As a parent, I'm okay with that. Parents should be responsible for their inaction when it comes to protecting their children and others. How can you ignore your child when they come to you for mental help? Kids don't want to talk to their parents, so when they do, we need to listen. Dad could have easily stated that he'd take his son with him while he drove. But no, being away from his son was more important than making sure the kid was okay. Had dad or mom given more context to the counselor's concerns, they absolutely would have demanded he be taken home or called CPS.
These prosecutors have dont a great job! I like this defense attorney better than the attorney Mom had but she can’t really defend this father and the father knows it!
The drawing with the picture of the gun(they gave him four days ago) doesn't send out a red flag that maybe they better go home and secure the gun? I realize that they did not know he had the guns in his back pack. They knew he could walk home and gain access to the gun they just gave him. The fact that they knew it was their son right after the shooting shows they were aware that something reasonable foreseen could happen. Yet they don't take the few minutes it would have taken to do this.
@@violatrujillo and the teachers and counsellors didn’t see that as an immediate concern either (who are trained in mental health and safety). Very important evidence
@@brbrknndy that doesn’t prove it it was foreseeable. James didn’t know 100% it was their son. James strongly suspected/knew after the gun and bullets were missing which makes sense
The father basically put the gun in his sons hands...he bought the gun for a minor child, that makes him responsible for what the son did. The son also had full access to the gun anytime henwanted. The school warned the parents that the son had issues and they ignored them... makes them guilty!!
How was Ethan charged as an ADULT and then adults are being held accountable also?!?!? Ethan also had a hobby of going to the shooting range! That would explain looking for bullets online! He wasnt looking up serial killers!!!!! Because he wanted 2 boxes of bullets they should have known he was going to hurt someone? I easily shoot 400 rounds at the shooting range if not more! Americans have the right to bear arms and keep them in their homes! If they only read his journal!?!?!? OKAY lady! This is ridiculous! Im so sorry for the victims parents but the school is who I would be after for letting the kid stay in school afyer 2 incidents!!! My daughter is 14 and goes shooting with us! Yes we teach her safety and responsibility. We keep our guns locked up! But she picked out the gun she wanted, that she uses at the range. The school found him looking up bullets! Why wasnt he suspended??? Not allowed back until he recieved help? Then I would look at the parents if help wasnt given! But Nooooo a state run school would never be held accountable would they!?!?
Most states have a cut off age for charging a juvenile as an adult. Michigan has ruled that 14 and under cannot be charged as an adult, no matter what. 15 and up will depend on the severity of the crime. Juvenile detention: juveniles 14 and under can be held in juvi until 21 years of age, because they prefer not to transfer a child guilty of a juvenile crime (or minor felony) into an adult prison after they turn 18. They have studies of juveniles responding to treatment better than adults (lower recidivism rates for juveniles). When a juvenile is charged as an adults, SOMETIMES they go to juvi, otherwise they go to a protected area of the prison like the shooter, and don't get released into general population until 18. With him they decided he would do more harm than good by being around his peers. Someone decided the shooter should get more than 6 years, but let's be real -- the severity of his crime was undeniably brutal and premeditated, of course he was charged as an adult. You used to be able to sentence juveniles charged as an adult to life in prison. I think it was 2013 when they passed a law to allow for parole hearings after 25 years served. They did the Miller Hearing for the shooter to waive his rights to parole. The difference sounds like you're a responsible gun owner who probably teaches their daughter gun safety, etc. You probably lock up your guns. I would hope you're active in her life and aware when she acts out or needs extra support. His parents acted like they regretted having him, he was a burden, and they basically gave up on him as they spent all their time and money away from him, ignored his cries for help, and bought him a gun. I don't think every parent of a school shooter should be charged, but I do think it was right to bring his parents in. It's how they acted so nonchalant about everything, and then the evidence came forward and it was worse. If they had read his journal and done nothing, and that could be proven, they would be charged with second degree murder. Let's not forget there's a lot of pretrial arguments to get evidence withheld from a case, a lot of details were left out. Watch the Miller Trial for the shooter, you'll understand the level of neglect that kid received. You have an obligation to the well-being of your child and they failed him. Don't forget he already had access to two guns, the .22s, I think he found ways to manipulate them into buying the 9mm, but at the same time you're a parent, not your child's best friend, you have to know when to draw the line! People buy Internet modems that come with default username/password, and they know to change them to avoid network intrusion. His parents didn't even buy a safe big enough to store the new gun, and the safe they did have, which held the two .22s -- deadly weapons -- in a safe with the DEFAULT code that any kid could easily look up and try! Edit: Last March, a judge ruled that the school district could not be sued for the crime, that the only person in the building at the time of the shooting who could be held responsible was the shooter himself.
