49 years ago- which doesn’t seem possible- i walked into Lake St. Station record store on the campus of UW-Madison. I was a freshman and as i browsed, there was a woman, all alone, dancing like there was no tomorrow, next to the front counter. The music wafting through the store turned out to be ‘Your Gold Teeth’ and it was so fascinating and so unlike anything else id heard at the time, i grabbed a copy (guessing about $4?) and starting my amazing, lifelong journey with Steely Dan- so glad you two have discovered them as well-- you’re just getting your feet wet!! Enjoy the upcoming concert!
I was a college freshman in 1973 living in the campus dorm. I remember being in the lunch line at the Student Union building and hearing music blasting through the speakers. "Reeling in the Years" was often heard. I went on to buy "Can't Buy A Thrill" and every other Steely Dan album that followed on vinyl. A wonderful part of my collection! But more than that, I was a young man living through all of this music history!
Guys I absolutely love seeing your reactions to Steely Dan. Warms my old heart to know that people can have the chance to find those albums for the first time and love and appreciate them the same way I have for many years. Keep going and enjoying the experience together.
Ah, man. Can guarantee you'll be coming back to Your Gold Teeth 2 time & time again. Its up there with Glamor Profession as one of their sneakiest masterpieces. That Denny Dias solo is widely revered as one of the Dan's finest. Beautiful, melodic & it's so damn hard to play!
Thank you Scott Anderson for getting NicknLex to play these two songs together! And thank you NnL for playing the songs on your channel as you are the first to do them (together). Both, are two of my favorite deep SD cuts. One is a bit funky and the other (YGTII) more jazz influenced. The guitar solo in YGTII sometimes brings me to tears, it is so beautiful its hard to keep in the emotion. The song could be easily played in a Jazz club without the singing. Thank you!!!
I don't even know how to say this. I envy your self control. I remember Aja was one of the first 3 albums I bought with my own money and it had just been released. From that point I devoured Steely Dan as fast as i could afford it. I now, at this age, know every song like the back of my hand and Alex, there isn't a dud in the entire catalogue. I relish the moments when a particular change up is on its way and then to see the looks on your faces when it's revealed is just wonderful. If I wasn't in a bit of a financial bind at the moment I'd be your biggest Patreon contributor, hopefully this bind I'm in will end by May. Thank you both so much for your channel! Well said. I heard Reelin when it came out and I devoured everything they put out after that. Maybe one or two songs I'd pick up the needle on but really as you said no duds. My favorite is Katy but Royal Scam close second.

What a jam!!! “Your Gold Teeth”, when I first heard this song I couldn’t stop playing it over and over. Very underrated song from this album, but one of my favorite -if there’s such a thing as an actual favorite song ever from Steely Dan…🤘🏼😎
I love watching you guys react to my favorite band. It was great playing these albums when they first came out and they never seem to get old. Best wishes my friends!🎼
I enjoyed your enthusiastic and heartfelt reaction to Your Gold Teeth I and II. I first saw Steely Dan at 17 in 1974 at Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino, Ca. Fagen, Becker, Denny Dias, Skunk Baxter, Jim Hoder. Even then it was “Musical Perfection”.
I have listened to and loved Steely Dan for decades. When this song was released I did not appreciate it as I do today. I was not into "jazz" per se. They have so many songs that I love... but somehow my tastes matured over time and I now can say that this is my favorite Steely Dan song. It has everything.... great lyrics, great melodies, great vocals and most of all great transitions.
Never really listened to much of them before, apart from their obvious hits, but now I am hooked! A lot of bands have produced a commercial hit to get them noticed and of course for financial reasons too, but behind these hits, lies a band of great musicians.
Thanks for all the Steely Dan postings! You can't imagine how I feel watching these. I discovered the band in my teens and became such a fanatic that I basically forced my friends to jump on the Dan train (It was not that hard for most). When I re-listen to these songs as you listen my appreciation for these guys is renewed.
