Wow, thanks for reviewing our game! Brandon and I had a lot of fun making it with obvious inspiration from the real world of vintage computer collecting which you know all too well! When I first showed my wife the wife character in the game I wasn't sure how she'd take it, but all she said was "why is she a blonde?" My wife's a brunette :)

Oh, if only I had the room for more old computers....When I saw the "side of the road" part it reminded me of how some people will throw away their old computers, and local scrappers will grab them and strip the wires and case off so they can make maybe a buck or so.
When I am on my walks I'll keep an eye out for these because I can usually restore them and, if I can't use it myself I'll sell it at nominal cost (much cheaper than the used computer guys though). Hell, I've found a 2009 HP quad-core tossed because it had been in a house fire and, because it had some soot on the case the owners thought it wasn't worth saving.
I took it, cleaned it out and off, then used the restore partition to put it back to it's new-computer state. It's now in my refurbbed arcade cab.

In my husband's case, I didn't worry about his Doctor Who toy collection because I had my ethnic dolls. And my stamps. And my Soviet bloc book collection. And... Not all wives are collection widows (though sadly I'm an actual widow).
Also I can relate about rain. I left one of my 40-50 year old dolls on the windowsill during the summer while it was warm enough to have the window open. I came home to the ink on the painted faces running because it had rained unexpectedly and got to the doll.
I moved them to the inside sideboard rather than the windowsill and they are safe and dry. As a vintage collector I know things won't necessarily be in mint condition, but I'm damned if I'm going to be the one who damages them.

Thanks for reviewing this game. The existence of this game made me really happy.
Also I respect your collection VERY much, since I'm a collector myself.
Seeing all those little clips of your computer & game collection feels awesome.

I'm with you; collecting vintage computers is fun.. and addicting. Right now I have a Commodore 64, Vic-20, Apple //e, and Macintosh Classic, and I'm trying to get my hands on an Atari 800. All of those were obtained in the past few months alone.
For some reason I find it fascinating to learn about each one, their history, specs, software and accessories. Plus they have some great games (C64 especially) that I've never even known about until now.

Now that is my kinda of game. Its nice to see something different like this. I wouldn't mind seeing this expanded on in the future. Maybe a Thrift level or game where you have to drive to and from different thrift stores, fight off the crowds in the stores to get as many computer games and computer parts as you can find before the time runs out. Kind of a "LGR Thrifts: The Game" is the best way I can describe it.

I'm not sure whats worse, not having met the old apple when they revolutionised computers and try to give value for money, or seeing them fall from that grace to a company that makes overpriced devices for hipsters, hypocrite activists, spoiled brats and attention seekers?

you can have good build quality on a PC and though I can agree than the OS is optimised, that comes at the cost of expandability and cost, also I can't see how 5k resolution can be of any meaningful use.

    I have this problem.
A variation of it anyway. I only care about pre-built computers when it comes to Macintosh, because they didn't come any other way.
Aside from my Mac Plus and G3 Outrigger, all of my retro computers are scratch built with no OEM parts. So of course none of them work properly. :) That's the way computers are meant to (somewhat) work!

Thanks for the review, pretty simple, but this game is kinda cool, but I'd like to see something bigger, going around a city, trying to build the best collection of games, wither retro, or more modern, but that's just me, having different locations, thrift stores, maybe pawn shops for more recent systems, garage sales for a lil' bit of both, and flea markets for mainly older systems and games, also online stores for buying online, nut they may arrive broken, or the seller could be scamming, I like the idea of balancing play time, work, and maybe add family issues, but that might be too much...

I'm new to Apple II and I've been seeing these games in color but also I've seen Apple II computers that are only black and green? are these later models and not the original Apple II? I get confused cause for instance the game Wavy Navy says it's for Apple II (it doesn't say if it's II plus or IIe or anything) but when I look it up I just see the black and green one…

    • @LGR
      @LGR  8 лет назад +3

All Apple II computers had color graphics. The only thing that differs is the display you use, so if you use a green display you'll see green monochrome, and if you have a color one you'll see the full color graphics.

