  • My last WMATA NF C40LF ride video now are starting to be retired these buses will be missed the first every WMATA CNG buses to hit the streets back in 2001-2002. And now there time has come all the 2300s C40LF are basically gone but the 2400s C40LF are still in service for. Sad to see them go I'm trying to get more videos and picture of them before them are all gone. They are retiring a lot faster as more XN40 come into service and as more Orion VII CNG are transfer to Bladensburg Division. I was glad to get an C40LF Thursday morning on the 86 2458 sounds really good and is fast I should did enjoy my ride.

WMATA placed an order of 164 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses from New Flyer Inc. in August, 2001 in a partnership with the Pierce Transit Agency in Tacoma, Washington, which also was ordering those buses as well.
The first batch of 100 2001 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses (powered by CWI C-Gas Plus Engines) were delivered from New Flyer Inc. to WMATA's Montgomery Metrobus Division, which these buses had to be temporarily stored at, from November, 2001, up until the very last few weeks of January, 2002 CNG Fueling Station was finished being constructed and the Fueling/Maintenance Equipment/Heavy Body Shop were finished being fully modified at the WMATA Bladensburg Metrobus Division to handle the needs of the CNG buses.
Also, in order to make room for the storage of its 100 brand new 2001 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses (powered by CWI C-Gas Plus Engines), WMATA had to transfer all of its 1993-1994 Flxible D buses out of the WMATA Bladensburg Metrobus Division to other non-CNG Metrobus Divisions (mainly Montgomery, Northern, maybe even several to Landover, and a few to Four Mile Run and Arlington).
Interestingly, during the first few weeks of January, 2002, before any of WMATA's 2001 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses (powered by CWI C-Gas Plus Engines), WMATA actually shipped off the first 40 of these buses to the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, in order to provide help the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics Committee provide transportation to the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics Games up until mid-April, 2002 when the games were completed and the buses were eventually returned back to the WMATA Bladensburg Metrobus Division. The remaining 60 of WMATA's 2001 CNG New Flyer C40LF were then shipped by truck from WMATA's Montgomery Metrobus Division to WMATA's Bladensburg Metrobus Division during the very last week/very end of January, 2002.
The very first ten WMATA 2001 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses (powered by CWI C-Gas Plus Engines) were then placed into revenue service on Monday February 11, 2002 on the U2, U5, & U6 Metrobus Routes. I am not exactly sure how many more of these buses WMATA placed in revenue service between this particular date and late July, 2002/early August, 2002, or what exact routes that were placed on between this time, but I do know that these buses were randomly placed in revenue service between February 11, 2002 and late July/early August, 2002 on various routes mainly during weekday rush hour/peak period times as opposed to all-day service or weekend times.
WMATA received its remaining 64 2002 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses #2401-2464 from New Flyer Inc. in June, 2002 (of which the first 59 buses, #2401-2459, were equipped with CWI C-Gas Plus Engines and the very last five buses, #2460-2464, were equipped with John Deere Diesel Engines as part of an experiment even though they originally were equipped with CWI C-Gas Plus Engines as well).
Between September, 2000 and August, 2002, WMATA 2000 Orion VI low-floor diesel buses #2060-2099 actually operated out of WMATA's Bladensburg Metrobus Division. However; once WMATA's 2001-2002 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses began operating much more frequently, as the most dominant bus, during the very first week of August, 2002, all of the WMATA 2000 Orion VI low-floor diesel buses were transferred out of WMATA's Bladensburg Metrobus Division to WMATA's Four Mile Run and Landover Metrobus Divisions for operation.
My first time actually seeing WMATA's 2001-2002 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses was during the summer of 2002 (when I was three years old), operating on the R4 Metrobus Route on Toledo Terrace in Hyattsville, MD during the time my aunt and uncle watched me prior to me starting preschool at Greenwood inside the historic Kaiser Permanente Building right across the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center in Hyattsville, MD.