You are sweet and lovely people, with an open mind towards all genres and styles. Love to see your faces light up as you discover. Bless you and do more!
It makes ME sooooo happy to see how happy SD's music make YOU!!! They(SD) are special... not a bad song among them all! Nick.... it felt like you were about to break into tears, at one point, it makes you so happy!! I feel you! Regards, ALinCAL
Thanks guys, we all love and appreciate what you do so well and poignantly. I think I remember an article in Modern Drummer years back where Jeff Porcaro related how harrowing the experience was of recording this track(Your Gold Teeth ll)because Donald and Walter were so hard to please apparently, but the results are, of course, spectacular.
I love.... Jazz, Rock and Fusion on their own...... but to combine them like this is genius. This song is nearly 50 years old and it sounds as good today as the day it was released.
Excellent! Just so satisfying to watch your reactions, especially Steely Dan. Thanks to you both. And to Scott. Great pairing of T-shirts and tracks. And you can hear Donald’s jazz background - he writes in his autobiography that he was very young (from 12 years old) going into NYC to frequent jazz clubs to watch the greats - Mingus, Miles, Thelonious Monk, etc. Thanks again. I’m happy 😊 💕
This song is my top Dan song, "Your Gold Teeth II" These chords are excellent. And that guitar solo!!! 2nd was always "Night By Night". 3rd :"Pearl Of The Quarter"
I've had ♪ 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘦𝘦𝘵𝘩 / 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘭𝘭 ♬ stuck in my head for about 4 days now! And then here comes lovely Nick & Lexi right on time! So appreciate how much homage & respect you pay to Fagen & Beck. It's just terrific. ♡
Life long Dan fan here, grew up on their music from Can’t Buy a Thrill onward. The first Gold Teeth has that amazing keyboard solo that flows right into another killer guitar solo. The lyrics are as sophisticated as the music, classic lines one after the next. “Torture is the main attraction, I don’t need that kind of action”. You guys are fun to watch, glad you finally caught the SD bug...hope the concert was awesome! I’ve seen them many times along with Donald Fagen solo shows and Dukes of September with Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs. All memorable shows!
Your comments make me jealous for my youth. Your discovering these tunes again and sharing it with us brings back a rush of great memories. So glad our brains are somehow wired the same and we can like it together.
The guitar solo on Gold Teeth II was yet another epic solo by Denny Dias. He was one of my favorite Steely Dan guitarists (along with Larry Carlton...of course!) because of the creativity, phrasing, feel and dynamics in his solos which made them interesting and memorable. Fun Denny Dias trivia....after doing music full time, he went on to become a programmer and lead developer for the Nantucket Corporation who made a programming language called Clipper which was used to create database and business programs in the days of MS-DOS, although he still continued to play music part time.
Denny was one of the original members and had much of the guitar input throughout many of their albums especially in the early years. Great to enjoy Gold Teeth with you "two"! S.G.
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter was another founding member. Of course later, when he left Steely Dan he went on to join the Doobie Brothers, along with Michael McDonald.
Denny Dias is ridiculously unheralded as a founding member of Steely Dan. His electric sitar solo on Do It Again makes makes that tune and his bebop solo part on Bodhisattva is also great. There are others but his solo on Your Gold Teeth II is poetry.
You said it all in this video! Nothing else to say! Steely Dan never disappoints. And im lucky to be in the middle of my journey discovering this special music! Thanks so much , it fun discovering them with you all! I agree with the supporter that said you should do them once a week until your concert! Love to you both! And everyone hear! Loved these songs!
Love both of these songs. Doing one Dan song every week until your concert would be fantastic. King of the World from Countdown to Ecstasy is a great one too. But practically every one of their songs from their first 7 albums is outstanding.
