I bought roughly a lifetime supply of beans at $1 per pound, rice at $.50, pasta at $1, ramen at $.20 per pack, rolled oats were increasing… not sure of prices I paid. I am retired - inflation is a big concern to me. Look at hyperinflation in other countries, literally starving the population.
So did i in 2019 to about end of 2022!!!!! Havnt bought beans ,rice, pasta, or mash potato flakes in years!!!!! 5gal mylared buckets!!!! Also plenty of keystone meats and pressure canned meats and mountain house freeze dried meats.. Could make do if i couldnt leave the house anymore. N lolol plenty of toilet paper!!!!!! I definitely order #10 cans of staples (by the case) from the LDS online store. They will sell to anybody - no need to be a member of their church. The prices are reasonable and the shipping is only $3 for whatever you are buying. Great value! And they just added strawberries!! 🍓🍓🍓
I've been Prepping for decades. I have a team of close net friends that will be here on the farm when SHTF. I have no less than 48 cans of Chili, as well as many cans of vegetables, meats, fruits, etc. Retired and still Prepping. Keep Prepping my friends.
Heard a report that Walmart is planning on no longer carrying the large bags of things like beans and rice. One comment online said a shopper asked a store manager when they couldn’t find some large bags and were told about the plan to discontinue. Unbelievable that Spam was behind a locked cabinet, shoplifting is really going to cause more stores to close due to the lost sales.
When canned chili shot up in price, I started canning my own. I can the chili without beans in quart jars and the beans in pint jars. I just combine them when we want chili and they turn out great.
I find the best prices for rice at Sams Club. But need to renew my membership 🫣 I found 2 10lb bags of Jasmine rice on the clearance aisle for $3.50 though 🙌🙌 (Update: forgot to mention found the rice at Walmart. They have clearance items in out area now. )
Our potato farmers in South Africa, had heavy frost on their crops. Potatoes' price from now to December, will be unaffordable. Thanks for your videos, AG! I watch them before watching other channels. Warm greetings from South Africa
Thanks so much for sharing what it happening in your area of the world. Can you buy instant mashed potatoes, or dried shredded potatoes for hash browns?
Thanks, AG. Prices are crazy. I have been a prepper for many years and have quite a few of the long term foods in my pantry. I am so thankful. Happy Labor Day to you and yours. Teddy, too.
Incredible they’re locking up Spam. Wow! We’ve seen a sharp increase in food items here in Washington State. Next ground beef sale I’m going to stock up at our local Fred Meyer. Still prepping but so deeply concerned. We have family members truly struggling. Stick together with family and friends. Happy Labor Day AG and everyone. 🇺🇸
Sam's Club had Spam on sale last week. It was down $2.35 a can, pack of 8. We grabbed a pack. Hard to beat that price. Also, last week i realized that Same Club has dry beans under a dollar a pound, but you have to have them shipped to your home. Shipping is free for some membership levels.
Yes and it is sad that canned Wolf Brand chili doesn't have as much meat as it once did. I now have to add a pint on ground meat that I canned. So it is worth canning your own. (I still like the taste of Wolf Brand, i just wish they would beef it up!)
Great topic as these concerns affect us all! I am finding that my salary does not extend as far as it used to. I used to be able to buy canned foods for: ”10 for $10”. I no longer see this so I have had to change my shopping habits. Im pretty much buying all my daily needs from the Dollar Tree and my long term items from the LDS online shop. My one example of something that shocked me: The price of a bag of chips. Chips used to be so cheap. I now prepare popcorn at home, but I miss having a bag of chips on the kitchen counter.
I'm older, so ALL prices now panic me.😵💫 i took care of my Mother (who lived with me for 5 yrs til she passed) and I remember telling her cabbage was 75 cents a head & she was in shock & now it's more like that a pound & the cabbages are so tiny now, I'm scared to trim any outer layer bc it's not much there. I've noticed many things coming in, let's call it travel size but it's food & we have some of the best & finest land & farmer in the world. We got to grow a little something to supplement our budgets. Please do go to the stores for a reference to how your area is in stock. I've heard you have less than 3 days of shelf supply in your stores, so don't be caught with the mad dash or mad people. When it happens, shut your gate & door til it's safer.
