- 🇻🇳 Greetings as always, from Hanoi, Vietnam. After my "lovely" clickbaity thumbnail from the last video, I didn't want to waste a 20km drive from Noi Bai airport back into the city, so I thought what better way to enjoy the drive than to share it with you guys.
In this video I discuss about what it's really like driving in Vietnam. I've been driving here fro 3 years, and I also have my A1 motorbike license. I took both the theory and road test, and I've driven through rain, shine, over mountain passes, along windy coastlines, and through just about every terrain you can imagine. I love driving here in Vietnam, despite the dangers and stress it can bring. Come with me as I show you how it is.

My first evening in Ho Chi Min City I hired a cab to cross the busy street back to my hotel. I was surprised how soon I got used to Vietnamese traffic as a pedestrian. However, I shall never drive in Vietnam!

Vietnamese people can guess (98% accurate) where you will drive so they won't stop. Some Viets make fun of when anyone crosses the street without looking, they will say "he inherited the road from his parents" or "he bought this road". Just things happen somewhere in the world :D

I'm setting off for a road trip in Vietnam soon. This has been very reassuring, having drive in India this looks positively civilized.
I couldn't cross the streets when I went back in 1996. My uncle had to cross with me or I followed other pedestrians. I felt like those motorbikes would run me over anytime.
Good advice Chris. Riding a bike in VN is a lot of fun, you just need to take it easy. I never had any real issues in the 4yrs I was there, just keep your wits about and never trust a clear intersection. One thing, and maybe things have changed, but I thought you could turn on red (Idaho stop) at some intersections in Hanoi. I like this style of video as we get to see lots of the city, would be good to do some walking vids around different parts of Hanoi, smaller street markets etc
You’re absolutely right. Yeah you can turn right at some intersections, it just depends if they have the sign up

Chris lái xe rất giỏi và rất hiểu luật đi đường của Việt Nam. Ước gì một số người VN có ý thức cao hơn để thật sự tuân theo luật giao thông đường bộ mà nhà nước đã quy định để an toàn cho mọi người tham gia giao thông và đỡ “ nhếch nhác” như trong clip của bạn đã quay phơi thóc, mang ghế ra đường công cộng. Chúc bạn luôn khỏe.

Chris said people do not look when they pull out in front is due to their lack of consideration for others and lack of traffic enforcement. And I'm certain you see this behavior day-in and day-out. And that's the reason you see a lot of garbage on the streets. Sooner or later cars will get crowded and people will get killed. They will learn the hard way when serious injuries and death happen to them.
you are right about keeping a good space in between and always be aware of your surrounding. Because if they get into accident, they can drag you down with them.

Gần thành phượt thủ chính hiệu VN rồi. Gợi ý thêm là không phải cứ chăm chăm nhìn gương thế hơi mệt, nếu gặp thành phần "nhẫn giả", không đội mũ, phóng nhanh hoặc xe tiếng bô to thì chủ động giữ khoảng cách là được. Nếu thích đi từ từ mà không sợ người ta vượt bất ngờ thì đi sát lề phải làn đường(trừ đoạn ngõ ngách), nếu muốn vượt thì chủ động đi sang trái tạo khoảng cách hoặc an toàn nhất là tuýt còi 2 lần trước,... Khi định vượt hay rẽ mới chú ý gương chiếu hậu là được
Cái này anh quay còn ít xe, hôm nào a nên quay ở mấy đoạn kẹt xe mới thú vị.
Luật ở việt nam dễ dãi hơn thôi, không có nghĩa là xe trong hẻm muốn lao ra như thế nào thì lao ra đâu, nếu có xảy ra đụng xe thì xe trong hẻm là xe chạy sai trước, nhưng có lẽ luật giao thông chưa đủ nghiêm nên ở vn nhiều khi lái tự do như vậy đó. Theo luật thì xe đường thẳng sẽ dc ưu tiên hơn
Ra đường ai cũng lao nhanh từ trong hẻm kinh vkl! Chán!

This has probably been mentioned in other comments, but in Oregon, USA you do not pump your own gas. It’s a state law thing and an attendant does it. Whenever I have traveled there, I always get reprimanded 😂

When I first started driving, in the 90's, most gas stations had a full-service section of pumps and a self-service section (in OH). If you accidently went to the full service area an attendant would come running out to pump your gas/wash windows and the gas price was about 20+ cents more a gallon. Haven't seen a full-service section in almost 20 yrs.
Well, in the US the lights are on the wrong side of the intersection. You stop at the red lights, if you do that in the US, you'll be in the intersection.