    • @Dorelaxen
      @Dorelaxen 9 лет назад +17

Do you have any idea how hard some of those are to come by, not to mention ALL the bullshit you have to go through simply to get them to work? Power up steppers, down steppers, converters, importing monitors with the proper refresh rate, not to mention getting your hands on the actual hardware. You'd literally have to be rich to afford all the crap that comes with collecting computers outside of the States.

      Because emulation.
Also fuck that shit, I'm not paying out the ass for an X68000 that I'd have to spend even more money to get running. Then you have to deal with maintenance on a system whose only available replacement parts are other USED AGED and OLD parts.
Collecting and collectors baffle me. I recall owning a Turbografx 16, tons of addons, and about 40 Hucards at one point plus maybe 3 CD games. Sold all that years ago when I realized I could just emulate it all and get my hands on all them fine curvaceous Japanese import cd images.

On another note: since you've reviewed Silpheed and Zeliard on Tandy and DOS, why not both of Game Arts' Thexder games from Sierra? If you want more localized Japanese PC games, there's also Murder Club and Babylon from Kyodai, the former a detective adventure and the latter a Metroid-esque CRPG.
Re: collecting Japanese computers, limiting the models you buy to simply Japan won't solve problems of shipping, cost, sellers' descriptions not matching what you receive, maintenance, different PSU specs, &c. And really playing these games the way their developers intended (at either a 15 or 21 kHz refresh rate) requires a CRT monitor! None of this includes costs for software and peripherals. I'd prefer that Clint show off a variety of machines 8- and 16-bit, ranging from something like a Sord M5 to a PC-9821, but getting it all together will take a while; do some coverage with your MSX in the meantime!

Seeing the (clichés about the) people the game is referencing, the woman should be "your mom" instead of "your wife", or at least it should give you the choice at the beginning. ;)

Hey, I'm looking to get my first retro computer. You seem like a good person to ask, how should I go about that?

I'm really liking your channel and I've been watching it for some time now, but I've always wondered how/what you use to capture these old screens?

Various capture cards, in this case it was an Avermedia TV tuner card.

Lazy Game Reviews is the color bleeding a part of the game?

Gary Beebe Yes it is, as was the case with all Apple II games via composite video output!

Lazy Game Reviews Right, so it's not "written" to look that way, It's the hardware that does that, and you captured it in your video?

What if I like my computers to have dat yellowing?
Do all computer recycling centers really sell(or whatever) retro computers? I am considering getting in to it and may have to find where to go for that in kc.

Nice! They should make a Nintendo game like that and such only about console game collecting.

Do you have any DEC minicomputers, like a PDP-8, PDP-11, and/or VAX?
Not really a home computer by any stretch of the term, but they are very nice machines.
DEC also made "normal" microcomputers, but most of them were a bit... ehh. (VT-180; cute little CP/M machine crammed into a VT-100 terminal chassis... that cost way too damn much.)

Have you considered asking the classic computer mailing list(s) if anyone has one they'd be willing to part with (or lend for a video)?
As to actually getting a DEC mini, that really depends on what you're interested in doing with the machine. There are quite a few games hanging around for the PDP-11 and the VAX (anyone up for some Adventure or Super Star Trek?), but really the main draw to a PDP-11 or VAX would be the historic interest (the '11 is where UNIX came to fruition, and VAX is where BSD grew up).
As an aside, have you heard of the classic computer mailing lists? You might find them rather interesting, they talk about all sorts of stuff, be it micros, minis, mainframes, home computers...

I was lucky enough to buy a box with 3 ZX spectrums in, trouble is my modern TV won't tune in properly on there channels :-(
Any how the game looks epic, I keep meaning to make a console wars RPG where you use consoles as weapons...literally. I might make that for the Spectrum and Mega CD since its so easy to distribute and play them on legit hardware