Yes. I totally do not get that. It was always bigger=less unit price. This bothers me. It’s like discouraging you from getting more? I’ve been thinking that one over for quite awhile. 🇺🇸
Our dollar tree is now $1.50-$1.75 in my part of Colorado. It’s insane for a pound of rice and beans or pasta. Becuase at my Walmart a pound is over $3
Instead of buying some cans of chili with beans at a price you consider to be way too high, why not cook a big pot of homemade chili and then pressure can it in pint jars or quart jars? You can make a lot of chili bean stew at low cost using dried beans, the cheapest kind of ground beef, chili powder, dried onion flakes, beef bouillon and some canned diced tomatoes. Or use your favorite chili recipe that has game meat if you hunt deer or elk or moose. And the homemade chili will not have all those chemical preservatives, too much salt or all those strange flavor enhancers. If you are willing to invest the time cooking from scratch, you can save significant money. In our household, when we buy processed microwave meals or snack foods or premade desserts, we usually buy them from Costco, Sams Club, Trader Joe's or WinCo. This way we either get a bulk buy discount or a low mark-up or get items made with better quality ingredients compared to similar items at Wal-Mart or the dollar stores.
I hav at least 7 qts each of about 15 different kinds of beans pressure canned so i can make pretty much whatever i want pretty quick since bean cooking takes so much time cookin. I do big batches once in a while!!!!
I went to Winn Dixie this morning and bought sale items ... 80% ground beef $3.99/#, Wolf Angus no beans chili ( 2/$4), media crema ($1.99), Post granola BOGO ($4.99), grape tomatoes 2/$5, (1 pint). corn $.25/ear. A few other things, but mostly sale items. There seemed to be plenty of beans, rice and pasta. I didn't check prices because I didn't need any. I'm going to another local store tomorrow to get some sales there.
Hi from North Idaho. You're correct about everything going higher everywhere, and Wal-Mart isn't the cheapest any longer. That can of eggs made me suck all of the air out of the room. Even with the crazy prize of a freeze dryer, I'm seriously considering purchasing one. We have a small garden, and the availability other fresh fruits and vegetables that we could freeze dry. This would bolster our pantry supply to go along with all of our canned goods. Have a great rest of the year and stay safe.
Your locked display case of Spam made me laugh. I don't think it is that bad here, but I always just do pick-up to avoid going in the store, so it could be.
Here where I live in Colorado prices are outrageous. I used to have a $20 a week budget sometime for Twice a week now I am spending $40-50 a week now. Most my canned food is coming from the dollar tree
People really need to do math and figure out what is cheapest because they are being tricked everywhere. Most people assume that if they buy more or a bigger container, they are getting a better deal but it's not always true. For example, I will see an item that is 50 cents a bag if you buy it individually but $11 for a box of 10. Things like that. It's really important to calculate the price per ounce or the unit price.
Don’t don’t know if you heard about veterinary secrets, he’s a retired veterinary dr with lots of knowledge, just putting it out there, have a great day. ❤

Also the 5doz box of walmart eggs over 33.00 due to the culling of millions of layers in Colo.
Alaska Granny, I really need your help. I purchased dry red lentils and chickpeas thinking they would last forever. But now I heard that even the bagged red lentils (masoor dal) and the plastic jarred dry chickpeas (chana) go bad after 1-2 years. I think what upsets me most is I purchased these from an Indian grocery store and found some of the jars expired 2 years ago (2 years after their mgr date) and the red lentils had no mfgr date or expiration date. Not sure what to do. PLEASE HELP!!!!
I store dry lentils and chickpeas long term, just like other dried beans. They should be good to eat unless you notice Strange odor: Fresh dry lentils should have a mild earthy smell. If they have a musty or rancid odor, it’s best to discard them. Mold or discoloration: Check for any signs of mold or discoloration, which can indicate spoilage. Healthy dry lentils should have a uniform color and texture. Pest infestation: If you notice any insects or pests in the lentils, it’s a clear sign that they’re no longer safe to eat.
AG you have access to fresh fish, crab, and a plethora of delicious seafood. I was wondering if you eat it? I plan to visit Alaska to see the wildlife.

To answer your question: there are items too numerous to list that are no longer available and the prices have gone up by 25, 30, and even 50% on everything. A dozen Walmart eggs suddenly shot up from $1.77 to (today) $3.77! Breads are $3 to $4 and more a loaf. Two pounds of white rice are $1.77. Milk is $4.43 a gallon. So far all varieties of the one pound pkg of Great Value pastas are .98 cents. So still a good storage buy. A 28 ounce can of Great Value baked beans is $1.94. Great Value old fashioned oats are $3.98 for the 42 ounce cannister. 4 pounds of Great Value sugar is $3.14. 5 pounds of Great Value all-purpose unbleached flour is $2.43. A pound of Great Value butter is $4.26. A 12 ounce can of SPAM is $3.98. I still prefer the GV brand of reduced sodium canned "spam". It's $2 a 12 ounce can.
