Thank you, Graham. I recently acquired the ND 2-400 filter and have been very pleased with some long water exposures. I appreciate you touching on this subject, and the various scene adjustments.
Brilliant! I’ve been desperate to use long exposures and thought I couldn’t do them with this camera. You’re a life-saver! Haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere else.
Hi Graham, having set my fz80 to Artistic nightscape my shutter speed is still at 1 sec and by moving the top rear dial it only decreases that time, yet you say it automaticly sets at 30 seconds, am I doing something wrong
Hello Graham. I have noticed a few comments about increasing iso when making night sky photos. It seems it can't go higher than 80. Why is that? Is there a way to increase iso?
I just came inside from taking pictures of the great orion nebula and I get my gh3 on any ISO the camera offers. I set to manual mode. I notice this question is a year old. I suspect you can by now get your ISO up.
How are you changing to the shooting menu and getting shutter speed? I seem only to be getting the aperture control in night mode - am I not supposed to click the adjustment wheel or something? Hard to see in the video what your fingers are doing to bring up the shutter speed. You're definitely the best out there for tips on this camera though - Panasonic's documentation and support is awful!
Does anyone know how to switch between electronic and mechanical shutter? I can't seem to get the 60 second option even with SCN 15 selected... Never mind, I figured it out. For those who are having this problem click *menu/set, scroll down to *Custom, on page one there should be a silent mode. Turn it off and it will make the shutter type changeable. Go to *Rec, and on page 5 you will see the Shutter Type. Select MSHTR for mechanical and it will allow you to get up to that 60 seconds of exposure :D
Hi, I follow these steps on my lumix fz82, but it doesn’t do a countdown for a long exposure, it just takes a single photo still. Is there another step or setting i need to change beforehand? I’m very amateur, so any help would be amazing, thank you. Your other videos on the fz82 have been a great help, but I can’t get this to work.
Hi Graham, I am getting a Gloxy variable ND2-400 here in SA, but not a ND1,000 as it is not available here. Is it necessary to have them both, or will 1 be ok on it's own. Do they just stack on top of each other. I could get my Daughter to bring me one from London if required. Many thanks for all your Tutorials. I might have thrown the camera away had it not been for them :-)
Nice video and picture with the ND filter. Can you please add the exact ND filter you used ? I'm tried 2 different ND filter ND8 and ND16, and both can not stand more than 4 sec.. in daylight. btw, i'm using Panasonic lumix g85. Or maybe you can suggest me the best ND filter for my cam type.
You need the ND1000 (10 f-stop) for daylight suppression. I have a review coming of a very cheap but superb quality L-green 10 stop filter which surpasses even the Hoya Pro ND 10 stop
I got that brand of DN filter and it was good at the beginning and after a few weeks a line starting to appear in the middle of the photos, the best filter if anyone cares about quality are the Lee filters
Hi- love all your videos- just bought the FZ80 and take photos of fashion/vintage jewelry on a white background- whats the best video to help me with the correct settings for getting a bright white background under my lighting set up?
The bright white background will cause the camera to underexpose in most cases. Using any of the modes P/A/S us the +/- exposure compensation to correct it ( maybe +1EV as a starting point)
Muchas gracias por contestar y por el detalle de contestarme en español. Aprecio mucho tu esfuerzo y gracias a lo que me han enseñado tus videos acabo de encargar esta camara en amazon. Te has ganado un subscriptor. Un saludo.
Great video. Someone has an advice to help me ? I would like to shoot the star night, but it's impossible on the FZ82 to take a longue shot 30/60s and change Iso. An idea?
Hi there! How are you? I've been watching your videos to learn about my fz80 but I can't find a way to put it in 60 sec. Just 1 sec and that's it.. maybe my camera has something wrong? I've tryed in daylight and night but it's impossible to change the time of the exposure.. maybe something in the camera configuration is wrong? I would be grateful if you can help me here. Thanks!
Many thanks for this wonderfully articulated video. Like all your videos , this is of great value to those of us who own a FZ80. On the particular brand of ND filter you used on FZ80, is it "better , worse or indifferent" to instead use the Panasonic recommended ND Filter for FZ80 i.e. DMW-LND55 which FZ80 user manual says "reduces the amount of light to approximately 1/8th (equal to adjusting the aperture value 3 increments) without affecting the colour balance." I am an enthusiastic beginner and was planning to buy DMW-LND55 , DMW-LPL55 and DMW-LMCH55 for my FZ80 camera. Looking forward to your response.
