The way you had to stick your finger in there and wiggle it to push the top piece up is exactly what I thought of with this being a noodling puzzle. Sticking a hand into a crevice and wiggling a finger is how a noodler might tempt a catfish to strike.

I vote for the ring box puzzle first. Also, having your tools eaten by the puzzle is always worrying. Although, it does sound like a good idea for puzzle gimmick.
Not sure, but I made a chessboard 20-odd years ago that used lacewood for the light squares, and that looked very similar to the wood used in the Noodling Box.
I'll put a synthetic face on you to look like me and contact lenses to have the same eyes as me and finally synthetic fingerprints like Ethan Hunt from Mission Impossible so you can go to NASA to solve the puzzles there in their tests for astronaut candidates! 😁😅

The seam on that one pop out panel is visible, but only with the light at a particular angle, and the wood grain definitely helps camouflage it

I would like to think outside the 'box' next time. But this was very challenging. And I still don't know how the pins and mechanisms worked.