I saw an honest to God traffic cop in Hanoi way early one morning. He was stopping people going to work (they weren't happy), giving them grief and paperwork and I presume also fines. I couldn't help but think, what do you have to do to get a ticket in a city where people appear to do whatever they like on the road? One day on a Grab my driver drove into an intersection in which people were entering from all directions. Another bike appeared in front of us all of a sudden. Everybody stopped for a nano-second then continued on, no big deal. As a Canadian driver, I was terrified but it was clearly no big deal for anyone else. Yet it works, like some kind of crazy poetry.
Late comment but I want to say in VN, drivers either very bad or very good ones who learned to avoid all those bad ones, especially when I learn my driver license and drove on those tiny road curving (it can be 180° curvy turn up hill or down hill with extremely bad road) around mountains and hills from North West of VN 😂 yet they're overconfident sometimes and that's when accident happen regardless
I think that was easy going, Saigon district 1 at 5pm is interesting 😄 Aussie who loves riding a bike in Vietnam when I'm there! Miss it now

In Saigon, when you stop in a traffic light, there is a silent rule. You stop and left a space to the right for whom wants to turn right.
In Hanoi too. But you’re not allowed to turn right on every light 🤣
@@chrismixlewis yeah when you know the route. Sometimes you can turn right/left in red light.
But in other provinces, the rules is stricter. For example, in daklak, in several streets, you can't cross the lane and people follow it
Your report about driving and perceptions about drivers in VietNam are correct because most of them don't obey the traffic laws or
don't even know about the traffic laws, most of them need to learn defensive driving but the VietNam DMV don't promote that much.
So the way I drove in VN was that I honked a lot to let peoples I was coming...
You’re spot on about defensive driving. That’s a big thing. Driving is one thing, but driving defensively and being read to avoid any situation is a different thing.

Yeah, I don’t think I’ll be driving when I go to Vietnam. I will for sure crash into somebody or somebody will plow into me.
I think the reason Vietnamese people drive that way because most of them are on motorbikes and you know how people drive when they’re on motorbikes.
Motorbike drivers will weave in and out of traffic and do some stupid sh*t doesn’t matter where you are in the world.
The roads are pretty nice!
Here’s some tips:
1. Drive on the right side
2. Keep distance
3. Dont be a hot headed mofos
4. Stay hydrated
5. Dont use phone when u park
6. Drive around 40km
7. Wear ur goddamn helmet.
8. Avoid empty roads
9. If you know how to ride bicycle, you can ride motorbike.

True, haha. The roads aren't too bad. Hanoi has some roads that are really bumpy for motorbikes but overall it's not bad.
Empty roads are quite dangerous if you're not paying very, very close attention. With empty roads other drivers don't pay nearly as much attention when crossing the road and coming out from small roads. So if you aren't very careful, you're much more likely to have an accident.
I'll probably get an automatic motorbike (like Honda Airblade) if I ever drive in Vietnam. It's less stressful.
Indeed. I prefer manual but many people prefer an automatic.

Mình là 1 trong những người hiếm hoi không vượt đèn đỏ trên đường phố Hà Nội. Mình luôn chờ cho đèn chuyển từ đỏ sang xanh mới đi. Trong khi những người còn lại đã phóng đi trước đó 5-10s rồi
ông còn chưa nói về ninja việt nam :))) những tay lại thực sử đáng sở..còn cả các con vật trên đường nữa..

OMG Chris, with the lawlessness of driving in VN there's got to be a lot of accidents. I would LOVE to see a video about what to do in cases of accidents -- where to go, who to contact, etc considering police don't patrol.
The people will stop and call an ambulance for you. One thing that NEVER happen is people just ignore you and go on. There will always be a crowd gathered around you pretty quickly. So much so that it is quite annoying whenever an accident happen and the traffic slow down a lot.
A man dies every hour according to Viet data , it should be much higher real numbers as dead hit and go are not counted officially and also central and rural areas not reported . Do your maths

Oregon is a service pump state. It’s the law there and they yell at you if you try to pump your own gas. Something about having jobs for people.

