1) If there are going to be upgrades to the DAS system that are hardware upgrades, its likely that the US will receive them first, simply by the nature of it being the main producer of the system. Other nations will most likely slowly receive the upgrade as well, of course. 2) The combination of radar, the much larger IR camera on a swivel under the turret, and the DAS create a relatively high definition picture of the target. I am pretty sure theres a demonstration somewhere on youtube, Ill try to find it. But at that point, its up to the pilot to decide. Also disguising military equipment as medical/civilian while its a combatant its a warcrime. 3)No. DAS is a collection of IR cameras. To jam it, you would practically need to do the equivalent of pointing an IR flashlight at the plane, which would be really short range. And to do that, you would also need to find and track the aircraft. And it can also use the radar to detect ground targets. 4) It is not a complex system hardware wise, as it is just IR cameras. It is complex digitally, however. Digital bugs may occur, but fixes can be done quickly, to every single F-35 at once, instantly.
Look awesome and impresive, only I hope that the President and Congrees dont cut buget to this full F-35 program because then will be handicap and crap F-35. This F-35 advanse hight technology look awesome and impresive but I hope that the President or Congress dont reduce buget to this full program because then will be a handicap F-35 as was the measure to F-22 Helmet Raptor replacing the Hud display.
@atmodom 2:15, that's what happens. Also, 'flying cow' is an inaccurate description, in the September 2011 issue of Airforces Monthly they had this to say "... in terms of manoeuvrability the F-35 will be cleared to 50° angle of attack, similar to the F/A-18 Hornet, with a full load of munitions inside." Also, manoeuvrability may not be as important as you think it is, most modern air-to -air engagements tend to be at long range where the F-35's advanced systems make it lethal.
This is the reason why the F-35 is so expensive! so high tech for your money to carry! expensive gadgets always better than cheap ones! like cellphones!
I totally agree -- scrap the F-35 and install the Electro Optical Distributed Aperture System (DAS) on the FA-18E/F Super Hornet. The unfortunate F-35 is a complete lemon, and will, no doubt, go down as one of the greatest failures in aviation history. The F-35 began its development as the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) in 1992 -- Yes, 25 years ago!!! Yet Initial Operational Capability (IOC) has only very recently been declared in the USMC and USAF in very corrupt testing schemes. And Full Operational Capability (FOC) has not been attained by any service's F-35s, and won't be for quite some time. That means the F-35 remains not fully combat ready. It still has a laundry list of unresolved significant problems, yet over 200 F-35s have now rolled off the assembly lines. That means that all current, and many future F-35s will need extensive rework. At least the Navy has had the good sense to not embrace the F-35, and to purchase the failed aircraft in very limited numbers, as politically required. It is quite clear that the F-35 will be THE LAST aircraft that will be developed for all three flying branches (Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps), and the F-35 program is nothing short of being an albatross/white elephant, and complete waste, fraud, and abuse to United States' and participating countries' taxpayers.

The shoot back missile has half the range of a shoot forward missile because it is expending extra fuel turning in ways conventional missiles do not, so it would only scare off a pursuer who's lining up for a gun kill. This is why 99% of missile fighting is moving your airplane into a position where the missile you're firing has to do the least amount of turning to hit the enemy (has the best kinematics). Modern SAM can fire on the move and detect in bands the F-35 isn't stealthy in, so DAS is a bit useless in that respect. Not to mention DAS is something plenty of other aircraft have (Gripen etc), it's not some new invention. Also DAS and reverse firing missiles can be installed on a WWII prop bomber, if they were so powerful as to make turning useless, why even pay hundreds of millions for a jet airframe?
Too bad your information is hopelessly out of date. The BAE HMD is a backup that only addresses the jitter issues the VSI HMD had with night vision. The BAE HMD is on its way to being cancelled now that VSI has a grip on the jitter issues.
Izno Iznogoud, that's BS. Rafale OSF’s IRST was a disappointment. The OSF-IT omitted the IR channel altogether. Some Rafale F3s supposedly were even delivered without the OSF. OSF-IT has detection range of 85 km on a clear day. OSF-IT is use for identification not for IR tracking *ODF-IT will be cued by radar, Spectra*, or Link-16. The twin IR channels present in the Rafale F2's OSF will be absent from the OSF-IT. Otherwise, it would have been necessary to address the obsolescence and performance issues affecting the IR portion of the Rafale F2's OSF that are today entering service. To sum it up, the OSF-IT will make do with the TV sensor. This system will be an improvement over the current one (but without an increase in range, since this would have required changing the focal mechanisms), which can already be cued by radar, Spectra, or Link-16, thus allowing it to detect aircraft at 85km, to separately distinguish the multiple aircraft in a flight at around 40km, and even to detect a formation break before it is seen on radar, which provides an undeniable advantage. Nevertheless, the absence of the dual-channel IR will de facto prevent passive air to air combat at night." From Technologie & Armement supplement of the June 2007 Air Power:

There wasn't a lot of new tech here. This system isn't the only one that can provide over the shoulder shots at the enemy. I think SAAB can even do it with the Gripen. Plus i noticed one of the other fighter's was a SU27 and another a Euro fighter, so what your saying is no other country will be challenging with anything more than a fourth generation fighter jet in future? Plus all the SAM's were out in the open, a desert in one scene and a green empty field in another. I do not think their commander will be in charge for long.
A lot of this technology is old. The Russians created the helmet mounted HUD, the Apache Guardian helicopter has all the sensors, stealth is based around the F-22 and the voice activated stuff is SIRI. I believe the F-35 is failing because there are literally hundreds of different contractors and sub contractors around the world making the parts for these things so there is a lot of room for corruption.
+orlock20 This is a very naïve viewpoint. DAS ist completely different compared to a "basic" HUD. Yes - it all started with an HUD - but it is like saying, that the first IBM PC and a contemporary PC have the same capabilities - and while in theory they are - in reality they aren't! Your latter part of you analysis isn't an argument either. Yes - some of the delays and cost overruns happened due with it... but the whole program had to be restructured and since then made far better progress... and the F-35 is already fielded and deployed [even not with 100% of their final capabilities].

Hey! They haven't built missiles that can reach QUITE that distance while being portable!
@atmodom 2:15, that's what happens.
Also, 'flying cow' is an inaccurate description, in the September 2011 issue of Airforces Monthly they had this to say "... in terms of manoeuvrability the F-35 will be cleared to 50° angle of attack, similar to the F/A-18 Hornet, with a full load of munitions inside."
Also, manoeuvrability may not be as important as you think it is, most modern air-to -air engagements tend to be at long range where the F-35's advanced systems make it lethal.
Amazing 🤯

+Jane Geary F-35 can detect SAM's missile launch can enable F-35 to counter attack. DAS has missile tracking capability.

Rafale OSF’s IRST was a disappointment. The OSF-IT omitted the IR channel altogether. Some Rafale F3s supposedly were even delivered without the OSF. OSF-IT has detection range of 85 km on a clear day. OSF-IT is use for identification not for IR tracking
*ODF-IT will be cued by radar, Spectra*, or Link-16.
Nevertheless, the absence of the dual-channel IR will de facto prevent passive air to air combat at night."

Holy shit, I nearly choked on my carot I was eating. Nice !
That's why the NGAD is already being worked on. And besides, I have yet to see a true fifth gen built by the ruskis or chinese.
