      Me too. I met this guy named Tim in high school Spanish class in 75, and we became best friends. When we would hang out at his house, he would sneak records from his older brother's room. Katy Lied was the first Steely Dan album I heard, and I've been a fan of the Dan ever since. I've got goosebumps watching this video. I've listened to the albums so often that when one of their songs is on the radio, when it ends, I expect the next song on the album to start. In fact, while watching this video, at the end of Bad Sneakers my brain went automatically to Rose Darling.

      It has reached the point that, when friends ride in my car, they ask, "Do you have any Steely Dan?" I always have a few CD's loaded... Yes, that makes me old school. I don't care, as my car has a 13 speaker, 600 watt sound system. Which translates into, just the right amount of the Dan.

      @johndoh5182 Год назад +1

      Jeff walked out during a session for one of the songs that the drumming was best suited with a shuffle, and Jeff didn't know how to play a shuffle at that time, which is strange because he toured with Steely Dan before they made Katy Lied.
      He told them to find another drummer to play the song and they told him NO. Learn to play a shuffle and then they'll record the song. Talk about a twist of fate. And that's probably the nicest Donald and Walter were to musicians, but he was still very young and I think they felt like they should take him under their wing a little with some tough love.

      @@johndoh5182 Almost correct. It was the track " Your Gold Teeth II". On this track, drummer Jeff Porcaro had a lot of trouble laying down the drum part. Instead bringing in another drummer, Donald loaned Jeff a Charles Mingus album with Dannie Richmond drumming to help him achieve the be-bop drumming groove he was looking for. Dannie Richmond drummed for Charlie Mingus and was one of the best Be-Bop/Post Bop drummers in recent American Jazz history.

    Bad Sneakers is a great song, but Doctor Wu is brilliant on SO many levels!
    The lyrical wordplay is just amazing. Is it a love song, or a drug song?
    Is it a song about being addicted to someONE, or is it about being addicted to someTHING?
    Is the answer “yes” to all of the above?
    Either way this song makes me cry, especially that line about “I was on the other side of no tomorrow” because whether it’s drugs or love, either can make you feel like you’re dying.

  • @steelyd2
    @steelyd2 2 года назад +13

    Donald is such an underrated singer. The way he blends with McDonald is so great. When he sings “I feel like I’m sooo alone” has so much emotion for a famously unemotional singer. Becker plays that languid guitar solo on bad sneakers. One of my favorite solos of his and again, filled with emotion. That might be one of their only emotional songs along with “any world” which is also on this record. And then of course what can you say about Dr wu. A love dope triangle about that dang heroin.

  • @jamesbrown9130

    Sometimes we all get overwhelmed by the musicianship and musical elegance of SD. Dr Wu reminds me also about the wonderful poetry of these lyrics. Nostalgic, cynically modern, beat influenced and so sing along ready.

  • @Skylarking00
    @Skylarking00 2 года назад +48

    Dr. Wu is definitely one of the Dan’s more atmospheric and cinematic songs that like good cinema, immediately transports you right into the song/movie. Lyrically, it’s an interesting plot line as well. It’s about a hopeless heroin addict - the song’s narrator - probably a Vietnam vet, perhaps now in Florida where “Biscayne Bay” is referenced. “Just when I spent the last piastre I could borrow”…the piastre was the currency used in French Indochina which included Vietnam up until the 1950s. Katy is a metaphor for heroin that is “lovely and sly” but that ultimately “lies.” Dr. Wu is the narrator’s dealer who initially helps him (“You walked in and my life began again”) but whom he can now no longer depend. Dr. Wu has succumbed to Katy as well. The chorus reiterates this. (“Has she finally got to you, are you with me Dr…”). They’ve only performed this a few times live. One is on RUclips. Donald has said he doesn’t like the way it sounds on stage.

      You know a lot about this particular song! Perhaps you know what song the narrator was referring to when he said: "We sang that stupid song all night long, but we knew every word was true."
      Your input would be most appreciated! Thank you!

    • @stanleymasterson1135

      The song is actually loosely about Walter Becker and his drug addiction which almost destroyed Steely Dan, and which was treated by a Chinese doctor from DC named Dr Wu.

      @Skylarking00 Год назад +1

      @@jacksonmorganfroghin4815 IMO, the "stupid song" they sing together and know is "true" is another metaphor being used. In this case, the stupid song refers to the pleasures and dangerous seductive powers of heroin.

      Personally, I think Dr. Wu is the person’s alter ego to his drug addiction persona. Katy is his rehab counselor & counselors were or are usually prior addicts. Interesting about the piastra as Viet currency & he IS in FL. Fagan wrote about drug addiction, drug dealers, street life, homelessness, prostitution, alternative sexuality, etc. but was actually a suburban kid from a well to do upbringing & went to Bard College Annandale on Hudson where he met Becker.

Katy Lied showcased how much Walter's and Donald's music was changing and becoming more complex and decidedly more jazzy, and set the stage for what was to come. For example, I think the vibe and pacing of 'Throw Back the Little Ones," as well as the pieces you just heard, later bloomed into "Aja."