How should a school be held responsible? Yes, for general well fare while in their care, but the parents are the ones who should be with him the 17 or 16 hours he isn't in school and aware that he has been struggling mentally? OP, please, schools usually have one teacher per 120 kids. The school didn't have the whole story and the parents failed to inform them! Parents need to be responsible. These parents are deplorable and couldn't be bothered to interact with their child.
You completely excuse him looking up bullets when you’re talking about the parents but by the end of your comment you want him suspended and forced into mental health treatment by the school over him looking up bullets.
I couldn't vote guilty as of yet. If the burden of proof rests on the jury members safely presupposing that James should've interpreted the chance of his son committing a mass shooting as "reasonably foreseeable"... then that said, I'd like to go as far as perhaps even assuming that "reasonable" could be trsnslsyed to or is another word tp describe a "basic" understanding... such as a basic undestanding that if your going to throw a wadded up peice of garbage into the trash can from just a few feet away, then your "basically" expected to be able to successfully accurately throw the small debris in the disposal bend three out of three times without fault. And by contrast... as a jury member... I'd really like to see the prosecution lay out a foundation (if they didn't at anytime) of Ethan more specifically relating to the basis of himself suffering from violent tendencies or temptations of whatever nature... that is in order to assume that the Crumbley parents had "reasonable" or "basic" foreseeability thrown right at them. All kinds of children can mention mental issues to their parents such as suffering from depression, lack of concentration, lack of apetite, feelong anti-social, feeling lethargic, mood swings, etc. However, if by any chance there isn't a direct reference from Ethan to his parents regarding violence such as him telling his folks that he really wants to beat up another student at school who is a foe of his, than I can't interpret myself as assuming the Crumbley parents had a basic understanding (on top of all else...) that there son even committing a mass shooting was simply a matter of "reasonable foreseeability." It sounds like Ethan mentioned something to his father (wish I had better details) in reference to suffering from.mental issues, before his dad gave him some pills and told him to "suck it up." However, it doesn't seem safe to speculate that anything worse than depression was mentioned on Ethan's part... especially in the event that not much else is known about this discussion.... That said, do we even know if Ethan ever even refered to his mental issues to the extent of actual "anguish" or something similar.... However, James at least going out of his way to take the initiative to personally deliver some pain killers to Ethan... at least shows something of caring on his part as a father, despite the something of insensitive bluntness included alongside. And secondly, it also sounds like Ethan told his mom that he was seeing a demon and hearing voices. Once again though... nothing directly indicating the incitation of violence. Moreover, a child in puberty who is perhaps having something of a lack of steady-mindedness steming from mood swings or what not along with Ethan perhaps adjusting to having an expanded appetite (if not the largest one that he can remember at such an age)... then Jennifer could've reasonably considered the chances of hormonal changes and scenality being the biggest factors at hand, even if she should've ultimately been additionslly more open-minded than that.
And with it sounding like the prosecutor is perhaps implying that James knew that the gun was missing prior to him actually coming home and seeing for himself... it doesn't seem that the jury should hold this against Jame's character as a defendant, if he enabled 911 to wait an additional 15 or 20 mins to update them about his son's liklihood of being the Oxford High School shooter. That said, perhaps James first could've wanted to drive home and see about ALL of the guns (I'd like to say there was more than one firearm not locked away anyways...) and get ALL of the facts together before he decided to proactively inform 911. It was mentioned in Jennifer's trial that James had a lot more knowledge and responsibility (practically all as best recalled) in keeping up with these guns. And this update perhaps even obviously couldn't have spared anyone's life it would seem or from injury for that matter. If James waited an hour plus to inform, then perhaps that would be a different story, but as he mentioned... this situation was freaking him out and James probably wanted to pass such knowledge on to a 911 operator all at once instead of playing phone tag and filling in this information in a dragged-out peice by peice fashion.
