End goal state is this: 1. Simple DNS server on the ER-X 2. DNS server that is VLAN aware and can provide DNS resolution across all VLAN's 3;. DNS server that is VLAN aware and can provide DNS resolution in isolation for specific VLAN's 4. Capable of resolving DHCP clients without forwarding unqualified names to any upstream DNS 5. Capable of preventing unqualified names (regardless of DHCP) to any upstream DNS 6. DNSSEC interoperability Oh and, decent selection on the Blue Moon beer :) Try adding a shot of an orange liqueur shot and be happier!
Thanks sir. I used to edit the c:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts file on my windows computer, but this is not the same on a phone or a mac computer. Doing it on the router it self is great for my home web server.
2:30 You don't need to specify a public name server if your WAN setup pulls DHCP from your ISP, it will also pull their DNS server automatically. Setting an external name server is not required. Most people like to use public DNS instead of ISP DNS, just want to clarify that's it's not a required step.
hi willie, i know is been a lot of time since this video but i have a problem with router and i was wonder if this solution work for do the job with only one vlan instead the entire br0 ? thanks
Hi Willie, i know this was a long time ago but its not working for me, I set up Open DNS on system and then I put the IP of the router in DHCP as a DNS server, in that moment I loose internet, i have static routes, could those made a problem with this configuration ?? thanks in advance !
thanks for sharing, +1!! Is there a way to get the EdgeRouter to do dynamic DNS. like a new laptop hops on the network then you can use it's hostname via dns instead of having to login to ER and use wizard to add it?
If DNS1 was left blank then it will automatically assign the router as DNS would it not ? But what if you set your Router System Name server to another DNS. What will take priority ?

The EdgeRouter also adds DNS names for the aliases in DHCP reservations. Very nice

as I tried if you leave system name server empty, then you will get error when you apply change to DNS host names
Thank you, Willie! I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. I was really overthinking it.
Thank you for the video how do you do this on a USG
Thanks! This was exactly what I was looking for.
Another awesome video Willie
Thanks for the video. You saved my life. I couldn't figure out where to find the static DNS hosts. I think it's weird to put it under wizards.
I build an Apache Spark and Hadoop cluster using five Raspberry Pi 4 and it would be awesome to be able to use DNS with it.
Can we do a video on how to setup a full blown DNS? Lets register the hostnames and do the whole thing
nice video, do you have some tutorial regarding proxy server?
