The crack head you see in the gas station yes, protects you from falling debris like if you have a ceiling fan and it comes crashing down at least it will hit the table you are under. And even tho they teach people to be calm in these situations you get a fight or flight response most people freeze and before they know it all they can do is scramble.

The best places to be during an earthquake:
Out in the open with little to no tall objects around
Under a table or sturdy object
Next to a coin pusher or key master arcade machine

Nah actually under a table is the WORST place to be. Go to a fucking corner, take a long table place it standing against that corner and UNDER that table is where you are supposed to be, i think its called something of the life triangle or some shit like that. But being in a normal under-the-desk position will just fucking squash you if the roof falls on you.
@@bjrales Thing is that it is meant to be used in small buildings being under a sturdy surface will protect you from falling debris and possibly glass that breaks.
I have been taught earthquake drills all my life, and usually you are told if you cannot immediately leave the building look for shelter under a table or something similar the point is to avoid lamps, bits of roof, etc. That might break during the earthquake itself, afterwards you are meant to evacuate if you are able to.
Also immediately extinguish any open flames you have.

I think the school kids, and the restaurant, and even the coaster would be the scariest. School kids because they have no idea what’s going on. Restaurant because the lights shut down and everyone’s in a big panic, things clattering and glass possibly breaking. And the coaster, even if they’re made to shut down immediately and hold up, it still must be pretty freaky being stranded like that.

I lived in Taiwan for about 2 and a half years. Its in the ring of fire, so we got earthquakes every week. First time I felt it, I was terrified. Just the sound of glasses linking together and things on your wall swaying and the ground moving mDly beneath you...
I was so traumatised every time I went to bed or laid down and hallucinated the ground shaking (majority of the earthquakes happened at night). Once I thought I was just hallucinating when the shaking got worse and then I realised it was real. It's funny what your brain can do. Once I calmed down after hallucinating I'd realise that it was just my heart beating, and that my body had become hypersensitive to even minute vibrations. So yeah, I had weird earthquake hallucination episodes in Taiwan. Not fun.
edit: for anyone wondering, I'm in Australia now and my brain knows earthquakes don't happen here so I don't get hallucinations. But when someone shakes a table or the chair I'm sitting on, I panic for a bit.

I was born and raised in Southern California. I was pretty used to earthquakes, they didn’t really bother me - UNTIL June 28, 1992. Two different major quakes (I call the “twin quakes”), hit that morning, just a few hours apart. I don’t know why - even all these years later - but I felt like it was my first experience with an earthquake and I was terrified. Terrified that another one would happen at any moment. I would shower in my swimming suit, just in case.
I had always had the motto “California girl, now & forever”. By the end of September - just a few months after that terrifying day, my husband, kids & I were living in Idaho. I get so scared every time I go back to visit my family. I don’t know why these had the effect on me that they did. Just watching this video, gave me anxiety.