Have you not done King of the World? It's the ultimate lockdown song. So prescient. I listened to it over and over to get through COVID, and I pity the fool who didn't have it for comfort! ;)
I TOLD YOU! You made a great choice putting Your Gold Teeth and Your Gold Teeth II together in one listen! OK , disclaimer, I honestly cried to your reaction. The looks on your faces as the songs hooked you was pure ecstatic overload. Like you had been hit with a hanmer. Try Negative Girl for this same vibe, and Lunch With Gina for another jaw dropping moment! Im gonna go find a tissue now...
I was in jr. and sr. high school when the Dan started putting out hits, which I heard often on the radio. I never bought any of their albums during that time; I was focused elsewhere (Chicago; Loggins & Messina; Jim Croce; Seals & Crofts; Moody Blues; Supertramp). After a couple years as a missionary in Indonesia, I made a calculated effort to expand my library; acquiring two or three albums at a time every Friday (payday) after work at Licorice Pizza (the best record store ever). I was such a faithful patron they gave me the employee discount. That's when I started buying up all the Steely Dan (which at that time was only seven albums), and Led Zeppelin, Yes, Genesis, Stevie Wonder, and started branching off into Jazz (John Klemmer, Dave Brubeck, Pat Metheny, Bob James). So, I've loved Steely Dan for forty+ years, but watching reaction videos like yours, really helps me appreciate them (and others) more--much more--than I did. So, thank you for that. And, I don't think you'll find a single stinker in the bunch. The only two songs that popped into my head when you said that you hoped you wouldn't hate any Steely Dan songs, were East St. Louis Toodle-oo, a cover of a Duke Ellington tune, and The Fez, an irresistible groove with nothing of consequence to relay other than the singer promises to always wear prophylactic protection during his prurient past times. But, as far as I'm concerned, they're fun. Perhaps not as dynamic as the rest of the catalogue, but not even close to crappy... Thanks for all you do to entertain us.
I always play these two songs together. I've said it before but I'm so glad you two are enjoying Steely Dan. Only a Fool Would Say That is a great one y'all will enjoy if you haven't heard it yet. And Pearl of the Quarter is a whole different vibe, but it's still a goodie
I discovered SD in 1982 at the age of 14. So dazzling to my teenage brain! Just in time to experience The Nightly when it came out. Still a huge fan at 54!
You’re reactions are priceless. When I first heard You’re Gold Teeth II , I was immediately blown away . That was 45 years ago😂. You two do an excellent job.
Nick, give your dad a call! Take a leap of faith and take the first step. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Love this reaction! Blessings and best wishes to you both!!
I can’t decide between Aja and Countdown to Ecstasy, as my favorite. Then again, do you really need to pick? They are all stupendous works of genius art.
That was Jeff Porcaro on the drums on Your Gold Teeth Two, and I think he was either 16 or 18 years old when he laid that track down. Talk about a prodigy! To me the whole Katy Lied album…but especially Your Gold Teeth 2, foreshadowed the sound of the Aja record. In fact I call Katy Lied “Aja Junior“ for that very reason. The interesting thing is they did the Royal Scam before they finally went full on in the direction of Aja, so it was an incredibly interesting diversion before they really let it fly on Aja.❤️
You need to listen to "My Old School" before the concert because the last two times I saw them I was the encore song. It is perfect for the closer and you need to be standing up like everyone else and belt out the words especially " I am NEVER going back to my old school"! Beyond the concert experience you need to hear the two songs the come after on the album;" Pearl of the Quarter" and the sublime "King of the World". Enjoy the music and enjoy the concert.
You're right about the jazz vibes -- I detected a bit of Vince Guaraldi Trio in the song, his earlier stuff that was the soundtrack from the earlier Peanuts/Charlie Brown TV specials. And I'll agree that you next have to do Show Biz Kids from Countdown to Ecstasy, with the lyric line "they've got the Steely Dan T-Shirt"...
