Fifty years later and this one still cracks me up. Good work making the connection to other bands with their Indian gurus. And yes, the "solo" is hilarious!
Great rock band from the 70's-80's. They had lots of hit songs such as "Sylvia's Mother", "Only Sixteen", "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman", "Sharing The Night Together", "A Little Bit More", "Better Love Next Time", "Sexy Eyes" etc. "The Cover Of Rolling Stone" is such a fun song. They finally did get on the cover of the magazine in 1973 in caricature.
It's 51 1/2 years, but we're not counting anymore. And, I'm glad I'm not the only one still singing along. I still have the "Sloppy Seconds" CD in my van and play it with the windows open, cranked to 11, toolin' down the road, at age 67.
One of the greatest sing-along songs from the 70s ever, along with Jeremiah was a bullfrog by Three Dog Night and so forth.. That is the music of my barely early childhood and it's funny because I've played music and bands and done stuff my whole life, and I think back, and this was just such a fascinating song as a kid like in second grade or something.
It was a drawing of them but close enough for the band. Members of the band showed up at the Rolling Stone headquarters to buy five copies for their mothers
This could be your path to novelty songs. If you go that way, there's much for you to experience for the first time. After this song the very funny "Junk Food Junkie" mentions lots of familiar names of snack foods and at least one health food guru.
I can't believe this was released over 50 years ago (in 1973) - damm but I'm old . . . I even remember when Rolling Stone was relevant! Regardless, I still get a laugh out of this song. Thanks for playing it & your comments.
A few years before the band's formation, Ray Sawyer lost his right eye in a car accident; Sawyer wore an eyepatch that made him resemble the Peter Pan villain Captain Hook, which served as the inspiration for the Dr. Hook moniker
The owner swore he wouldn't ever put there picture on the cover They put out this song it went viral So the magazine basically had to do something That's why it's a drawing not a picture
Back when this came out, a bunch of knuckleheads, including yours truly, were able to sing every part of this, phonorealistically. Wonder if others witnessed this phenomenon.
Loved Dr.Hook & The Medicine Show back in the 70’s!! We all could sing the words to their sing a long type songs🥰 My fav is ‘Sylvia’s Mother’ & ‘When You’re In Love With a Beautiful Woman’ is another. Loved your reaction to Cover of The Rolling Stone 😎😆❣️☮️💜
Saw these guys at a Day on the Green concert at our local football stadium in 1973. Always liked this song and it worked for them cause that year Rolling Stone magazine put them on the cover. Their other big hit was Sylvia's Mother. They were a lot of fun live.
Hey,..why cant we see the video?? I knew these guys. I miss Ray very much . They were all such adorable and funny nut cases. (said with love) They took me with them to Vegas and back to Reno. Then the floods came and Ray blamed me for the flood water. LOL!
What's their name lol, were just a fun group to listen to and had some pretty good songs. When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman has a nice groove to it, but their biggest hit Silvia's Mother is autobiographical, songwriter being Silverstein.
This was back when Rolling Stone Magazine was at least somewhat relevant. Since then it's gotten totally political. If they don't like your politics or viewpoint good luck getting a favorable mention or any mention.
Dr Hook was the best live Concert i ever went to and I saw all the Top Groups Live! They were great musically, but did not take themselves that seriously. Do not know who was higher on Drugs, the Crowd or the Band themselves....Love " I Got High and I Missed It".. and " Everyone's Making it But Me" long live Dr Hook ( unfortunately Ray Sawyer passed away a few years ago...)
Rolling Stone started as a zero-budget hippie paper but became very influential in shaping the "counterculture" , especially the music. Their album reviews could make or break a band. They were very biased in favor of west coast bands like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. I think they looked down on Dr Hook because they weren't "serious". They forgot that our music was supposed to be fun. "Oh, that's BEAUTIFUL.." still makes me LMAO
There’s a couple of different versions of the Statler brothers, doing their song counting flowers on the wall. I think the original was from the mid 60s and then they re-recorded it sometime around 1973.
Please check out their song called Yodel. It was not one of their biggest hits, but I promise you have never seen anything like it and I know you will love it.
A friend of mine just bought a new Rolling Stones issue just today at the airport in Minneapolis. He paid $12.99 for it. It was the size of a People Magazine. I used to subscribe for a whole year which was, I believe about $15 for the whole year , plus it came out bi-monthly compared to once a month now...yikes 😮
Ah, back when they were a real rock & roll band. This is the good stuff. This one, the last one, and the rest of the songs on that Sloppy Seconds album were written by Shel Silverstein.
Shawn, great stuff. Suggest: ...."It's hard to be humble" by Mac Davis...."No no song" by Ringo Starr....." Apeman" by Kinks......" King Tut" by Steve Martin( the actor) Realize I am picking some you have done already, try not to, but do not always check first, sorry man. Great channel.
