Light houses are an underutilized setting if you ask me, as someone who was a sailor in the usn i can say that even if you have company being in the middle of the ocean is isolating as all hell. I cant even begin to imagine how stir crazy you'd become being stuck on a rock in a tower by your self.
Some people do prefer the solitude. But it does take a special sort of person to take that sort of job. Doubly so if you're out there to guard humanity from the horrors unknowable, and not just to keep ships off the rocks...

Black waves teeming with salt foam to smother this young mouth with pungent slime, to choke ye, engorging your organs til’ ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more -- only when he, crowned in cockle shells with slitherin’ tentacle tail and steaming beard take up his fell be-finned arm, his coral-tine trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest and plunges right through yer gullet, bursting ye -- a bulging bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now and nothing for the harpies and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the Dread Emperor himself -- forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the sea, for any stuff for part of Winslow, even any scantling of your soul is Winslow no more, but is now itself the sea!
Shhh...you're going to wake *it* up...

Ha, this reminds me of those excellently appalling little lighthouses in northern Scotland and the south coast of England. It's like they attract hailstones.

...and another thing...
How in blazes did anyone build a lighthouse on the Dreamer's back without rousing it?
If hammers and music are enough to bother it, how was an entire construction effort kept up without disaster?
It might have been built before they knew what the island was, and they just got lucky enough to build it in the part of the REM cycle when the monster was sleeping most deeply? Or, you know, she might just be crazy.

I never considered that...I was taking her entire monologue at face value.
Could it possibly be that we are simply being sent out as a replacement for her, and there is no Dreamer?
A person who has spent too much time staring at the horizon and begun to see fish-people standing in the shallows might not be the best person to have in charge of a lighthouse...
@@ADragonSpeaks I tried to write the story in such a way that you could choose to belive her and risk you own sanity, or choose not to belive her and risk waking up the cosmic horror if you were wrong.

Except for those few earthquake tremors. They could be coincidence...or they could be something darker.
Heck. Now you have my mind working along a Dreamer/No Dreamer path that is slightly disturbing either way...

Was the job description unclear? It's really quite simple: keep the giant lovecraftian horror, on who's back you live, sound asleep.

I feel like there should be some sort of introductory manual we might be able to read...something that might provide further details...
@@ADragonSpeaks There's no manual because... well... there's nothing we can do. It it wakens, it wakens. Filling this position is mostly about making everyone else think we've got it under control, to be honest.
@@nightmotherasmr It worries me to think that millions might be in terrifying, incomprehensible peril because some over-stressed lighthouse keeper accidentally dropped a frying pan while cooking dinner...