During that time, these buses looked brand new and had brand new dark blue colored seating with white diamond designs in the middle. These buses were basically painted in WMATA's 3rd generation paint scheme and had a very beautiful and unique picture of a light blue sky with trees and light green grass, painted on both the right and left sides of the fuel tanks (placed on top of the bus). The words, "THIS BUS IS RUNNING ON CLEAN NATURAL GAS" , was then printed in capitalized, italic black print below that beautiful picture. The "Stop Requested" sign during this time was a thin rectangular, light reddish, pinker colored sign with the words, "Stop Requested" in a light yellowish, whitish color.

I rode these buses along with my father a lot on WMATA Metrobus Route R2 to travel back and forth between our Plaza Towers Apartment ( located at the intersection of Belcrest Road & Toledo Terrace in Hyattsville, MD next to the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center) and Francis Fuchs Preschool ( located on Cherry Hill Road, next to the intersection of Powder Mill Road in Beltsville, MD) which I attended during both the 2002-2003 & 2003-2004 school years. My father and I would catch R2 on WMATA's 2001-2002 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses in the direction of Calverton to get to Francis Fuchs Preschool and then catch R2 on these buses back in the direction of the Fort Totten Metro Station to get back home. Interestingly, during the 2002-2003 school year; though, all of the Metrobus Routes used to actually directly enter, loop inside, and stop at the former Metrobus terminal right in front of the former G.C. Murphy's Department Store (which I guess according to my dad, closed around 1999 when I was born), and the SunTrust Bank/ ATM (which my dad told me was formerly a Hot Shoppes Fast Food Restaurant). My dad and I would board, or alight R2 right there itself until the Metrobus terminal and site of the former G.C. Murphy's Department Store were demolished on Thursday May 15, 2003 to make room for the construction of a brand new Target store. As of May 15, 2003, all of the Metrobus Routes have stopped directly entering the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center. Passengers wishing to board or alight at the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center have been required to get off at Metrobus Stops adjacent to the shopping center on either Belcrest Road, Toledo Terrace, or East - West Highway. However, because of the fact that the Metrobus Routes were going through this inconvenient change in routing, WMATA did add a brand new Metrobus Stop that did not previously exist, in the southbound direction of Belcrest Road right next to but parallel to the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center, right where the SunTrust Bank is located. Also, WMATA also added a brand new Metrobus Stop that did not previously exist in the northbound direction of where Belcrest Road intersects Toledo Road, right by where the old White University Town Center Buildings/ Kaiser Permanente Building is located. My father and I would also ride on WMATA's 2001-2002 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses a lot on WMATA Metrobus Routes R2 & R3 in the direction of the Fort Totten Metro Station, to get from our apartment complex to the K-Mart Store, located right next to the Pizza Hut, Wendy's Fast Food Restaurant, and Davco Shoe Store inside the Riggs - Sargent Shopping Center, located at the intersection of Riggs Road & Sargent Road in Chillum, MD, in order to get my diapers before Target opened inside the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center in October, 2004 when I went to Kindergarten/ stopped attending preschool. My father and I would then catch either R2 in the direction of Calverton, or R3 in the direction of the Greenbelt Metro Station to get back home. My father and I would also ride on WMATA's 2001-2002 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses on WMATA Metrobus Route R3 to get back and forth between our Plaza Towers Apartment Complex (at the intersection of Belcrest Road & Toledo Terrace in Hyattsville, MD) & the Beltway Plaza Mall (in Greenbelt, MD) to shop at the Target store there as that was the closest Target located to us at the time to get any clothes K-Mart did not have. We also bought pizza and spaghetti & meatballs at the Three Brothers Italian Restaurant there as well. I believe there was also a Bennigan's Restaurant, AMC 6 Theater in front (which closed in June, 2005), Ritz Camera, Hollywood Video, Jeeper's Indoor Amusement Park, KB Toys Store, Party City Store, Marshall's, Boston Market, Popeyes, Wendy's, Game Stop Store (originally known as "Funcoland" prior to 2003), McDonald's Fast Food Restaurant inside the mall, Sports Authority store on the back (which closed around 2005/2006 and was abandoned), AMC 8 Theater on the back (which was converted into an Academy 8 Theater in late 