Some may say this is a novelty song, but I highly disagree with that, and love it. Before they got so political, Rolling Stone was such a great magazine, and being on the cover was a true honor. I subscribed to it for years. If you haven't seen it, check out the movie "Almost Famous" which includes this song and an over-all great soundtrack.
Check out "Come on, Carrie" and "Queen of the Silver Dollar" and for a real twist try "Making it Natural", "Freakin at the Freakers Ball" or "Everybody's Making it Big But Me". Best to listen to those last three on your own before putting them on your channel.🇨🇦🇨🇦
The whole thing is a parody of rock and roll and Rolling Stone. Thepictu re of their faces was a take off of Queen. The Beatles really did have an Indian Guru and one famous rocker had an affair with their wardrobe seamstress while on tour. (I forget which one.) Like the father driving some headbanger's limo. Led Zeppelin was well=known for abusing a 14=year=old groupie in Seattle and cocaine was everywhere. Jann Wenner, who still runs the magazine, used the famous rockers to build his brand and did not like the Dr. Hook parody.
Back in the day if your band made the cover generally meant your a big deal and making it in the music business **Now of course it just become a shallow rag sheet To bad
Eventually, Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show DID get their picture, as a drawing, on the cover of the Rolling Stone.
Them getting their picture on the cover was a direct result of this song's success and happened right after this song hit the charts.
Making it on the cover of The Rolling Stone meant you made it. Brings back memories of my teens
Fifty years later and this one still cracks me up. Good work making the connection to other bands with their Indian gurus. And yes, the "solo" is hilarious!
Shel Silverstein wrote this and other songs they did. He is a great poet and children's books author as well )
It seems that somebody forgot to take the trash out ...
Beat me to it. LOL
The Giving Tree is a great book! My first sister-in-law dated Shel Silverstein.
loved reading his books to my kids!
Definitely check out “Sylvia’s Mother”. Very cool song
OH! I love all those songs! And another one,.."I got stoned and I missed it". XD
Fun fact this song landed them on the cover of the rolling stone
When rock stars get too full of themselves, this song will put them back in their place with the rest of us.
Omg......after 50 years I can still remember and (unfortunately for my neighbours) sing aloud all the lyrics. :-)
It's 51 1/2 years, but we're not counting anymore. And, I'm glad I'm not the only one still singing along. I still have the "Sloppy Seconds" CD in my van and play it with the windows open, cranked to 11, toolin' down the road, at age 67.
@@odonovan I do the exact same thing in my vehicle.......... I call it "therapy". 😁
Back when Rolling Stone was the top misic magazine. Been a long time.
I used to like the Rolling Stone magazine. Now at 75 years old, I don't recognize any of the music or bands they feature! Now I know I'm old!😆
I'm 66 and remember hearing this as a teenager. Love it.
The Muppet Show Band " Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem" were modeled on these guys.
Dr.Hook is such a fun band,with a great sound.
Man Dr Hook has slow stuff, Sylvia's Mother, songs that will blow your mind, Freakin at the Freakers Ball, Get my Rocks off.....dude they're UHMAZING
This is the band who had a song called "You Make My Pants Want To Get Up and Dance"
This one of those songs that when it would play on the radio or a juke box had everyone singing along with it.
This is actually a great tune😅😅😅 even though it is funny
"we got all the friends that money can buy..".... lol spitting truth there🤪
I think after this song, they finally did get their picture on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. This was such a great song.
And the streak by Ray Stevens😊
I can't believe this was released over 50 years ago (in 1973) - damm but I'm old . . . I even remember when Rolling Stone was relevant! Regardless, I still get a laugh out of this song. Thanks for playing it & your comments.
The joy on your face watching this video is contagious young man! 💙✌🏼👵🏼
that performance was broadcast from coast to coast; and it got the attention of the RollingStone Magazine...they made it!
About six months after this was released, Dennis, Billy and Ray indeed got their caricatures on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine!
4:30 - That meant he HIRED his dad to drive his limo, because he was too selfish to support him in his old age, even with all his money.
'Baby Makes Them Blue Jeans Talk'
You'll love it.
When he says "that's beautiful"..............it still cracks me up after all this time ..... LOL
A few years before the band's formation, Ray Sawyer lost his right eye in a car accident; Sawyer wore an eyepatch that made him resemble the Peter Pan villain Captain Hook, which served as the inspiration for the Dr. Hook moniker
Great song and you know this is old when people thought Rolling Stone was a good magazine LOL!!!
So glad you did this video version! Such good times! 🤠
Too bad we couldn't watch it. 😂
The owner swore he wouldn't ever put there picture on the cover
They put out this song it went viral
So the magazine basically had to do something
That's why it's a drawing not a picture
Back when this came out, a bunch of knuckleheads, including yours truly, were able to sing every part of this, phonorealistically. Wonder if others witnessed this phenomenon.
