    I'm impressed. Best interurban train since the first V sets in 1977. The early version from 1970 was only a one off prototype that was substantially different inside and mechanically.

    @kcobley 3 года назад +2

    The timetable may be sped up on the Blue Mountains, the much better doors, slightly wider/corridors, cars will cut an average 40 seconds at stations over 19 stations, the train also has much better acceleration, higher top speed, improved hill climbing, improved braking and seriously better driver control.
    It's possible for the current 2hrs 2 minutes to be reduced to 1hr 45 minutes.

    • @lmlmd2714
      @lmlmd2714 3 года назад

      Hill climb ability will be good. I love the V sets (and my partner works on them, so there's sentimental value there) but the route as it stands is painfully slow, and the a/c on those units is just garbage. Boiling in summer and freezing in winter. It's stupid they didn't do a domestic build though - it just complicated matters and it cost a fortune to modify the BM line to accept the new stock. Surprised they bothered with the work beyond Mount Victoria.

    • @kcobley
      @kcobley 3 года назад

      @@lmlmd2714 the track modifications were fully completed within the few months closure due to bushfires, the full cost was less than $40M, but the conversion allows for all Sydney Trains rolling stock to be used on the Blue Mountains line, Oscars can now be used on the Blue Mountains line. The track modifications allow for much greater flexibility and compatibility from available rolling stock. The air-conditioning on the D sets is very powerful, the doors allow much faster entry and exit.

    Looks like the new “D” sets are going to be very cold on the Blue Mountains line in winter when those doors open.

    • @lmlmd2714
      @lmlmd2714 3 года назад +1

      Apparently it's going to be open-on-request only - unless someone pushes the open button, the doors stay closed. Guessing climate control was a big part of it, otherwise winter in the BM line and summer on the coast lines would both be pretty grim. Given the lower passenger loads in these lines compared to the city lines though, i'm not sure the jumbo doors are really needed. Provided they're wide enough for wheelchairs, that's enough, but these seem way oversized for the realistic passenger loadings. Compare it to trains in comparable routes in Europe and you can really see the difference. That extra space could have been used to make some extra tip-up seats or bike storage, or a VENDING MACHINE. We can be on these trains for 3 hours. Surely a vending machine is a no brainer for extra revenue and well fed and fully caffeinated passengers? Regional trains in Spain often have these and it's a *really* good idea, IMHO.

    • @ktipuss
      @ktipuss 3 года назад

      @@lmlmd2714 The new French intercity trains have vending machines, too.
      Why the wide doors? Because these trains are designed primarily to carry people to Intermediate suburban stations like Epping, Hornsby, Parramatta etc. That's why the non-reversible seats placed uncomfortably close together. Transport for NSW and the Liberal Government panders to "customers" in marginal Liberal seats . They leave the true intercity "customers" a distant second, because they mostly live in Labor-held seats.

    The Oscar will remain until all of the NIF D set deliveries are completed, it's also possible that by then traffic growth may require them to remain. Decision time is 3 years away.

    Even though the Tangara G sets were converted to T sets they still do peak hour services from Hornsby to Springwood & Penrith to Gosford & Wyong both operating via the North Shore (that’s if their still running, I haven’t seen since the Christmas holidays started) I doubt the NIF D Sets will see any service knowing 90% of the intercity fleet refuse to drive them & there has been are few petitions to stop testing because of safety concerns, what you might see is more H & T sets servicing Wyong, Gosford, Newcastle & Springwood, while the V sets service Lithgow, Kiama & Newcastle, there have been sightings of T sets operating on the T2, T3 & T8 lines including having the opportunity & surprise of getting T23 & T53 from Ashfield to the City 2 weeks ago & as time passes by you will probably see most or all of the K & C sets back in service (some of this is speculation but it would be great if the information was proven true).
    I’m kind of excited, I’m are trainspotter myself.

    Looks shiny, though I'd have liked it to be home-built like it's predecessor V sets, or Tangaras or all those beasts that served 40-50 plus years rather than these Chinese built craps

    • @aquamonkee

      The blue mountain tunnels were meant to be widened with the introduction of the Oscars but fell rampantly behind schedule the width of the D sets is in no way a design flaw as much as the media would like people to believe

      Would be good to know why local manufacturing can no longer handle building NSW trains with both previous providers now coupling with OS suppliers. That said I'm glad UGL is involved in the contract as Downers "additions" to Sydney's railways have been (pardon the pun) a trainwreck!

    I have to wonder why the D sets like the B sets have orange highlights while the rest of the fleet were either ordered with or retrofitted with yellow highlights. Is the government about to saddle the public with yet another expensive train makeover because I'd rather it was spent improving operations

  • @Dalts1985

    4’20 Mark you state I wonder 💭 what will happen to The H Set / OSCar Trains with introduction of The NIF...
    • The H Set / OSCar Trains will progressively be converted to Suburban Standard Sets (this means like the long distance Tangara G Set InterCity~variant {that The OSCars replaced} The OSCars as part of there handover to SYD Trains Fleet operation, will have the toilet removed & replaced with more seating...
    The 55 OSCar Sets on succession to SYD Trains will progressively replace the Stainless Steel A/C’d Silver C & K Set Trains which will progressively start being retired from 2023

    • @NiffyYT
      @NiffyYT 3 года назад

      When you said the H sets will replace the C and K sets, you’re wrong. It is actually the B sets that will replace the silver sets, the H sets are to ensure more capacity on the network.

    • @craigaungle2391
      @craigaungle2391 3 года назад

      Why have the toilets removed for ? The Oscar's once running in suburban services, would be very useful for longer trips in peak hours. To move passengers say from Central to MacArthur, Richmond to Berowra and other quite long suburban running trips. So the existing toilets should be left in these trains for the near future. A better and more sensible upgrade, would be to replace the seats with more comfort and back support. And to have proper footrests instead of having to apply some continuous pressure by a passengers feet to rest on.