    I really enjoy your channel particularly Steely Dan material. Lexie I had the same feeling as you about Dr Wu and it took me years to realise it is the dynamics that creates the atmosphere on this track .With the laid back groove of the bass and piano, the amazing sax break and the slightly sinister lyrics adding to the depth of the song. Interesting to hear you link between Dr Wu and Year of the Cat. Keep doing what you are doing both of you I think it is great. Thanks from John in Blidworth near Nottingham, England

    Congratulations on reaching 40K. I'm not surprised, You have a great channel. Two great songs, both short and snappy. Following the impact of their first 2 really strong albums, Katy Lied is one of their shortest and clocks in at 35 minutes so all the songs are under 3 minutes. Their previous album Pretzel Logic was only 33 minutes long. It was an experimental time for them, '74-'75. They were exploring different genres particularly with Pretzel Logic but keeping things really disciplined. Keeping the songs brief. Subsequently they found that unique crossover jazz sound with The Royal Scam that would somewhat define them for the rest of their career.

    You can definitely hear foreshadowings of Aja on Katy Lied: the sax solo over drum breaks, the harmonic voicing of the vocals. What a fine body of work. And this music was playing on FM radio in my high school days, right alongside Zappa, and Led Zeppelin. How cool is that?

    40k and Steely Dan! 🎈 Congrats on both! 🥂 And thanks 😊. Always a better day after watching your reaction to Steely Dan. Maybe familiarize yourself with some of the band members on the Northeast Corridor Tour last year. You won’t have a young Donald (but a more cynical 🤨 one); you won’t have Walter 😞; probably no appearance by Michael McDonald (that would be amazing) … but you (probably) DO have Jon Herrington, Freddie Washington, Keith Carlock, a great horn section and great backing vocals, etc. And Donald’s been known to give a mix from several albums (including his Nightfly) or has also just done an entire album. Great reaction! ✨😉

      And like others have pointed out: Katy Lied was released March 1975. Year of the Cat was later - July 1976. No shade.
      And I was going to include some Michael McDonald on a marathon request. I’d start with the pop hits, “Minute By Minute” and “Taking It to the Streets.” Then there’s more to hit for Michael and the Doobie Brothers (with and without Michael). I think Katy Lied is the first album to include Michael’s soaring vocals. Good spotting. These songs will also grow on you. #NicknLexRequest -
      Someone pointed out two classics to hit: “Reelin’ In the Years” and “My Old School.” And since you have the T-shirt, “Any Major Dude” and although it’s repetitive, “ShowBiz Kids” mentions “wearing Steely Dan T-shirts.”
      Pretzel Logic still has some gems (“Night By Night,” Charlie Freak,” etc.). And Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go will eventually be hit, along with the live and solo efforts. You’ve hit most of my favorites but there’s some fun left. ✨🤪 (edit includes: #NicknLexRequests)

    AND the drummer, a new kid on the block named Jeff Porcaro who already played on a few albums AND toured with Steely Dan before they made this album.
    I forget which song it is on the album but the drum style is a shuffle, Jeff didn't like playing shuffles and got frustrated during the session and walked out. They talked to him that night I believe and he said they should find another drummer to do that song because he can't do shuffles, and they basically TOLD him he was going to play the song and get on the drum kit and figure out how to play a shuffle and they'll record it after that. This is probably the nicest Walter and Donald were to what would be called a studio musician (at this point). There was one song on the album Jeff didn't do. But he learned to play the shuffle, that's what makes the song Babylon Sister sounds so great because it's a shuffle, and probably the best known Jeff Porcaro shuffle is on the song Rosanna by Toto. But that song moves so fast for a shuffle that typically only experienced drummers know what they're hearing.

    The Great Phil Woods did the Sax solo on Dr. Wu (He's a deep dive)!
    This was the first album where they were transitioning to the Session players instead of a regular "Group" lineup. The album only had two drummers and two bassists. For Drums it featured session legend Hal Blaine on his only appearance with Dan and a young 20 year old Jeff Porcaro who played on all the other cuts.
    Bass featured veteran player Chuck Rainey and Crusaders (and Wrecking Crew member) Wilton Felder who (unfortunately) are not listed as to which songs each played on.
    It was also the album with the first appearance of Larry Carlton (Daddy Don't Live in That New York City No More).
    Carlton & Porcaro had been playing at a club in North Hollywood called Donte's and I got to see them playing there with Robben Ford and Robert "Pop's" Popwell when they weren't gigging in studios or on tour. I wouldn't be surprised if Becker & Fagen didn't drop in to see them play of an evening.

Back in the 70's I was not into jazz or any sort of "fusion" music. My love of the Dan grew slowly over time. Back then I had a lousy music system that could not take advantage of their music stylings. There is so much nuance in their music that never made it out of the cheap speakers that I had back then. Listening to "Dr. Wu" today is completely different. I sounds so much better today. Thanks for reacting to the Dan. Take care.
