      Maybe the belly mower would work better for blowing leaves? Or chop them and spray them to the side

  • @christophersiano969
    @christophersiano969 2 года назад +52

    I've used a side discharge mower deck for over 20 years for clearing trails. I swap to an old set of high lift blades that create a huge suction and blower discharge. Same setup is used to clear organics off the gravel driveway before grading and to remove pine needles from the driveway do I don't end up with pine needle reinforced ice on those early storms.

    • @reno4819
      @reno4819 2 года назад +3

      I agree and I raise the deck so I don't hit roots and allow for more airflow. Cheers!

    • @christophersiano969
      @christophersiano969 2 года назад +4

      @@reno4819 Correct. In my case, I put the deck up in the "transport" location. That clears the roots and larger rocks on the trail and helps keep from getting a huge build-up in front of the deck. The other thing is to make sure you don't do it when the leaves are wet. Lastly, keep up with the leaves. Don't let them get too deep or the lower layers never dry out.
      On the gravel driveway, I run the deck a bit lower as it helps blow off the sides of the drive better. It also gives the underside of the deck a nice sand blasting which cleans it up for winter storage. When I yank off the high lift blades, I hit the underside with a few passes of spray paint and I'm good for the winter storage.

    I have to hand it to you. You show everyone what works and have no problem showing us what doesn't work just as well. Which I think is great cause I could see someone saying just use a land rake that will do it. For the trails in my woods I just used my zero turn. Blew all the leaves off pretty good. Lasted about a week and with the leaves still falling I was back to where I was. That was ok with me. Like you said...it's kind of nice just being in the woods as is. Thanks for showing us the good with the not so good.

    This is where a traditional rough cut mower comes in handy. The mower pushes the material to one side, and usually with it in a higher setting, acts like a large fan and pushes the debris off to one side. The added bonus is that, unlike a traditional mower deck, it can hit things and not risk a blade or sheave assembly.

    3 point rotary sweeper would be my choice. i use mine for yard cleanup in the spring and it doesnt do any damage to the lawn, and doesnt get hung up on roots sticks or small stumps. youve seen it in my arsenal in your follower mashup video your brother put out!

    Courtney as always I really enjoy your videos, keep up the great work!
    As you and some others in the comments stated a mower deck would give you what your looking for. Plus if you raised the deck to the highest setting with a set of old blades (great idea mentioned by another) you could fly around those trails with good results.
    May the good Lord bless you with 'The Big One' and keep all hunters safe. Amen

    I really enjoyed this video! My land here in north Florida has several trails. I use the mower deck and then just use the blower. I'll also use the landscape rake if a storm has come through and left a lot of debris from the trees. I actually like some leaves on the trails to keep the trails from getting muddy. Thanks for showing what the different implements do in this situation.

    The belly mower even hanging several inches up will suck up, mulch and throw to the side, leaving clean trails.
    I was going to buy a leaf blower when we first bought our place, but I use our little ride-on to clear the gravel driveway. Does a great job.

    I have the de-thatcher and love it. It works great for picking up leaves and pine needles off my 800’ driveway. While watching your struggles I thought to myself ‘why not use your mid mount mower’ and low and behold great minds think a like. Rarely do the stars align for leaves to be moved while they’re dry so I agree with your conclusion - enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Good hunting and have fun with your kids.

    Hitting it with a backpack blower before using the tractor can be a huge help. Blow the light weight organics off the top before they clog all the tractor attachments. They do make PTO blowers for 7x the price of a backpack blower if you just have to do the work while sitting down:)

    Don’t overthink it. A regular mower deck will work fine. Chops up the leaves & blows them out into the brush leaving nice clean trail. Use it all year on my trails. Small 3 acre woods w/ about 3/4 to 1 mile of winding trails thru it. Takes 15 or 20 min.

    Man, I feel your pain, and its always easier to look and critique via a keyboard. I love your videos, but your right, a side discharge mower, or some kind of blower attachment. But to save you a buck or 2 on that whole set up, just get a BR800 backpack blower. Im sure you have something similar, but you woulda got further and saved a bit of time and aggravation.