The ND8 from Panasonic has not been available for a while now so it might be difficult location one. If you use Hoya or Tiffin then they are usually neutral colour. The ones sold in sets of three are usually poor optically and have colour shift.
Thank you for the quick response. I tried locating Hoya filter and found there are too many options. I am a bit lost on which exact ND filter to buy. Have zeroed in on "Hoya PROND 55mm ND-500 (2.7) 9 Stop ACCU-ND Neutral Density Filter". Will be great if you can advise if this is the correct ND filter for FZ80 that you would suggest. Earnestly looking forward to your guidance.
i have a fz80 and am trying to capture the night sky and aurora's. I can get my iso to 3200, fstop to 2.8 but the shutter speed shows as being 1/15. I cannot figure out what/how to change it , to me it only takes 1 15th of a second to take photo, which is far too quick to capture anything! any advice
Hi Graham, I have followed the video, which I think is great. I have a problem, as when I turn the dial, I do not get the aperture as shown on your screen. I just get the compensation. When I press the dial, it only shows me SS. and compensation. How do you get the 5.6 as shown in your video? My shots all come out white, meaning there is no shot? I would appreciate any help on this issue, thanks.
If your shots come out white it means they are over exposed. Make sure that you are on scene mode and FIRST spin the dial it will have Shutter Speed selected. the longer the SS the more light comes in so the whiter the image. so just turn down the SS
Hi, I recently bought this Lumix fz82 camera, but while filming I hear a strange noise in the camera, a kind of tingling, or fleas ... I transferred the filming to my laptop and it sounds much louder. How is your device behaving? Is there any noise during filming? But on film ...? Please help me with this problem. p.s. I didn't zoom, I filmed in the HOUSE! Thank you.
The noise that you are probably hearing is the optical image stabilsation device in the lens. As the microphones are so near they pick it up very easily. More noticeable indoors and when quiet.
Hi Graham I still have the earlier FZ72 model, but although there is no 'artistic nightscape' mode, it does have a 'Starry Night' mode in the Scene menu. This mode gives me 3 shutter speed settings of 15, 30 and 60 seconds respectively, how could I use this to get the same effects using nd filters as you did?
I guess in this mode being able to set the shutter speed to say 15 seconds by using a "variable" ND filter you could set an aperture in A mode and then vary the ND until the exposure was correct. A little trial and error should prove it.
graham, wouldn't it be a better idea to buy step up rings for each of your various cameras to fit 2 larger diameter nd or variable nd filters, which would stop vignetting, for example a 55mm to 72mm and use 72mm round filters, step up rings are only cheap, this allows combinations of different filters much the same as using cokin square filters stacked with the convenience of being able to rotate variable nd and polarisers and stop any chance of vignetting etc, also saves a lot of money when using various sizes of lens just buying one size filter to fit all lenses.
Yes I normally only use 72 or 78mm filters but I couldn't find my 55 to 72 and had to use a 55 to 58 and then 58 to 72 that's why I had the vignette . I just bought another set as they make a useful lens hood when stacked.
Thanks, as always, for your tutorials. In the attempts to capture the tree there seemed to be chromatic aberration. But in your final attempt, CA did not show. Was this due to the settings?
It wasn't the best time of day for recording this shot and the wind was blowing the tree branches which became blurred. In the opening shot (taken on another day) the wind was minimal so I was able to get a better result. The combination of the nd1000 and nd2-400 did cause a colour shift as well. The CA may be the result of the smaller branches moving in the wind
No idea what he is doing on the top of the camera. Things just change as if by magic. It would be nice to have a second camera watching his fingers on the buttons while he chats. Right now, no clue.
I recently purchased this camera and your video has been an amazing help! Thank you so much mate!

Thanks so much for these tutorials for FZ80/82 cameras. I'm learning so much. I hope you continue with more videos for this particular model!
Yes i will be doing a complete series for this camera
Great! Thanks.
Yo the exposure compensation tip killed me thank you so much
Thank you so much Graham, it's a nice video. Could you help me, is there any chance to change the ISO from 80 in artistic nightscape?

But can you take 60 sec exposures at higher ISO such as 3200?

Can you please advise on both night timelapse specifically the stars.
If the camera only allows you to do 1" exposure it's because you need to change the shutter mode from esthr to mshtr or auto.
Hi Graham! Do I need an adapter for this nd filter? On a Panasonic fz80? Or I can use a 55mm nd filter?
Thanks Graham, most helpful