Driving around Saigon for 15 years improves my sixth sense a lot. Not my driving skill but my "sixth sense".
It comes to a point that I just know what's gonna happen next on the road and prepare for any possible scenario that could happen. LOL
And be mentally prepared when you got caught by the police. Some are nice, some are dicks. Be prepared, read some traffic laws especially the minimum fines. You can bargain with the cops here LOL.

Có cả 2 bạn. Nó tuỳ cài đặt thiết bị của bạn. Người nước ngoài sẽ thấy tiêu đề bằng tiếng Anh.
Lái xe ở vn còn nhiều luật ngầm lắm. Còi xe là cả một nghệ thuật. Người nước ngoài còi xe khi tức giận hoặc điều gì đó không hài lòng. Còn người Việt thì còi xe nhiều mục đích khác nhau. Nói chung là ở Việt đi xe nguy hiểm vãi nhưng an toàn vãi
I grew up in Vietnam and I cannot take it when people just don't care about what's not in front of them, at least in the city. Most car drivers are decent enough to look around before turning but most motorbiker just don't care, we have a quote from somebody which is: "Đường ai nấy đi"/"Đường của ai người ấy đi." which roughly translate mean: "My road I go, your road you go." It's stupid and dangerous and frustrated to deal with.
Using motorbike mindset and applies it to cars and you got a brand-new can of worms no one ask for and no one need it.

Not just in the UK, but most of Europe.
Traffic in Vietnam works like a Lego game, fill in any blank space. But it's also sad because so many people run red lights.

Riding motorcycle in USA is actually 6,6 times more deadly than in Vietnam, based on fatality statistics (USA: 5000 motorcyclist death / year, 8 000 000 motorcycles; Vietnam: 3800 motorcyclist deaths / year, 40 000 000 motorcycles). Driving car in USA is about 1,6 times more deadly than in Vietnam (USA: 26000 car accident death / year, 200 000 000 cars; Vietnam: 160 car accident deaths / year, 2 000 000 cars). Your style of driving is called defensive here in the UK. You have to anticipate danger well ahead of you.
I would say Vietnamese do their riding just like they do their walking - except their legs are motorized. And, yes, they are the only one on the roadway at that moment. They behave exactly like how schools of fish swim in the seas. Only thing they do is aim ahead and try to avoid obstacles in front. Fish do not have side rear view mirrors, and Vietnamese act like they don’t. Of course public safety is a foreign concept to most.
One thing I was questioning is does Vietnam have speed limits? I was watching the speed you were driving in the city and it scared me, but I notice everyone else drives that way. But are there speed limits like the U.S. ?

Cris ơi, đi thẳng thì ko cần nhìn 2 gương đâu, vì ng đằng sau muốn vượt họ tự biết lách lên. Trừ khi phải đánh lái, thì nên đi chậm lại, bật xin ngan, và nhìn gương. Còn thông thường thì ko cần.
Ko bạn. Nhìn đằng sau để xem có xe ko chú ý và đâm mình. Cần thiết đó bạn. Thỉnh thoảng nghe tin có người bị chết vì bị đâm xe khi dừng ở đèn đỏ. Bạn ko nhìn gương và để họ tự biết lách là để duyên phận của bạn vào tay của người khác. Nhỡ đâu có người say, hoặc ko để ý là bạn chết đó. Tốt nhất là làm theo suy nghĩ "duyên phận nằm trong tay chính bản thân mình". Thế mới đảm bảo an toàn.

lái xe máy ở Việt Nam phải dự đoán được tình huống. Ví dụ khi nhìn thấy chiếc xe đi ngược chiều từ xa, não bạn sẽ phải chuẩn bị kế hoạch để phản ứng với tất cả các trường hợp. Chiếc xe đi ngược chiều có thể rẽ trái, rẽ phải hoặc có thể phi thẳng vào bạn, haha.

Đi xe có côn nên đổ xăng 95 đổ xăng 92 cho những dòng xe như hon Đa waen hoặc tay ga muốn xe mạnh và bốc xe khi chạy xe côn là đỗ xăng 95 đó là kinh nghiệm
4:10 ở Việt Nam cũng có quy tắc nhường đường khi giao nhau mà anh, nhưng mà phần đông họ rất ích kỷ khi lái xe, chỉ quan tâm đến bản thân còn xe khác thì mặc kệ, mà cái đấy chắc phải còn lâu mới khắc phục được
