hello Brian, Thanks for your concern, it healed up pretty good but don't have the flexibility I used to have. My Spider-Man skills are not the same but I'm glad to be walking and Super glad to be alive. It took a full year to recover from that fall. I've got screws and plates in my left foot now. I do things a lot more cautiously now when I'm up on any roof especially the 12/12s . Be safe and Thanks for asking,and the scoop on the cougar paws boots.

If you work for a company that cares you simply use a harness
These shoes work great. Bought them for my whole crew. BUT if you step on a loose shingle or lots of loose grit you can still slide. You also need to be careful not to put too much sideways pressure on them. The pad can roll off from the boot. Harness up on 2 story 6/12+ or 1 story 10/12+
In the olden days, before Cougar Paws, we'd make our own roofing shoes by gluing rebond carpet pad to the bottom of our boots or sneakers.

I never walk on a steep roof without roof jacks and boards. and to be real safe rope and harness. It only takes one time to ruin your career. tahoe tom.
I used to roof. Took me 45 mins every morning to get past the fear. After that I started feeling comfortable.
Great info on the boots. My Uncle built houses for decades and his 3 sons followed in his footsteps as a family business. Mind you they grew up helping their dad, took over the business and had been building for decades as well. One took a fall off a roof of a house they were building. Broke his back. That was the end of his construction career. He mostly recovered but his back was never the same, so he couldn't do the work. They too, never used safety gear, ridgehooks, harnesses, rope, etc. Once you start sliding, nothing to hang on to on a house you are building. Just my 2 cents worth. Your boots though are a good idea though.
I've never worn them myself, but Ive known a lot of guys who did and loved them. Only time I ever saw a problem with them was an adjuster on a 12/12 with me looking at hail damage. Not sure how he did it, but he turned his feet a bit and the pads peeled off. He took a face down slide about 25ft down the slope and only stopped by grabbing the gutter. He had a horrible case of road rash and was a foot from dropping 21ft to a sidewalk.

Another excellent video Brian, I'm just a regular homeowner, and I purchased my Cougar Paws because of this and all the videos I've seen you wear them on. I have some repairs I had to do on my roof and these shoes stick like glue on my 9/12 roof, but I couldn't imagine walking on a 12/12, that's amazing. I saw you on a 13.5 in another video, kudos man!
I’m a contractor abs have to walk roofs periodically. I have an arborist throw line/bag, an arborist safety rope, cam ascender, and body harness. It takes only 5 mins to set a rope over the roof and clip into it. Way better than a broken back which ive experienced before and was zero fun
Where do you put your anchor to The Ridge of the roof or do you tie it off to a tree on the other side? I have started washing groups and have been thinking about safety harnesses but want. an easy place to anchor I don't really feel like point up shingles on a peek and putting an anchor in.

It's not just about being safe but feeling safe. Being a painter, I sometimes have to go on roofs and I'm not afraid of heights but I'm afraid of being on a sloped roof even on a 3/12 I bring up my couch cushions. It's doesn't look too scary until you actually get on the thing. My first time was maybe a 5 or 6/12 slope and I was about to call the fire department because my legs were so shaky I had to sit down but since it was a one story I just jumped off. Now I put up ladder jacks everywhere, a harness tied off, 3 couch cushions, and I still get nervous.
As a roofer I hate tying off on anything less then a 8/12. But these safety guys are so up my ass lol.
I have a better chance slipping on my roap than I do falling off a roof.

You'll get more comfortable, but if you're that nervous, you should probably stay off the roofs. Most of it is mental thing, and if you let your head get to you, you will make costly mistakes. You can have a healthy level of respect for the danger, but you should have never jumped off
I just used my paws for the first time today and there amazing I haven't been in n the roofing industry long and being a bigger guy 6/5 230 I got a little different center of gravity than your normal skinny rubbery roofer and they give me the stability and confidence that I lack from the years of experience but I don't recommend the Cleats for tear offs it tears up the old felt and made it harder for my Guys to move around on the 10 12 we were on today and then I took them off and took a ride on some loose felt about thirty feet down the shingles we hadnt tore off yet and with no shirt on I'll have a mark to remind me of a valuable lesson but I finally cought my self and my cugar paws kept me from hitting the ground well good bless all u brothers out there we*re a rare breed

Yes, any shoes should be IN ADDITION to safety rope, etc.
No Doubt about it!
But there is always a certain time you have to rely on skills and shoes only especially when initially setting up safety equipment that's not there yet.

Having fell off a roof and becoming disabled, I know I should never have worked on a roof without a safety harness tie off system. I'll never work again because I was stupid.

Cougar paws are great our crew wears them on most roofs 8 pitch or steeper considering the fact that we don’t take too many safety measures it’s a great thing to have, one thing I will say is be careful how you step if you have something heavy in your hands like a shingle bag because the pads can roll out from under your foot happened to one of our guys where it partially rolled, he was able to just readjust and go tho, something like that could easily end bad tho

Paul Vaughan no problem anytime, thanks for watching! The cougar Paws definitely add to the safety, but do not guarantee your safety. If you get and use them just don't get too comfortable and think you can do anything with them.

