TRUMPF punching and punch laser processing: How integrated flattening works

    An innovative process opens up new opportunities for sheet metal punching with TruPunch and TruMatic machines. The integrated flattening function allows you to produce flat sheets during the first work cycle. Compressive and tensile stresses, which otherwise serve to deform the sheets, are compensated during the punching process. A second work cycle is thus not required. Watch the video to see the benefits of this function for yourself.

    Wish I had those bottom dies 6 years ago!! Our programmers were having us use a "cluster" punch on parts with several hundred to over a thousand holes per part. Curl on the sheet metal was unreal. I called Trumpf support and they had me use a "stand alone" punch with about a .003 shim and the presser foot. Basically the same thing here, but with the standard bottom die. What a world of difference!!!

    I just feel like this is pinackle of human engineering, in a way. Something so simple, yet so complex. These machines are so versatile and can do so much. Great engineers at work. I am sure there are drawbacks to this process, but still. Cool.

      One drawback that I see is the problem to regrind the dies. The bulged surface is needed for the effect, but if you grind down 0,2 mm you interfere with that and the sheets won't come out flat any more. The conventional dies can be sharpened several times. This can't without losing the properties.

      @@jackmclane1826 I wonder if this problem could be solved by making the hole a replaceable insert similar to the multitool dies.

    This method began over 75 years ago in the Metal Stamping Industry. Over the decades the Sheet Metal Industry has copied much of what has been established years before.
    Advanced tool steel, Premire Die making, lubricants, etc. This method can also be applied
    for Punching machines that use STRIPPIT & Amada style tooling. The draw back is no sharpening allowed. In a Stamping plant, the tools can be sharpened due to proper
    grinding methods, and machinery. Remember this was another industry’s idea years ago!

    I put die in a lathe and create aprox dome needed then sharpen die to geta flat surface about 3mm around the cutting edge. Using size 1 die i had to grind the die adapter surface down a small amount. Works fine with pressure foot and standered stripper plate and reduced stripper pressure

    Looks like a great principle/idea for reducing warping - but how do you sharpen a curved die?

      With a curved sharpener of course!

      Hallo, sehr gerne erklären wir Ihnen das: die Matrizen lassen sich um 1 mm nachschleifen. Unsere Standardmatrizen sind zu diesem Zweck mit der Easy Use Skala ausgestattet. Hier wird angezeigt, wie viel die Matrize schon abgeschliffen wurde. Im Normalfall schleift man pro Schleifgang 0,1 mm weg. Dazu verwendet man unser Nachschleifgerät Quick Sharp, welches Sie bei uns kaufen können. Wir hoffen, damit konnten wir Ihnen weiterhelfen. :-) Viele Grüße, das TRUMPF Team

      Dear Prashant Kulkarni,our punching machines can perforate sheets up to 8 mm, sometimes less, depending on
      the hole diameter. Our laser machines, however, can cut holes into much thicker

    Do you have special grinding machine to maintain the curve after grinding the die?

      Thank you for your question!
      Unfortunately, dies can not be resharpened, as regrinding will change the geometrical relationships between the die and the wiper and thus the results. In addition, the regrind creates a sharp edge on the die, which leads to clear marks on the underside of the sheet metal.
