The little known "bonus" that outshines the "real" material. I don't have many CDs these days, but the original issue of Axis Mutatis with is piece of genius attached is one of them. Absolute gold.
It is a little known fact that this is the ACTUAL ORIGINAL version of the Axis Mutatis album that was delivered to One Little Indian to follow up the Boss Drum album. It was rejected by Derek Birkett ay OLI & they were told to go away & do a comercial version of it. That is why Axis Mutatis is quite mixed. By the way...I used to manage the Beatmasters!
Drageslukeren I think it was probably that OLI had kind of given up on them by then, and the feeling was mutual (as you may know, the first letter of each track spells out F.U.C.K.B.I.R.K.E.T. 😂)
I did not know that. So what was the deal with 'Different Drum'? Was that what the guys wanted to do, but OLI wouldn't let them at the time so 'Boss Drum' was the result? Or did Colin decide to take the band in a different direction after BD?
thats interesting AAHQ - I must say 'tho that actually listening to this version of arbor bona arbor mala is a tad like listening to a dodgy tape recording of the actual arbor bona arbor mala by the shamen.....
Beatmasters, Coldcut and Mark Moore really broke and delivered dance into the commercial area in the UK. Obviously Coldcut "evolved" and are still delivering. So what happened to The Beatmasters?? (And have you got Bettys number? Damn that girl is still so cute :) )
This must be one of the greatest ambient pieces of all time. Musically brilliant, spiritually uplifting, intelligent, wisel full of love, I could go on and on forever. Thanks for posting.. One wonders what ever became of Angus. Anyone know?
I used to buy albums based off their cover art and an initial listen. For trance CDs, I figured that an intricately designed cover matched the music. This is how I ended up with Arbor Bona Arbor Mala. In a meditation, this music makes you travel.
The first track is actually sampled from Destination Eschaton (Destination Nemeton Original Version), pretty hard to find that version of the track online
how did I miss this one? thought I d heard all Shamen - still its good to know that the Shrooms were good as well as the ezz, better late than nev.......good find, great upload!
To this day I'm still pissed off that I lost my ambient CD from the double set! The cassette recording I made is some small consolation, but thank heavens for youtube and thanks for posting, 2trancentral
I remember when this album came out and I assumed it would not be good. But I thought I'd check it out 25+ years after the fact and it's mint! A nice little time capsule.
This is rather nice. As a kid in the 90s I thought this ambient stuff was a bit crap until I accidentally bought Different Drum and fell asleep with it playing one night.
-Roaster McDdoug..... Mine was a 2CD boxset too...Perhaps a `ltd` edit...OR (.....) this here is only HALF of IT!!???? I remember going to buy axis mutasis and being confused as I thought it was a double album .turns out it was ! ...all these years later and I get to hear it finally .beautiful . do wish I'd it had back in the day ..great times 😊
Shamen's Chill Out, indeed. Transamazonia lost in my mind. Love this album so much. If anyone is curious what CGA has been up to in recent years, see Pablo Sandoz x Indidginus on our channel.
not sure which tracks they are but from 9mins-17mins and from 25:20 to 33:40 Xochipili's Return, I think, I was Ayahuascan sailing the cosmos with Jah Wobble on bass, this whole album is mint
I bought this on tape when it was released, and it still blows me away today!! Could Demeter, the goddess of harvest (I think) also be a code for DMT? The way-outness of this piece certainly makes me think it is such....

You're right , the vibe does change . But no , I can't find them anywhere on the web - and I'm pretty adept at finding things lol . Thanks for the lighting quick response -something I always greatly appreciate . Hope you change your mind though ... my CD's are in another state . I just want to nab the complete Arbor Bona Arbor Mala . You're my only hope , Obi Wan Kenobi ( paraphrase ).
I used to love these guys and played them on my radio show in the 90s regularly, some of the best stuff of the 90s along with the Orb and future sound of london. the whole axis mutatis album rules.. btw the best electronic now is bassnectar
Gelgerson, dancing to the Shamen got me through so many hard times. Move Any mountain was my mantra. I was a single parent, suffering, in Appalachia and all I had was that cassette tape. Eventually, I went to medical school. I am a psychiatrist now and cannot wait until the time when I can facilitate healing using psychedelics legally. It wasn't until years later that I heard that they were talking about Ayahuasca. It makes me wonder if "seeds" weren't planted all those years ago. when I finished my training, said to my daughter, "I could not have made it without you thank you." She asked for me to take she and her friend to Atlanta to see Skrillix. We loved Bassnectar too and started traveling around to see him. It is how I recovered my soul after medical school Dubstep led me to drum and bass, back to my beloved Shamen. Incredible journey. Now I just need a partner who shares my love for this music.
Teresa Cone hope you find your love. This music is for rare people. We are many, but scattered, together in thought we can move any mountain. Much love

Rio Negro es un tema que suena parecido a un folckore de la patagonia, de hecho lo escucho y me imagino rodando en esas rutas infinitas de noche en el sur argentino rodeado de montañas y el cielo a full de estrellas
This isn’t the first time DNA sequences have been translated into music. In 1995, for example, the British band The Shamen collaborated with Ross King to produce a track called S2 Translation, which is based on the coding sequence for the 5HT-S2 receptor. The track was generated in a way that sounds similar to Takahashi’s and Miller’s method:
I bought the double CD when it was released and I've probably played axis mutatis a handful of times - I much prefer this. I actually have 2 copies of the double cd as I lost my original and bought another, then found the original.

When this came out back in '95 I wouldn't have touched it will a barge poll. Well, it's 2022 and I recently bought the 2CD LTD Edition for a £1, why not eh! Give it a go. A lot of the actual album (CD1) has in my opinion dated quite badly, however that's not to say that it's complete crap, it's alright (I need more time with it). The bonus disc (CD2) is pretty good and I foresee myself listening to this more tbh. I'll give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️✩✩. Feeling generous.
Whoever holds the rights to the album, so the band itself, or the record label. Never heard anyone calling Shamen or One Little Indian savages lol funny
I remember this wasn’t very well received by certain music critics, I happen to think its rather good, not there best but certainly better than a lot of the shite chart wannabes jumping on the band wagon for a quick buck , some nice ethereal melodies in here !

What changed by the time of Hempton Manor? Enough commercial success for other Electronic acts?

when I bought this double album I listened to the main album once then this one for ever more...Brilliant
Same here!
DJ KRPT they were always so contrasting. I loved the sound design but never the vocal laden euro dance stuff.
Yep, and me too, still really love it
It was like buying a cheese sandwich and finding a fantastic gourmet meal in the box under it!
Imagine the joy we felt of getting this bonus chilled masterpiece. It became my meditation & inspiration to travel to the amazon. Pure love

This sounds even nicer twenty years later... it's a classic, although I surely didn't know it would be at the time of first hearing.

Thank you so much. For the life of me I couldn't remember the name of this band or album and finding it was a joy :)
The best music of The Shamen
Thanks for the memory. Good to hear this again.

Ensoniq Mirage starts at 17:23? Beauty!
Had this double CD set. AB AM was my go-to music when I needed to cram at university.
Ahead of Time..Ambient was born here I do suppose and surely did happen in Britain
Ambient was born many many years before 1995!
Masterpiece
memories..
According to Google Translate, "abor bona arbor mala" can detect this as Bengali language into English as "Again woven big garland".
stunning

Thank you Shamen, for this wonderful piece of mind-expanding ambient.

I'm guessing 5/8?
Amazing!!!