Dennis Locorriere is their usual lead vocalist. Pronounced Low-core-ee-air. Ray Sawyer (Eye-patch) sings lead on this one.
Great full reaction!
One of their best! R.I.P. Ray
This was my first concert. I was 12!

You should eventually watch the movie Almost Famous.

So fun! Love this song!!😂
This album (in cassette form) was the centre of our grade 10 Banff trip …. So many memories!
One of the first 45's i ever bought.Still have it.
The Rolling Stone Magazine is totally separate from the band ( Rolling Stones) .
This was back when Rolling Stone Magazine was at least somewhat relevant. Since then it's gotten totally political. If they don't like your politics or viewpoint good luck getting a favorable mention or any mention.
Love the shout out this song gets in "Almost Famous" 🙂
In my top 10 favorite songs!!
So many good and fun songs!! We knew every one of the lyrics to them all!! More, please!!
I remember this song, so cool👍👏👏👏💙
Dr Hook was the best live Concert i ever went to and I saw all the Top Groups Live! They were great musically, but did not take themselves that seriously. Do not know who was higher on Drugs, the Crowd or the Band themselves....Love " I Got High and I Missed It".. and " Everyone's Making it But Me" long live Dr Hook ( unfortunately Ray Sawyer passed away a few years ago...)

Mission accomplished - not too long after this song charted they did indeed make it to the cover of The Rolling Stone....
Fun song & great reaction! 😀
Oh! You'd love ."I got stoned and I missed it". XD
Great song ❤️ 🎵🎶
So many great songs from these guys!
Great reaction Sean! You hit the nail right on the head. I'm glad you could enjoy the satire.
Loved Dr. Hook queen of the silver dollar was my favorite, i also liked got stoned and I missed it
The Muppets rock band Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem took that name in homage to Dr Hook. I have never seen that verified, but we all knew it.
So glad you have the live video!
Fun song!
There’s a couple of different versions of the Statler brothers, doing their song counting flowers on the wall. I think the original was from the mid 60s and then they re-recorded it sometime around 1973.
Super cool song here love you
Love Dr Hook
Yay!! I love them!! Saw them in concert!!
How cool was that guitar solo 😂
SUCH a fun song!!
I like this song, it's hilarious.
😂😂🎶🎶🎶👍
Please check out their song called Yodel. It was not one of their biggest hits, but I promise you have never seen anything like it and I know you will love it.
YAY! finally... this is one of my favorite songs and I was always wondering what you might think of it
They were great! More!!
Love these guys. My favorite of theirs is Love You A Little Bit More.
For a good laugh give a listen to their track "Freaker's Ball"
Probably titled Flowers On the Wall
MAKING IT NATURAL IS FUNNY AND A GREAT SONG BY DR. HOOK.
Ah, back when they were a real rock & roll band. This is the good stuff. This one, the last one, and the rest of the songs on that Sloppy Seconds album were written by Shel Silverstein.
Shawn, great stuff. Suggest: ...."It's hard to be humble" by Mac Davis...."No no song" by Ringo Starr....." Apeman" by Kinks......" King Tut" by Steve Martin( the actor)
Realize I am picking some you have done already, try not to, but do not always check first, sorry man. Great channel.
Try their song 'Millionaire'
Some may say this is a novelty song, but I highly disagree with that, and love it. Before they got so political, Rolling Stone was such a great magazine, and being on the cover was a true honor. I subscribed to it for years. If you haven't seen it, check out the movie "Almost Famous" which includes this song and an over-all great soundtrack.
I Got Stoned and I Missed It...
Check out Freaking At The Freakers Ball
Check out "Come on, Carrie" and "Queen of the Silver Dollar" and for a real twist try "Making it Natural", "Freakin at the Freakers Ball" or "Everybody's Making it Big But Me". Best to listen to those last three on your own before putting them on your channel.🇨🇦🇨🇦
I don't mind the filtered video. Just wanna see that big old smile.✌
Listen to making it natural now that fun
This was banned on BBC because brand names were not allowed
Red wing-ed blackbird. Levitate. You make my Pants wanna get up and dance. Let the Loose end drag. I'M a millionaire. So muh fun.
I was looking forward to watching the video not just listening to it disappointing.
You are missing new “warning”..songs …Dr hook is great too
No band had more fun on stage.
Please get your Post straight: This song is not about "the Rolling Stones" (Mick Jagger's band), but about the Rolling Stone, a well-known magazine.
✌🏼🫶🏼🤘🏼
Rolling Stone, not stones. La ment. Expression of sorrow. One laments... la ment
I'm partial to 'Freakers' Ball' by Dr. Hook. Ha! Very funny song, but NOT for the PC crowd!
Back in the day if your band made the cover generally meant your a big deal and making it in the music business
**Now of course it just become a shallow rag sheet To bad
I love how deliberately bad that guitar solo was
Way passed stoned...lol