    What doesn't work is almost as important as what does work. Now when folks ask if either of those two attachments are a good choice for leaf clearing, you can point to this and say "probably not the best choice". As many others have said - a blower of some sort, or a front mounted angled sweeper.

    Good Morning Courtney, working & maintaining hundred of miles of trails (mountain biking) recommend the best option of walking with "backpack blower" which you will benefit a single track trail for walking/biking and eliminating either side from erosion with leaf coverage. Good luck and thanks for your informative videos.

    After flail mowing, strap on a mid mount mower deck with high lift blades and with the discharge chute removed, or tied up out of the way. Set your cut depth to 4" or higher and go to town. It'll suck all of that leafy mulch right up and shoot it off of the trail. Just watch out for debris ricochet back at you from tree trunks that are close to the chute.

    May have already been mentioned, but a pine straw take is another low cost attachment and it does pretty good with leaves. In a woods setting, it collecting some sticks along the way helps it grab more leaves and it isn't as harsh on the ground or lawn as a landscape rake is.

    I was using an ATV chain harrow on my trails Monday. I had it flipped to the aggresive direction and it took a few passes to get to a bare path but then again it would pile up all the leaves and eventually leave behind a huge pile that it jumped over and deposited. Still had to do some manual raking to clear those up. It "worked" but not as effecient as I would like. I'm thinking something like a vacuum rake - sort of like a snow blower but for leaves - would be interesting and might be good. It would suck up the leaves and discharge them off to the side away from the trail.

    It’s a good point that when you rake by hand, you make many passes (as you stand and rake). When you rake by tractor, you make one pass … so, it stands to reason that you’re going to have to drive several passes to rake the leaves off.

    I use a mower deck on trails like that with the discharge blocked off or a mulch kit so the trail doesn’t turn into a water way years down the road. Detachers and landscape rakes over years will tend to create lower spots and will eventually turn into the wet and soggy areas. The idea is to keep mulch and debris on the trail to keep it built up higher ground.

      That attachment is also multiple thousands of dollars and doesn't make sense unless you have a large property with lots of debris

    Pine needle rake could be better option between the dethatcher rake and landscape rake. Works great in our area.

    What about a front mount rotary broom or your mid mount side discharge 60" deck?

    power broom would have made short work of that.

    You should try a 3 point hitch blower or a billy goat 13 horse self propelled blower

    Kubota BX series with a mid pto mower deck with a rear pto grass catcher/bagger. I'm sure the green guys got a competing product. If you got miles of trails I think all you can do is get a blade and pretend you are plowing snow.

    That rake doesn’t look like it works well from behind. In fact you moved more leaves backing up. What I’d do is mount it to the front of the tractor, then use the mower deck to blow anything that get missed off to the side.

    Why did you take off the quick hitch to mount the mower?

    I think the landscape rake was the right tool for this job.

    Look left. Look right. You get the trail clean. Wind picks up. Its covered again. You push them off to the side. Again, wind. To have them clear for an day or two for hunting. I would use an side discharge mower with an bagging system. The leaves would get chopped up and you can get more done without dumping as much. Then when you bump the leaves out of the bags, they wont blow back onto the trail as easy. I hope your hunt goes well.

    I think the mower deck would be the best bet. I use the mower deck to get rid of leaves on my yard.

    I agree with everyone recommending a blower. Front mounted, one and done.

    U-Mount………attaches to tractors, zeroturns and is a large leave blower. Believe they are even looking for dealers. Check them out. They fix on atvs and golf carts too.

    The best way I know to use my 60" belly mower. It will clear it down to bare ground in one pass. The only problem is it will muddy up if you get a lot of rain.

    Never tried this but a box blade maybe?? Seems like it would be about as effective as the dethatcher without clogging up as bad. Should be able to fill up the box and then dump them out. Probably have to stop and dump a lot though but maybe better than unclogging those tines. I’m going to try this later actually.

    how about a blower attachment, maybe even a snow blower? Seems they don't need to be mulched, just removed from the path...

    I think a landscape rake would be best or a huge leaf blower like a belly mower!!!

    On a 1025r I'd use a belly mower set high with gator blades. My x580 and 54" deck with gator blades makes short work of leaves and debris.

    I use the mower deck to clean the leaves from the gravel driveway. A lot faster than the DeThatcher