Hey fellow roofers - maybe there’s another angle to all this? And it’s up to us to think ahead. I DEFINITELY value my Cougar Paws / cushions / Pitch Hoppers ( new toys!). But . . .
I’ve started up selling customers on allowing me to add permanent roof anchors strategically placed along ridges. I explain to them the safety aspects for themselves for maintenance issues/Christmas light installs, gutter guys, pressure wash guys , painter/carpenters working on dormers, Christmas light installers, etc. The next roofer!
Buy the two d-ring SS/zinc plated permanent anchors in bulk for pricing and the installs are less than 2 minutes each - shingle/ridge vent right over the top.
There are other versions that can be installed near / under items requiring more frequent or more involved maintenance. They allow work platforms to be attached and removed easily w/o compromising the roof integrity. Hopefully someone can add the name - or I’ll come back and edit.
*** EDIT*** Hitch Clip system - if it’s still around. Keyhole shaped clip in area for harnesses, but also has accessories like jack brackets and bunk brackets. If they’re still around.
Love my cougar paws, however, I can’t walk a 12/12 pitch with them. Of course I’m 57 and don’t have the balance I once did. Please be careful! Love your videos!
Thank you for showing. It is very dangerous to walk on the roof that steep. Best wishes to you. I climbed on my first and second floor’s roofs many times. I am a very old man now, no more climbing for me.
In my lifetime I fell three times, all three times I fell and landed on my back, I laid there still for over half an hour to an hour before I could moved myself up. Nobody around at those times. I know how it feel... just be careful. Your future still bright and it’s waiting for you.

35 or so years ago, as a teenager I almost fell off a roof, I lost balance, slipped & fell, & slid, my foot caught in gutter, pulled it a little away from the house, but that gutter stopped my fall. otherwise I would have fell about 3 stories, it was a 2 story home, but in back it was a walk out basement, so 3 stories in back, 2 in front, I did finish the job, but stopped doing roofing, but had worked for a friends dad several summers ding roofs, but that was my last one,
fast forward to today, my home is in need of a roof, it is also very steep compared to most roofs, but I cant afford to pay to put a new roof on, i'm just trying to figure out how to buy shingles, or metal, but scared to be on roof, the gravel on the shingles is loose, so extremely slippery I put asphalt around a leaky boot 8 or so years ago, but now my balance isnt as good as when I was younger, but trying to figure out how to do this myself, dont think these would help, but I cant afford to buy specialized tools either. I wish I had replaced it when I did the asphalting, and was more sure footed, but now it will have to be fixed within a year or two, or I will have major issues. house was 12 years old when I bought it, & I had it right at 25 years, so its time.
If you don’t feel comfortable, then by all means DON’T DO IT!! Nothing is worth getting severely injured or killed. If not fixed yet, you can call around, pick the roofer you like, explain your situation, and ask if they would accept maybe 3 or 4 payments. Someone will accept because most of the cost is their labor, not materials.
I really do appreciate you sharing your experience with this particular product. BUT, if you could make a "How to walk a steep roof" SAFELY video, that would be pretty awesome. I have been trying to find information on how to get on my roof SAFELY to get some things done up there (Home Owner, not a Profesional) like installing cameras or cleaning my Solar Panels. "I don't compromise safety".....but you're walking on a damp 12/12 roof not paying attention, holding a camera and zero fall protection. It's one thing to be doing it on a 6/12 or less, but on a damp 12/12 is just dumb. I have a high school friend that just fell off a small garage roof, messed him up real bad.
I agree! But I've been roofing for 35 years. I've seen several guys get killed in dumb or freak ways that could easily have been prevented. Using old worn safety rope, leaned back on it, snapped and fell 3 stories from a church roof. Guy on a flat awning over an entrance door, 9 ft off the ground, stepped off the edge and broke his neck. Guy setting safety railing on a commercial dorm building without wearing fall protection, walked backwards into a corner and fell 30ft to his death. And those were just 3 cases in one city over a 5 year period.

Never heard of them. Would you use your foam on wet steel roofs? The gradient is not that steep though.
If you trust your paws you will be fine I put Jack's at the very bottom and then leave the rest to my paws and I have yet to fall 11 years later.

I like cougar paws but I definitely would not just do cougar paws alone on anything above a 10/12 I had to jump off a 12/12 with cougs off a 14' eave. Made it ok some scratches but still just be safe and tie off if you can
Whenever we are doing a job we always use Jacks and boards, cushions, and harnesses if needed. On this particular day I just needed to caulk something, I wasn't going to put a Jack or harness in for that. I always encourage safety, the cougar paws are just an added step.
I know what you mean, I've taken a lot of roofs been on hundreds possibly thousands at this point and I've only used a harness a handful of time. Anyhow you walked on that 12/12 pretty smooth, I did a 10/12 today that felt about as steep as a 14/12.