2006), and PetSmart on the back (which later got replaced by Gallo Clothing around late 2005/mid 2006) there as well. We would also shop at the Value City Department Store there sometimes as well. My father and I would then board R3 back in the direction of the Fort Totten Metro Station to get back to our apartment, or sometimes travel straight to the K-Mart inside the Riggs-Sargent Shopping Center at the intersection of Riggs Road & Sargent Road in Chillum, MD. My father and I have also ridden on WMATA's 2001-2002 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses lots of times on WMATA Metrobus Route R4 on very short trips to get back and forth between the Plaza Towers Apartments Complex (at the intersection of Belcrest Road & Toledo Terrace in Hyattsville, MD), and the Prince George's Plaza Metro Station since I was ferried in a stroller that time and we were lazy to walk. We would basically ride the bus up to the station on late Sunday afternoons, catch the Green Line in the direction of Branch Avenue to get to the Fort Totten Metro Station, transfer to the upper level Red Line platform to catch the Red Line in the direction of Shady Grove or Grosvenor to get to the Union Station and drop off my mom so she could catch the Greyhound/ Peter Pan Bus back to her job in New York City. However; there might have been just one time, where I believe my father and I rode R3 all the way up from our apartment to the Fort Totten Metro Station to transfer to the Red Line train. This was most likely without my mom. However; in order to get to the Prince George's Plaza Metro Station, my father, mother, and I would basically catch R4 in the direction of the Brookland - CUA Metro Station on late Sunday afternoons. In order for my father and I to get back from the Prince George's Plaza Metro Station to our apartment complex, we would catch R4 back in the direction of Highview. I have also ridden on WMATA's 2001-2002 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses a few times on WMATA Metrobus Route 86.

      @Zachary Thomason
I lived in MD/DC between 2001-2011. However; even though I was born in April, 1999 in New York City and did not actually live in MD until 2001, my mom was off from her residency program in New York City on pregnancy leave for a month, so we both stayed with my dad who was living with a friend in the Seville Condominiums on Toledo Terrace on Hyattsville, MD between April & May, 1999. My dad eventually moved out of his friend's apartment to his own apartment on Calvert Road in College Park, MD (right behind the College Park - U of MD Metro Station) sometime later that year/around 2000. However; my mom and I returned back to New York City after her leave was over since my mom had to complete her medical residency in New York City up until 2002. However; my mom only kept me with her in New York City and had her parents watch me while she was at her residency program up until September, 2001. Then, in September, 2001 (shortly before 9/11 took place), my grandparents left to California to help my aunt with her newborn son and my mom had to study for her hard medical boards exam, so she sent me back to live with my dad in MD.
My dad then got a babysitter who watched me between September, 2001 up until March, 2002 (which was when my mom passed her hard Medical Boards Exams.
Shortly after my mom passed her exam, my dad and I moved from our small apartment on Calvert Road in College Park, MD to the Plaza Towers Apartment Complex at the intersection of Belcrest Road & Toledo Terrace in Hyattsville, MD on a sunny Saturday morning in March, 2002, catching a 1997-1998, or 2000 Orion V bus on the 86 Metrobus Route operating in the direction of the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station from the former WMATA Metrobus Stop at the intersection of Dartmouth Avenue & Knox Road in College Park, MD (back in the day when 86 did not directly operate to/serve the College Park - U of MD Metro Station, by diverting off Baltimore Avenue (U.S. Route 1) onto the intersections of Paint Branch Parkway & River Road, but operated inside the portion of the College Park neighborhood closest to the College Park - U of MD Metro Station by diverting off Baltimore Avenue (U.S. Route 1) onto College Avenue, Dartmouth Avenue, Calvert Road, Rhode Island Avenue, and College Avenue) and actually entered/looped inside the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center (where we got off at).
Just about month before we moved to the Plaza Towers Apartment Complex at the intersection of Toledo Terrace & Belcrest Road,
on February 11, 2002, WMATA's very first ten CNG New Flyer C40LF buses were put into revenue service. However; I hardly saw them operate until the summer of 2002 (around July/August, 2002) when they began operating much more frequently on all-day Metrobus routes operate out of the Bladensburg Metrobus Division. I began to see them operate on the R4 Metrobus Route very often during that time.