Denny Diaz was an original member. In fact, it was his band and Donald and Walter joined it. It became obvious that their songs and musicianship was the heart of the group and it became their band. You are on my favorite album now. Boston Rag is fantastic. The whole album is great. Given your new attire you should do Show Biz Kids. You’ve “got the Steely Dan T-Shirt”! It was a song where they made fun of LA life, including themselves.
Dias advertised for a piano player and guitarist. "No hang-ups." Becker and Fagen answered the ad. When Garry Katz later invited songwriters Walter Becker and Donald Fagen to LA, they decided to record as a band, brought Denny Dias, Skunk Baxter, Jim Hodder in as musicians. David Palmer was brought in as the frontman but didn't have the attitude for the songs. Donald Fagen became the lead singer halfway through the Can't Buy a Thrill recording by default.
I love seeing you kids getting into the best session /studio band that ever excised.. 40 years i have been listening to every album they ever put out ❤❤❤❤
The “There ain’t nothing in Chicago for a monkey woman to do” is a nod to Count Basie’s “Going to Chicago Blues” where he says “There ain't nothing in Chicago that a monkey woman can do.” Studied jazzers from the very beginning.
Hi NicknLex, so good to see you completely blown away by more brilliance from 'The Dan'. Countdown to Ecstasy is a masterpiece, other tracks that have not been mentioned are The Boston Rag & King of the World. Also Chain Lightning from Katy Lied. The T Shirts are great by the way!!
Definitely have to listen to more SD songs to add to your library before your concert! I've seen them live and it's an unforgettable experience...so excited for you two!
NicknLex, you guys are wonderful. Sorry that I didn't comment a year ago at the time of this video. I just wanted to say that I love your reaction to Steely Dan's music. You mentioned in another video that we geriatrics were so blessed to hear this music back when it was first released. I'm 64, and I remember what I was doing back then when I first heard their music. But think about it; you too are blessed to hear such musicianship like Steely Dan. In fact, this is the legacy that is Steely Dan. A hundred years from now, someone will hear it, and the music will be just as valid as it was when it was first released.
Where are you seeing Steely Dan? I had a missed opportunity when they toured in Pennsylvania in the early 90's. Missed them again living in Washington. You two rock for me as well when you see them. I have loved all of their music since a girl growing up in the 70's. The incarnations have been so beautifully different. They have such a huge catalog. I too have listened to all albums 100's of times. I have a kinship with you 2. Thank you!!!
I find myself watching a lot of "reaction videos" and you guys are by far the best. Your passion for music really comes through. Especially for truly timeless stuff like Steely Dan and Pat Metheny. Looking forward to more!
Ahhh, back to my favorite band! I have every Steely Dan album and I've listened to them many times over the years, but I'm still amazed at how damn good every song is when I listen to a whole album.
Guys appreciate your strength to hold back and share with us. It’s like when I heard this in my teens I’m 65 now I was the only one in my group off friends that got the Dan. So now I’m reliving my youth with you guys with so much joy to hear these amazing songs through you’re eyes and ears such a joy. So thank you NicknLex So it would be wonderful take it from me if my son called me and said Dad forget everything thing just listen to this with me times to short let’s share a memory You are two lovely people Enjoy your Dan journey and maybe a full album reaction to Two against Nature on Patreon. Much love Steve ✌️❤️
Damn, his piano work is killing me.... So tight, beautifully executed, just what I needed as the sun goes down here in Portugal. Thanks for taking me back to first year University.
Love this I am reliving my Dan exploration thru you guys! From your First reaction to Peg, now u guys flashing the Dan merch what can I say…after you listen to so much SD so many other bands are just so uninspired. Well peace and love from Maine Dan man on the Coast!
These two songs are both beautiful but Gold teeth 2 is just pure gold to me with Denny Dias playing that tasty guitar section and that piano through out with cryptic lyrics .A short masterpiece!
