I’d put this performance above Frankels 2000G win. The acceleration STS showed was breathtaking, and he never really got the full credit he deserved. It would have been a great race to see him take on Frankel over a mile. Over anything further than that, STS would have been clearly superior.
Hyperbole. Frankel beat better horses at a mile and a mile and a quarter. We never saw Frankel race over 12f but I’ve no doubt he’d have stayed, especially considering he’s a renowned source of stamina as a stallion. What baffles me about the STS / Frankel debate is we saw how good Frankel was with his winning distances. Sea the Stars only doing enough in every race he went in to? Really? Do you honestly believe Frankel only beats Mastercraftsman a length in the Juddmonte or Delegator a length in the Guineas? This is why Frankel has the higher rating and will be remembered as the superior racehorse as well as stallion…
When you consider STS interrupted passage through the race and that Mick Kinane eased up in the last 50 yards that alone probably costs STS at least two seconds and the ground had a bit of cut in it as it was declared "Good Ground" but STS still ran a time of 2:26.30 making this the 6th fastest time ever of the Arc. That tells you how good this performance was.
A lot of people have commented over the years that this wasn't a vintage Arc, but I would argue the top half of this field was at the very least, IMO. Among the top 10 finishers alone, 8 of the 10 were G1 winners in Europe and some of those went on to become G1 winners abroad as well. Sea The Stars, Youmzain, Cavalryman, Conduit, Dar Re Mi, Fame and Glory, Stacelita, & Vision D'Etat all fit into that criteria, and were all cracking good horses in their own right. I would add they were all among the very best middle distance turf horses in Europe during this period too.
@ASupremeOwl Tough call, but agreed. But christ, STS pulls Micks arms out for 11 furlongs in an Arc and still wins. Possibly the greatest performance ive ever seen.
Anything that could go wrong did go wrong for Sea The Stars in this race. Raced far too keen. Got shuffled back in the pack. Got hemmed in on the inside. But once they hit the straight he flew. After running so free he should have just run out of gas. Yet he produced a sustained burst of speed that killed them. He was SOME racehorse IMO. Up with Ribot, Seabird, Dancing Brave & Pientre Celebre as one of the great Arc winners.
You don't even see heavily odds-on favourites win races after racing with the choke out for that long. Every other horse had settled. It was an astonishing performance. Maybe not as aesthetically pleasing as some other Arcs, but STS was massively handicapped by being lit up and still put it to bed in a blink. You dont see it happen in a class 6 at Catterick, never mind a G1 over 12F.
Goonerville Gonad Yup. The casual watcher of horse racing wouldn't be that impressed by STS here. But if you know horse racing and you know the quality of the race you're watching, it's an astonishing performance. If he'd settled and had a clear run, well by just how far would he have won ?
STARS was still improving.....He fort wiv jockey and still won....YOUAMAZIN is intresting because the great ZARKAVA beat him by 2 lenghts as well...They would be close in an ARC..but one would have to back STS by a head.
wipe your mouth, this horse won at a mile, 1.2 and 1.4 all at group 1 in one season, saving his best for last, then retired, this horse would have been better with age, frankel was a great horse i agree but he wasnt as versatle as sts, the greatest horse race i have seen.
cookupastorm Frankel was a great horse, but yes he WAS campaigned conservatively. Just look at the way horses like Nijinsky, Brigadier Gerard and Sea The Stars were campaigned. Took on all comers at all middle distances. Frankel, at the end of his career, had a couple of goes at 1m 2f, but he was essentially a miler. And for me, Brigadier Gerard was the supreme miler.
Because you said 'would have' and not 'would of', you may have a point about Frankel, but over 12f, I don't think we can be certain, especially as Henry Cecil didn't fancy it, and the dam was a sprinter...
"He is a champion I reckon." Love that.
best horse racing commentary ever!...hats off Jim
I watch this every day- it is breathtaking his turn of foot will never be matched
And i had €200 on his daughter sea of class when she nearly reeled in enable in 2018
Ur daughter was a super star very unlucky in this last year .she will never be forgotten.
Greatest I've ever seen he really was a star
Bad ride by Soumillion on Tarnawa in the Arc yesterday IMO mate...

The Best there has been! Classics, Distances, Clock times. He done everything. Everything Frankel talkers. “The Best”!
Id love to have seen the stars against frankel at a mile
Best of three😂
It wouldve been close at 10 furlongs - the stars wouldve easily done frankel at the mile n a half

What about phar lap i know he was a 2 miler - but against the stars wouldve been a race

craigleech123 100 agree!, true champion !
Racehorse *
Raxta Emu that Make you feel better about yourself ?
Juddmonte wouldn't have dared put Frankel in the Arc! He'd have lost and they wouldn't have got their £175k stud fee.

Why don't these clowns give credit to horse he won jockey was a passenger
Frankel would have beat him over any distance on any ground. Still a great great horse though was STS...

Totally agree mate, Frankel would beat all
shut up, chattin bullshit
supreme owl, your fuckin clueless
The horses ran over different distances there is no way to compare them since they have different running techniques
