    Do the owners actually enjoy these cars, or do they trailer them in, unload, put ropes around them, people say. GEE WHAT A NICE CAR YOU HAVE...WIN AN AWARD. Down come the ropes, back in trailer, in the garage they go.

    Nope, it isn't. "Driving his single-seat roadster along a straight desert road, Mix apparently ignored warnings that a bridge was out on a shallow gully and was fatally crushed by a heavy suitcase that flew off the rear shelf of his car." Source is the history channel, just search for Tom Mix fatal accident.

    This is my favorite RUclips channel by far. It's one of my only ways to see glimpses of automotive history. I may only be 22, but I have been in love with classic cars since I was a child which is ironic because my late father sold brand new cars and he we never much of a car man either.

    Its interesting the gentleman with the white hat who owned the yellow car that talked about Tom Mix with Jay. Tom Mix was also present at Wyatt Earps funeral. In fact at the end of the movie Tombstone this was discussed by the narrator. who I believe was Robert Mitchum. Robert Mitchum told the audience when Wyatt Earp passed away that at the funeral were several motion picture stars. He named a few including Tom Mix. The last thing he said was "Tom Mix wept." So apparently they were pretty good friends.

    Ok, did a bit more research & found this very car. The born rich website does a history on this car. They say it is the car he died in. On the other hand I found variations in the account of the accident. Like you said,one account says it was a single seat car. Another account says it flipped & was seriously damaged. (that account varies on lots of things so I dont trust it) The born rich site seems to have done lots of research so I am leaning toward believing them in this being the death car

    Not every car, American or otherwise, handled poorly in the 1960s. In fact the "golden age" of sports cars and motorsports was generally in the 1960s, and the cars built reflected that in some way. But remember American cars extolled upgrade and modification, to contain costs. So the cars weren't the greatest off the lot. But Detroit still gave a flip in the 1960s, but that all started to take a header by the 1970s and hit rock bottom, by the very early 1980s.

  • @shananagans5
    @shananagans5 11 лет назад

    I was thinking that but they didn't mention it. Seems like a little detail you wouldn't leave out. Seems unlikely he would have 2 the same year. I am thinking it's probably the same car but not positive. If a star dies in a car,that's a pretty significant part of that cars history. I wish the owner had of addressed it either way.

    According to Wiki, he died in his 37 Cord 812 Phaeton. Even though they didn't say it in this video, it's heavily implied by other sources that this is the car. How many 37 cord Phaetons could the guy have owned? 1+1=2

      On October 12, 1940, Tom Mix was driving north toward Phoenix on U.S. Highway 80 in his 1937 Cord 812 Phaeton. He stopped at the Oracle Junction Inn, a gambling and drinking establishment and then continued toward Phoenix. South of Florence, Mix came upon construction barriers at a bridge. Unable to stop in time, he swerved then overturned into a gully. A suitcase setting on the package shelf behind his head shot forward, broke his neck killing him.

    It depends on the model steam car. Most took half an hour of boiling the water, and even after you drove off they didn't hit their max capacity for another 30 minutes. The very last steamcar ever made could take-off in as little as 5 minutes.
    Watch Jay's other videos to see the startup in action

    Jay Leno's Garage should be a TV show.
    I'd watch it.
    There's a very well resoursed and vocal anti-car crowd out there. (If it was up to them they'd ban you from driving and then make you get travel papers for even using a bicycle !)
    But just look at the vehicles in this video. The human-experience would be poorer without them. Long live the freedom to travel, and in this kind of style.