Thanks for the REACTION! It looks like you enjoyed them. They are two of my favorite deeper cuts that don’t get as much attention as some of the other songs. Of course there’s a lot more great Steely Dan material. Dr. Wu from Katy Lied is probably the one I want played at my funeral. I bought all these albums when I was a kid when they first came out and wore them out trying to learn the songs. For a little background that’s Walter Becker on your gold teeth two on bass and Donald Fagen on keyboard they were more of a band at that time with a set lineup. I’m not 100% sure but I’m thinking that is Jeff Baxter, Jeff skunk Baxter on guitar on your gold teeth. On your gold teeth two that’s Jeff Pacarro on drums who later became the drummer for Toto, he’s on that whole album. And that crazy bebop jazz solo is Denny Dias. There’s an outtake of Katy Lied cuts that you can find on the Internet what features the solo with Donald Fagen listening in the booth he gets so excited he drops the F bomb when he hears Denny Diaz play that solo. It’s a great journey and I appreciate you sharing it with us. It was very special to have you guys react to this request for me. I’ll give it a rest and then request some more stuff later. Still anxious for you to try out some of that Walter Becker 11 Tracks of Whack album. As always with Alexa you should start with the first song Down in the Bottom. I will listen to this a couple of times and watch your faces and feel like I was in the seventh grade again. I really love your videos because it just takes me back I feel like I’m reliving it for the first time when I see your faces wrinkle and crinkle up and the big smiles come over your souls . It’s super special and a lot of fun. Keep on reeling with the feeling steely Wheely forever. I am happy it touched you and I am Anxious to hear you reflect more on these songs after you listen more. Scott A
Sorry for all the comments but I was stationed in Germany when "Countdown" was released and I listened to it every day. It quickly became my favorite album and then just followed Steely Dan for the rest of their career. I finally got to see them live in Dallas and they are coming soon to Fort Worth but I bought ticket for Sir Paul McCartney and cant afford more tickets after that. Keep Steely!!!
NIck....you're comments about your father made me cry. It's the musical equivalent of the father/son moment at the end of the film, Field of Dreams which makes me weep every time. Father/son stuff is powerful. Thank you for your openness. I prefer the beauty and longing of Gold Teeth II, but any Dan is pretty great Dan.
The magic of Donald's vocals is that he's so precise with his vocal timing, phrasing, tone he can double his vocals accurately, sing harmony over the top for that tight blend.
You’re reactions ARE special! I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched your reaction to The song Aja, Woman in Chains by Tears for Fears and From the beginning by ELP. Thank you so much!
Thanks for this. The thing about music of this era is how albums were created as one body of work, even double albums. It makes it tough for you as you only get one track at a time. These reactions make many us remember how it felt to hear this stuff for the first time.
What I especially like about Steely Dan: The music is sophisticated and fairly complex, yet it never ever loses the underlying groove.
That is SD in a nutshell.
The common theme in their music is "it is tasteful" and because of that the level of complexity, or the lack thereof, becomes less of a hindrance to the average listener.
And the hooky melodies. They make the sophisticated accessible.
@@CuriousGeorge1111 This. Nobody does complex AND catchy like the Dan

True, but I never thought there was anything else special about the song. It's one of the few Dan songs that is repetitive for me.

got this when released , wore it out , got another
This song is my top Dan song, "Your Gold Teeth II" These chords are excellent. And that guitar solo!!! 2nd was always "Night By Night". 3rd :"Pearl Of The Quarter"
YGTII is pure bebop. Love it!
Each dan album reminds me of a time in my life, been listening to them since 1972. And still do.
The guitar work in II is stupefying.
Okay, you have to listen to My Old School and Doctor Wu next time. Love the shirts!
Some of my favorite one too to go along with Bodhisaatva!
So good! I love watching you hear these songs for the first time 🔥❤️ Joy is the right description!
From end to end, Katy Lied is my favorite Dan album.
Your Gold Teeth (1 not 2) is my favorite SD song. Such a vibe! What playing!!!
Another great example of why we all enjoy your reactions so much!!!
