When carrying and unloading a load such as this, it would be far better for the tailgate (lower part) to stay on the trailer to help guard the taillights from being damaged. I have only ever seen one manufacturer who has put a lot of effort in designing a rear tailgate that helps to avoid stones etc, from getting trapped in the gap and/or falling between the tailgate (aka tailboard) and the lights.
