    This channel is the single best source of art information on You Tube. Many others are interesting, some are very good, some are downright awful and can cause people to go off into the painting weeds, including some of the "official" channels of the paint companies, but your channel is THE BEST.

    You explain things so we'll and it makes so much sense. I haven't been painting but a couple of years but enjoy it when I have time to do it. I still work full time and I will be 67 in a few months. I have trouble matching my exact color if I need more. I think that is because of my low vision. I have never been able to see well but I won't let that stop me from trying. It may take me longer and I have to get very close but that is ok. I am just glad I can paint and it looks ok. Thank you for sharing these quick tips they help a lot.

    You have extremely good color perception. Where you see 10 values, I can only distinguish maybe 6, if I squint. I love your videos because you are so excellent at explaining while you demonstrate. Always helpful! Thanks so much.

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  2 года назад +2

      One way to develop that value perception is to distinguish between what's in shadow and what's not in shadow. We can usually expect to see up to five value differences in each.
      Thanks for watching!

    Thank you as ever, Dianne. You mention nomenclature; one part of the spectrum I struggle with is the violets. I was raised to call red violets purple, and blue violet, just violet. It is a small thing but for some reason those two colours have confused me since I was little 😂

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  2 года назад +2

      Gael, we use the words purple and violet interchangeably. Perhaps we should settle on just one since all the other hue-names work that way. Most of the color wheels and color theorists refer to the color in the spectrum as violet. I'd say choose the word that registers best in your perception, then when you hear the other one, just translate it in your head.
      Visualizing the colors might help, too. For example, red-violet sits between red and violet, and blue-violet sits between blue and violet. Substitute the word purple and they still sit in the same place. The English language can often be confusing.

    I like this exercise. Looks fun and interesting but as you lower the intensity of that color it does look like it is getting darker do you think?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  2 месяца назад

      That's the effect of the lighting. We do have to watch that though, because the neutralizing impact does darken some combinations, but adding back a bit of white will adjust the value.

    So with this example when I apply this method to watercolour, to obtain the right value for the blue compliment instead of being able to use white, would it mean adding a more watery dilution of the blue to create a lighter value compliment before adding to the orange ?

  • @jillhoward6263
    @jillhoward6263 2 года назад

    hank you so much this is so useful. Can I ask how to lighten the value of a colour without losing too much of the hue? I really appreciate all your videos

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  2 года назад +2

      Jill, any time you lighten a color, whether with white or a lighter color, the some of the hue will diminish. That is the nature of mixing color: adding also subtracts. If you're asking about keeping the warmth in a warmer color like orange or red, simply add a little yellow back into it when you add the white.