Thank You!!👏👏
Denny Dias was an original member, and that gorgeous solo in Gold Teeth II was truly his finest moment with the band.
He seems to channel Les Paul a bit during one of the guitar runs.
Fun Denny Dias trivia....after doing music full time, he went on to become a programmer and lead developer for the Nantucket Corporation who made a programming language called Clipper which was used to create database and business programs in the days of MS-DOS, although he still continued to play music part time.
but this one is so sophisticated, yet funky. The definition of Steely Dan.
The Best Part of Listening to these songs are the reflections that one experiences afterwards. Watching Your Reactions is Emotionally Rewarding 😍👍
I always play these two songs together.
I've said it before but I'm so glad you two are enjoying Steely Dan.
Only a Fool Would Say That is a great one y'all will enjoy if you haven't heard it yet. And Pearl of the Quarter is a whole different vibe, but it's still a goodie
Imagine being a 15 year old high school freshman in 1973 and hearing the most amazing music ever released. Steely Dan never grows old.
Imagine? I was that 15 year old in 1973 (born in '58).
Yes, great music has no expiration date.
For me it was at 13.👍🏻
I discovered SD in 1982 at the age of 14.
My God, I'd forgotten what a great song GT2 is. Thank you so much.
I can’t decide between Aja and Countdown to Ecstasy, as my favorite. Then again, do you really need to pick? They are all stupendous works of genius art.
Gold teeth 2 reflects Katy Lieds feel so closely
II Words: Jeff Porcaro. Donald said he was the best musical drummer SD had ever used. He was 19-20 when this album was made.
Loved your comment about the specialness of experiencing Steely Dan together. I’m so happy for you guys!
Your Gold Teeth has grown on me like no other Steely Dan song has. Such an incredible song.
I check almost daily to see if you have reacted to a Dan Song. LOL!!! Awesome!
You two are giving me great joy, giving kudos to my favorite band from my youth, and still today!
A song I probably would not have ever heard had it not been for you two, thanks!
Countdown To Ecstasy is my favorite S.D. album, the guitar work on this album is incredible
One of my bucket list items is to meet Denny Dias and shake his hand in thanks for the joy he has brought to my life.
A pair of winners. The chord changes at the beginning of II send me into ecstasy.
YESSS!!!
I think My Old School should be next because you will definitely hear that at the concert. And everyone will be dancing 😀😀
Good point. It's guaranteed to be on the setlist.
The times I saw them it was the encore.
They got the shapely bods. They got the Steely Dan T-shirt.
And for the coup degrace they’re outrageous
@@steelyd2 “While the poor people sleeping with the shade on the light …”
Lex, in case it’s not obvious - all these comments are quoting lyrics. 👚👕
I love seeing you kids getting into the best session /studio band that ever excised.. 40 years i have been listening to every album they ever put out ❤❤❤❤
So glad you’ve been enjoying our Dan reactions!!
The “There ain’t nothing in Chicago for a monkey woman to do” is a nod to Count Basie’s “Going to Chicago Blues” where he says “There ain't nothing in Chicago that a monkey woman can do.” Studied jazzers from the very beginning.
The phrasing and dynamics of Dias' solo on "II" is pure genius.
Your Gold Teeth 11 is like the smoothed Steely Dan track and you could listen to this laying in a field watching the clouds go by.
What a sweet comment; thank you for your kindness and support! 💕 Lex
You are right there are traits of Santana in this song i didn't connect to it. I am glad i came across your videos.❤
We’re going to Portland, OR in May! Steely Dan and Snarky Puppy!
I love the shirts! You should check out King of the World or Through With Buzz
Scott A
11 Tracks of Whack
Book Of Liars most of the album really 👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks again guys. Amazing record. Fyi, my favorite dan song of all time is Bad Sneakers. Would love for you to cover it!
what a great band they were, what a great.... no need for any more words!
Donald’s vocal phrasing is just untouchable, really brilliant, maybe his best. ❤️❤️
