That was very cunning of Barry to irritate Sir Charles to the point of giving him a heart attack. And the road to high society and Lady Lyndon was clear!!
Contrary to other comments, I think Ryan O'Neal is fine in this role and this scene. Ryan's range is very limited, but so is his character's, kind of like Keanu Reeves in The Matrix. He's a cipher who advances through an unfamiliar world through tricks & deception. He should be hard to read.
I agree. He fits as a man out of his element, yet his selfish ambition counters the arrogant entitlement that he seeks to partake as a permanent member.
I've watched the entire movie just to relish this scene. So glad to see it posted here. I only knew of Frank Middlemass from the Britcom "As Time Goes By", so, many thanks!
Frank Middlemass - a great actor. The difference in character between his part here as Sir Charles and Albert Lyons the fishmonger in Upstairs Downstairs couldn't be wider.
The Sir Charles actor dissolves in all his decadence in front of our very eyes. Dying as an insult to aristocracy, so death becomes an implosion. Brilliant acting. O'Neal: not bad acting but really bad casting. Because he was a star. Kubrick didn't care about stars, the studios did. Ideally, they would have needed a Brit.
Oh no, McDowell is not a convincing cavalier type. He did Flashman for example, and he was definitely not ideal. I think O’Neal does a decent job, but ultimately I agree. What they needed was someone with the air and appearance of a handsome rake.
I always figured the narrator is recalling the story from present day (20th century when the movie came out) so perhaps just said what we would call it today, or maybe I’m just denying the fact that Stanley may have made a slight error.
Oh, yes - "Sir Charles" - please! - take those pills! ...lot of good they're gonna do! 😂 I'd been afraid just to ask what's in them, lol! - and wash them down with brandy! 🤣...even better!
Kubrick was trying to imitate the look of paintings from the era, I've heard, which perhaps explains why some of the actors are very still in certain scenes.
Great scene. But the problem with Ryan O'Neal playing against a competent actor like the guy who plays Sir Charles, is that it shows up that O'Neal can't act.
I have never understood the dissing of O'Neal's performance in this movie. And regarding this scene, the other actor definitely had the plum lines and was basically the center piece of scene.
@@Fan_Made_Videos Maybe that's what Kubrick wanted. Maybe he wanted to miscast an actor in a role not suited for him in order to create realism to the character and the film itself.
Do you really think a master like Kubrick wouldn't utilise Ryan's weakness for a strength of the movie? It's clearly exemplifying the nature of Redmond's imposter nature of infiltrating into the upper class by luck through good looks
You can all keep justifying Ryan O'Neal's casting as an impostor playing an impostor, and maybe that was the intention, but watching the film as a film I think it takes away from its effectiveness in itself. Ryan O'Neal was a box office draw and I don't think any of the actors in this were.
How's the aftertaste of orange sphincter tasting now, after your Qult leader trump will go down as one of the worst presidents in US history? Still trying to point out a boogeyman for all your own shortcomings, myopic impotence. Shame on you, sad , sad fool.
I’m obsessed with this movie because it feels like the closest thing to taking a time machine and going to that era
"Id rather be known as a cuckold than a fool" one of my favorite lines from any Kubrick film
Beyond grateful for the posting of this incredible moment in cinema.
What a wonderful scene. "Sir, let those laugh that win."
Mans took his girl then gave him an aneurysm Barry the rizzler
Yep, Barry was ruthless.
That was very cunning of Barry to irritate Sir Charles to the point of giving him a heart attack.
And the road to high society and Lady Lyndon was clear!!
That little snort was perfect.
Let this be a lesson to you: If you want to see someone go from annoyed to angry to furious, act like Barry in this scene.
Pills and brandy..good stuff
He didn't make many movies but Frank Middlemass, the actor portraying Sir Charles, had a marvelous range.
I loved his occasional appearances in the Britcom "As Time Goes By"...!
Arthur Lyons in Upstairs Downstairs!
Quite simply the best performance in a film of fine performances. A brilliant cameo piece.
I’m sorry, cameo?
@williampatrick2971
"cameo
a small character part in a play or film, played by a distinguished actor or a celebrity."

The charming sociopath is always a cipher
If Kubrick gave him the role then it was good as it is
Idk why people say this, he was fantastic

A kingdom of Belgium in the mid to late 18th century?!?!
Stop, this movie is perfect
That line always bothered me. Austrian Netherlands at this time, surely.
Ahaa, got you Kubrick!
@@Master-Mirror Me too. Seems strange that someone with such an eye for detail would get this wrong.
There were kingdoms within kingdoms. Remember Ireland was also a kingdom at least on paper.
Before the dead mans body had even got cold ,Barry Lyndon removed his shoes and put them on his own feet.😂
Beautiful.like a Cruikshank come to life.
Great acting, sire Charles.

Kubrick wanted Robert Redford.

ganz genau!
1:03 That cackle..
That pig squeal from Sir Charles at the end is not an accident
Stress was back then also in top 3 of the death causes. Nothing changes... really... Sandman...
I don’t know why but every time Charles speaks it just sounds like a giant fat cat talking especially when he says “I am sorry for you Mr Barry.”
TYVM! One of my favorite scenes.
Best death scene ever.
He wanted for this old man to die so that he could marry Lady Lyndon for the money.
The Kingdom of Belgium didn't exist then. Belgium was part of Austria.

@@Llllltryytcc Could be who knows!? In one scene they (not the narrator) are talking about "the police". The police wasn't a thing in ~1750.
Call off the film

Kubrick.

Notice the two mirrors. To the right, the role Barry wanted to play, the left, his inevitable end. The man on the left was a visual of Barry's future.
@@koolgmurder I also assume it was a commentary on the upper class. They really had nothing to do all day.
