I love that this randomly appeared in my recommendations. The Bechstein is my personal favorite because I could hear the expression in your playing more clearly. I've always loved playing on Baldwin pianos in the past

Thank you so much for your feedback. What do you especially love about the Baldwins you've played? I believe that in the 1960's and 70's Baldwin produced lots of very beautiful pianos, probably more consistently beautiful than Steinways. It's a shame that the company then began to become less popular and eventually ceased production.

I agree, it's a shame what happened to the company. I played 3 different Baldwins and they all had this beautiful warm tone but didn't lack definition.

@@ziadthepianoman1367 Yes, I remember playing a couple of Baldwin concert grands many years ago that were extraordinary. Gorgeous tone. I wish they were still being produced.

What an interesting idea for a channel! And bravo for your playing! I'm a big Steinway fan, at least the D, B and A. But , for this piece , I find the more elegant silvery tone of the German to be better suited. And what good fortune to have a good B and a Bechstein in your home!

Thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback. I feel very much the way you do: I am particularly fond of the tone of a first-rate Steinway. The NY Steinways produced in the past few decades have been very inconsistent but I think nothing beats a GOOD NY Steinway - they have a warm, round, fat, bell-like tone that is EVEN better than the consistently wonderful Hamburg Steinways, in my opinion. But Bechsteins can be marvelous as well, in a different way, especially a well-restored vintage Bechstein. "Elegant, silvery tone" as you describe. I would add a "singing, sparkling" tone as well. I think both of my pianos are good examples of their respective brands and you are right that I have good fortune to own both of these pianos to be able to switch between the two. Also, as you indicate, I think that each piano is better suited to particular pieces/composers/genres. I never owned a top quality piano until a year and a half ago and now I own two of them. :)
Are you more familiar with the Hambug or NY Steinways? Have you tried both and do you have a preference?

@@JonathanGeffnerPianist Having grown up and trained in the US, I am most familiar with NY Steinways and Baldwins, though I knew Mason & Hamlin and overseas makers. I've lived nearly half my adult life in South America and Europe, so I've gotten to know the Hamburgers more. They're different, though when NY was going through hard times I played some truly dreadful examples, a problem I never had with the Germans.

@@tkmmusician Yes, I too have played some Steinway lemons. Living here in the US nearly my entire life - aside from two years in Hong Kong - I have never played a Hamburg Steinway to my knowledge. So, all those bad Steinways were NY Steinways. The inconsistency is astounding because as I mentioned, I think a GOOD NY Steinway is wonderful, but there are quite a lot of bad ones out there that have been produced in the past few decades.

I'd have to say Steinway though. But Bechstein has a lovely romantic light. But when you start with a romantic candle, it becomes one-dimensional in the end. But the darkness that exists in Steinway seeks a light, and this search, this yearning, is a quality in itself.

Very poetic description and I see what you are saying. Interesting way of looking at it.

You can hear so much more clarity in the left hand figures on the steinway.

    Nice playing, Sir!
I personally prefer the Steinway because it's a bit softer, whereas the Bechstein is a more bold sound!

Thank you very much for your feedback. Interesting because I believe that this Steinway is actually a louder instrument than this Bechstein, yet you are not the first person who has told me that the Bechstein sounds louder. I believe people get that impression because the Steinway has a rounder, warmer tone than the Bechstein, which is something I love about this Steinway - and Steinways generally. But I love the Bechstein tone as well in a different way - to me it has a singing, sparkling tone and it also has incredible overtones. It's always interesting for me to hear which one people prefer. I think it also depends on the particular piece or type of music I'm playing, because I believe that certain music comes across better on one or the other of these pianos.

Bechstein IV is my preference. Cleaner, less muddied sound. Capable of nuanced and expressive sound production. Apart from tonal qualities, the Bechstein is a work of art compared to that Steinway. Just look at that plate, music desk, finish of the case and its esthetic lines. It would grace any artist's home.