It also seemed according to the timeline as recalled... that the prosecution is claiming that James had a duty to go see if all of his household firearms were secure upon realizing what Ethan had handed in to his teacher on paper. However, I'd like to say that an even bigger priority if anything... would've been for the school (if they didn't happen to fo so) to raid Ethan's back pack, locker and even have a strip search conducted. Perhaps even send him home for the day or so... as this school staff currently had a whole school full of people to look out for. As far as urgency is concerned.. that first over anuthingg else. However, that said and especially in any such event (good question still for me anyways) that this "school work" paper that Ethan handed in... had indicated the inciting of violence more excludively than everything that Ethan said and did inside of his household combined... then how much more negligent can this mass shooter's parents be considered over the Oxford School staff.... With all due respect, this tragic event could've perhaps been hard to see coming for everyone involved in this parent/teacher meeting, but the Crumbley parents appear to be even both crucially and isolatedly targeted for that matter, in order for responsibility to compromise for the unfortunate losses.
And when the prosecutor claims that insecurity is indicated on James's part when he doesn't go out of his way to express surprise that Ethan successfully found and stole a gun from the Crumbley parents bedroom... the prosecutor implying here that is,, that James at least subconciously knew ahead of time of this firearm not being sufficiently hidden safely ... then that said, ant surprise on Jame's part could potentially go without saying in this instance. Although the prosecutor perhaps has even made something of a point here... if this didn't require Ethan to open a door with a credit car, or hot wire a car, hack a computer account, etc., then there doesn't seem to be any real incentive for James to express disappointment in his efforts of safety prevention, if all that was required for Ethan to do was cross his parents trust barrier and become privacy invading snoop. That said,, there could've indeed been surprise on the part of James, but at which point personally announcing this as such wouldn't necesarily give him an opportunity to realize anything except failure.
Lastly, although the prosecutor didn't personally mention James's deleting of a photo off of his phone (it sounded like) as scandalous behaviour... of his son and gun or a gun itself of which Ethan would use... however, the prosecution may have happened to follow up somewhat shortly after in alleging something of questionable behaviour of another sort that is... (as best I can recall anyways). That said, regardless... it wouldn't necesarily be a surprise for James to not want to keep such a photo around, in order to reminisce over an item of which his son unfortunately used in a horrific mass murder. What's most important is that James came clean with 911 and investigators, which I'd like to say he did as far as I know.
Im watching court tv crumbley case. So let me understand this. They charge and convicted the kid as an adult. Then the mother is convicted for her child's crime. Now the father is going through the same ordeal. When will the trial began for the school officials and let's not forget clergy if the family was religious. Perhaps the other children who knew the kid should also be charged, and while we're at society in general certainly should be considered as well. Perhaps court tv should be included for broadcasting other events like this that bring unhealthy thoughts into young people. If you ask me, it was a tragic event, emotions shouldn't be any cause for justification. If that is so, then I myself should use that excuse. I was wrongly convicted for a crime I never committed. 7 years in prison. I could have come out with a chip on my shoulder, but I didn't. The people in this country are always looking for another reason not to blame themselves. In 1693, it was Witch, still goes on today. And I would like to know if that dipshit prosecutor knows what her child, if she has any or any other child is thinking right now. I know of other kids who committed suicide without any thought in the minds of those close to those kids of doing such a thing. My son had a friend, Shawn Ostafin if mandan north Dakota. This kid was at my home daily, his grandmother and uncle live across the street from me. This was a good kid, always helping, always respectful. One day he shoots his father and step mother. He is currently at james river correctional center in north Dakota. This country was built with firearms, other events like this have occurred. I believe this stupid charge against parents will escalate as other shootings are going to escalate. Kids pissed off at their parents will now have another way of getting back at parents for any excuse. So enjoy the ride. And see if what I said doesn't come to be. Don't forget I told you so.