However; around the very last few weeks of June, 2002/very first few weeks of July, 2002, before seeing WMATA's 2001-2002 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses operate, I remember catching a WMATA 2000 Orion VI low-floor diesel bus on a Saturday morning (operating on either the R3 Metrobus Route towards the Prince George's Plaza Metro Station, or R4 Metrobus Route towards the Brookland - CUA Metro Station) on a very short ride with my dad and uncle from the stop at the intersection of Toledo Terrace & Belcrest Road in Hyattsville, MD, up to the Prince George's Plaza Metro Station to catch the Green Line train. I remember the bus entering inside/looping around the Chevy Chase & Suntrust Banks inside the Prince George's Plaza Shopping Center as well as in front of the former G.C. Murphy Store site (which was eventually demolished in May, 2003 and reconstructed as a Target Store in October, 2004). During that time, I remember WMATA's 2000 Orion VI bus seat feeling reasonably comfortable but then feeling uncomfortably cold on my but after taking a seat on the train, to the point where I felt like getting off the train and back on the bus. This was during the last few days/weekd WMATA's 2000 Orion VI low-floor diesel buses operated out of the WMATA Bladensburg Metrobus Division before being transferred to other WMATA Metrobus Divisions for operation once the 2001-2002 CNG New Flyer C40LF buses began full operation seven days a week later on between the very last few weeks of July, 2002/very first week of August, 2002.
Even though my mom finished her residency in 2002, she worked at Elmhurst Hospital there up until 2004 before moving with me and my dad and finding a job teaching Psychiatry at the University of Maryland Baltimore Medical School Campus. During that time; however, I attended preschool half a day at Greenwood (inside the historic white Kaiser Permanente Building that is part of University Town Center, which had no shops, nor movie theater at the time) and the other half at the Francis Fuchs Preschool on Cherry Hill Road in Beltsville, MD. My mom only moved in with us during the fall of 2004 right when I started Kindegarten/elementary school at University Park Elementary. My entire family then bought a house a year later in University Park, MD and lived there from the fall of 2005 up until the summer of 2011. While my dad and I only moved out of MD after I graduated from sixth grade (finishing my elementary school career at University Park Elementary), my mom moved to Wisconsin during the fall of 2009 for her job at the VA Medical Center in Tomah, WI. My dad and I moved to Madison, WI (close to her) during the fall of 2011 but not to Tomah, WI so I could get a better education.

My dad; however, has lived in the MD/DC since 1980. He worked in the financial student collections unit at the University of Maryland College Park Bursars' Office from June, 1981 all the way up to July, 2011, slightly more than 30 years. He retired in July, 2011 when we moved to Madison, Wisconsin.

Sorry if this seems off topic but, in Charlotte, North Carolina, we have 2004 gillig advantages in service. We had 20 but now we only have 5. We also had 1998-2000 Novabus lfs’s, but the 1998s were retired by 2012 and some of the 2000s were retired at the end of 2017. They were my favorite buses. Also before that Charlotte had 1991 flxible metros?? Anyways they roamed the streets from 1991 to 2004. We also had 2002 Gilligs that were identical to the 2004’s but had plastic seats instead of metal with fabric. They were retired in or by June of 2018. We also have 2002-2003 gillig phantoms (suburban version) that are still in service. We have 90?? Of them and 5 were retired but I don’t know why. I just wanted to tell you about the older buses in the fleet but we do have plenty of newer buses. Also I’ll have you know that I’m 11 and a transit enthusiast. I visited Washington DC twice this year and the transit up there is amazing. Much better than what we have down here. While I was up there I just rode a ton of 2005-2006 new flyer d40lf’s lol. Anyways bye.

Great video. Seems like you're very fortunately recently getting as many C40LF as you can with only a few number of left. With more New Flyer Xcelsior XN40 coming, they'll all be history soon! These are the 1st New Flyer buses ever purchase since the start of the 2000's.
