a B16 head with skunk components and Skunk2 cams. This was all back in the early 2000s and we definitely had tons of fun with our cars. Keep doing what you do bro and I'm definitely gonna sub.

    Awesome video! I see and hear alot of people who say to stop "wasting money" on a non-vtec head or swap a vtec head and these people don't understand that it's not always about being the fastest but just the journey to getting your car where you want, in the way you wanna do it, not how the internet suggests or exactly how someone in a how to build guide does it. Also in the EF chassis you don't need all that much power to get up and go. I used to have a '91 SI and building an 11.8:1 all motor single cam w/ a stage 1.5 cam was one of the most rewarding things I've done.(I went with 1.5 for the low end torque if I remember correctly) Just advanced my timing and put 91 octane(If I knew then what I know now I would have ran higher octane, I may have used octane booster but I cant remember)and she ripped and pulled on untuned LS Vtec DC2 Integras.
    Sure you'll get a bit more power out of a Vtec head but that intern adds mechanical parts and the more moving parts the more chances of having a mechanical failure. Non-Vtec is a true enthusiast build, is reliable and it requires less maintenance and fuss overall. No wiring vtec, no solenoid leaks/failure, no tuning secondary fuel maps for vtec. Had it not been for the cam bolts it would have been up and running in a relaxed afternoon. Props for getting it figured out, I've second guessed my work plenty of times but practice makes perfect and now for those who watched this they now have the knowledge of what to watch for in a B20 build. Personally would have just shaved the bolts but I like everything to look as stock as possible. Someone mentioned easy tuning access which makes your cuts superior, especially when you get engine management and to dyno tuning. 👍🏼 Thanks for uploading your experience/experiment!

    • @MrDelsoleg11

      I would go with an 84mm bore unless you want to bore it over which isn't recommended on a b20b block, max i would machine is to 84.25mm. Another thing would be you would have to mill the sides of the rod end 1mm on each side to clear those pistons. If you want higher compression on a OEM style piston i would go with a 84mm p30, those are exact fit so it's something you can do in your garage.

    • @rgreerjr
      @rgreerjr 5 лет назад

      PrimeGarage I meant 84mm my bad, and you won’t need to mill the rods because these are factory gsr pistons as they don’t come in 84mm, they are gsr styled b20 pistons, they have a slight dome to them. It’s basically a cast domed piston

      @MrDelsoleg11 5 лет назад

      @@rgreerjr I've built b20vtec with those pistons. And yes you need to mill the the stock rod end 1mm since that piston has more material on the inside of it with any b18c style piston. Only b16 style pistons are direct fit, Unless he's gonna use aftermarket rods then he'll be ok.

    Good video and it sounds much better with the new cams. Being a speed density ECU, it is probably running lean and should gain a bit more with a proper tune. The non vtec exhaust valve clearances actually seem to like to tighten up over time, so it is smart to check them every 10K mi or so or else eventually you'll risk burning an exhaust valve. The heavier springs can accelerate the process. I bought my B20Z2 cheap with a burned exhaust valve, rebuilt the head, and my lash adjustment logs since show it losing about two thousandths in the last 10K mi, and that is with single supertech springs and stock cams. For the video I would add a mention that it is smart to use assembly lube on initial valvetrain assembly especially with heavier springs and more agressive cams, and all Honda guys know, but for the sake of completeness, readjust ignition timing whenever the distributor is reinstalled.

    • @GarageBuiltHondas

      Great post/comment! Excellent info and suggestions. I took note of all of it. 👍 I did a small finger lube when I first installed the cams/cam caps, you can see the part where I set the cam in to check fitment, then pulled it right back out and went off camera to the ground where I ran oil along the mating surfaces. I didn't however film the part where I dumped oil over all of the valvetrain before putting the VC on and starting. Many have questioned it, but I was more concerned with getting my $700 camera dirty. Thanks for contributing such a thoughtful message to this video! I love those kind!

    Awesome vid man, and rather than play up a bunch of hype, you gave really objective information. Well done. Once you get it on a dyno you should be able to squeeze a bit more out of it. The trick to getting power out of a high revving small displacement engine is getting it to breath, and a cam is a step in the right direction. Years ago, like in the 80s years ago, I was building L18 Datsun engines for racing autocross. I had pushed everything I could externally with Weber side drafts, header, and electronic ignition, but that tapped out at about 135hp. Eventually I installed a stage 2 cam on my own car thinking I was going to light shit up at the local track, but it barely did anything except make it idle rough. :o( By next season I saved up some scratch and had the head ported and machined the biggest valves I could get into it. Also built it back up with a set of BRE Racing titanium springs and retainers. It took me awhile to tune it, but once I got it dialed in I was making 182hp and pulling hard right up to it's 9K redline. All that power in a 2000 lb. car... that thing was an absolute monster. I had visions of racking up a bunch of Fastest Laps Of The Day, but some English A-hole with an Austin Mini Cooper that had an Alfa Romeo engine swapped in it stole all my glory. To this day English accents piss me off. LOL

      I have a 720 Nissan with a z24 engine (1985). I want to get at least 300HP out of it but after a lot of research, it seems the old z24 just doesn't have it in it without spending a fortune on it (even then, it would be difficult it seems). Considering throwing in a small block V8 but would rather stick to using a Japanese engine. Any suggestions? The goal of the truck is to keep costs down, at least get 300HP and have fun in the process.

    • @Datsun510zen
      @Datsun510zen 5 лет назад

      @@NotSoCrazyNinja Yeah, Not only would you have to spend a fortune to get 300hp out of an N/A NAPS-Z, it would only do it for a short time before needing another fortune. My first advice is to not getting hung up on an arbitrary number. Your 720 is designed around a 133hp 145lb ft engine, so anything over 225hp, you're looking at many other upgrades to survive it. Sure an SBC might make the big big, but putting one in a 720 and doing it right is a costly labor intensive project that has proven to produce less than satisfying results. I would invest in a platform that can be swapped relatively easy and upgradable to make more power as desired. The RS20 makes big hp, but you'd want the s14 or 15 with VVT. Otherwise turbo lag and low torque of the cheaper S13 (what I have in my 510) would be frustrating in a truck. The KA is a much cheaper step up and has good potential. VG30 VQ35DE are another options with up to 300+ hp, lots more torque and sound AMAZING. For the money, and ease of upgrades, the EcoTec 4-V6 platforms are also worth looking into.

    The intake valve will normally go into a float condition first because it’s normally bigger than the exhaust valve and has more mass. When the valve bounces, it’s essentially increasing the duration past the optimum point. The result is you lose compression as some of the intake charge flows past the valve and back into the intake port. When that happens the pressure pushes back and you will see it disrupt the flow of the intake charge.
    That movement back out of the combustion chamber disrupts the velocity in the other intake manifold runners as well as the metering signal, and it just kills your power.
    The ideal cam would control the valve so that at the right time the valve goes to full open, and when it’s time to close it goes immediately to full shut.

      @@harley8728 I'm actually working with Cole over at Bad Guys Worldwide for a regrind and his head work. He's got a ZC DOHC specific package now. My build isn't the normal D series setup, I off road and trail ride. Need a bit different profile for my cams. All bottom end, not so much top end