Because I’ve heard a lot of roofers say they’re not good that they’re good for ppl who use them here and there kind of how u do just for a steep roof 10 mins maybe an hour or two for a repair.

8/12 np. Anything 10/12 or up you’re taking your chances. Especially on roofs with granular loss.

I'm cleaning gutters now and my lead wants me to get comfortable with walking steep pitched roofs with a harness, will these shoes give me that extra assurance that I need
I like the estimate Cougar paws. Those are more comfortable than the traditional cougar paws.

Yeah I was on a 8 and It was a 3 story apt and I was walking with a bundle and the pad rolled right off my boot needless to say I was scared shitless I was so glad there was a random cushion on the roof I turned around real quick and threw the bundle on it then I just kinda rested on the bundle till I could grand the pad

This was hard to watch! I am scared to death of heights! When he got on the roof that was really steep, it was even worse, because it is such a steep angle. Then, seeing his ankles turn sideways at a very awkward angle, that was terrible! I am a Medical Assistant. He will break his ankles like that!
So scuffing shingles is a thing? I've heard of scratching metal roofs. Wouldn't the shingles need to be replaced if something as soft as foam could damage it? Also how well does the cougar paw work with metal roofs?
Austral Opithecus yes scuffing is a thing, at least that's what we call it around here. It's typically when the conditions are right, hot day lot of sun and steeper pitch roofs. It's not caused by the padding. The weight of your body on a small surface area will mash the granules right out of the bitumen.
Any affected shingles do not look good, will not last near as long and should be replaced. We do our best to get done earlier before the heat of the day. If we do need to work in the hot part of the day we do our best to use Jacks and boards. The cougar Paws help spread your weight over a wider surface area with the cushion padding. As far as cougar paws on steel, typically the flatter stuff we don't need anything special to walk. Steeper stuff we Rack in and can use those boards to stand on.

It would not walk on my roof without Cougar Paw boots!! 1) For safety, and 2) because they easily pay for themselves by avoiding damage to the asphalt shingles. NOBODY wants to be seen on a roof in Nikes!

They definitely work good. You still have to have a little bit of confidence and be safe! One wrong move can cripple or kill you. In addition to other safety equipment they are definitely worth the money!
Would the cougar paws bottom sole ever flop around causing you to trip?
I've never had it flop around on me no. But I have seen and heard of some guys on the crew not make sure they were pushed in real well after changing them. Causing them to peel off unexpectedly. Just make sure the pads or replacement pads have got a good firm Bond before using them.
What's the black strap on top of your boots?
The black strap is supposed to be if you're putting a stack of shingles on your boot during the install, it wears out and not your laces.

Do they work on different types of underlayment?
Keith Zimmerman I only really use these when measuring a steep roof, repairing one, or Roofing it. I don't recall having any trouble on any synthetic papers. Although I have used them on putting down different types of ice and water, some of which are real slick and granular to walk on and had no trouble with these. Sometimes on the ice and water with lots of sand, I try to dust the sand out of the pad every now and then. With that said anything two stories I'm always extra safe with ropes or Jacks at the bottom.

harnesses, I just wanted to show the boots. When I'm going up for something simple or to measure a roof we are not contracted to do yet, I'm not going to nail a harness system into the roof. I am trying to re roof a little storage building with a metal roof. And I ended up buying the guardian bucket-o-safetie and ended up tie ing off to a tree and moving about the roof that way. It was really slick once all the metal was down, obviously. But I feel safer now at least with a tie off.
@@Checkthefineprint I appreciate the feedback! Have you got your project all done? If not there is a tool you can pick up to use with your ladder and simply play hopscotch while laying the panels. I plan on shooting a video on it just haven't had time to yet.
Last of my project...cuttin the gable trim to fit the eaves. Kinda of a corner angle cut. Wil use dremel tool and ladder for these last cuts. I’ll watch for your video and I’ll subscribe. Im an O R nurse , please stay safe.

Yes we get snow here in Central Indiana. They get sloppy and actually break down faster. I don't think they help any of the snow, it is still slick. What part of the country do you live in?

I don't recall having any trouble walking on the decking. As long as it is somewhat of a rough surface they grip it.
You can walk any pitch roof with cougar paws. Even if the boots were $500 I would buy them. Your be able to make back the money in no time

You can use them in the rain it just eats them up a lot quicker. So if it's not quite necessary to have them on for the pitch you're working on I would use something else to save their lifespan.

You should be able to find them at a roofing supply house near you. Not sure where you're from but Google search roofing supply. It should turn up some big names like beacon, ABC supply Co. Etc. They normally stock them.

Matt Jones yes they do still grip pretty good, unless you step on a pile of loose granules. I was just on a 2 story 8/12 pitch house yesterday for an estimate. The shingles looked old and had loose granules all over, so I put them on. I didn't have any trouble walking it.
is that flex seal on the toe of them?
no it's just a darker thicker reinforced strip so roof installers can carry shingles or let the shingles rest on them and not we're through.
