My internet is lousy where I live so streaming can be a pain often times. But we're starting to get a really nice collection of all the classics as physical copies and Finding Nemo was one of the ones I knew I had to get on Blue Ray. I'm sure so many of us out there can thank this movie for us being introduced to so much of sea life, ("they live in a what?"). It was such a huge success with kids when it came out and even though we were just old enough to know it was a good story, I'm reminded now of how beautiful it is and must have been for the parents. BIG-TIME tear-jerker for me at various moments.
I'm glad you mentioned Tom Newman because it's one of Pixar's best and truest scores. It adds to the tender parts of the story, like "Nemo's theme". That theme is even more beautiful because of how it's used. Using it at the end of that terrible first scene, when we first see Nemo, and only using it a couple more times at the best moments to make them even more touching. How beautiful was it when the word is being spread of "that one dedicated father", (FEELS).
The darkness. This is Pixar's Bambi. 'Nuff said.
The animation is simply put, generationally beautiful. The effort required to artistically show us all a life underwater in a way that goes beyond the limits of what 2D animation can do. Lighting was definitely a huge part and also the movement of particles, be it dust, rust, sand, or just bubbles...was so cool. The sound effects as well, (the whale scene, good lord).
The story is like chapters, that's a great way to describe it. But I don't think they mismanaged it because even with two storylines going back and forth, adults can still discern that this is Marlin's story. Nemo's scenes are a bit shorter, I think, which is good because there's more to tell with Marlin.
The script complements the story very well and adds to how touching it is. I mean, what's the first thing Nemo says to his dad once all the danger is over and they're reunited at last? That part turned those waterworks back on wide open for me. It shows the most important thing Nemo learned from this journey and it's two-leveled because it had to be the most wonderful thing for Marlin to hear after everything he went through to get his son back.
Voice actors were great, literally all of them did their jobs to the best they could. Al Brooks is Hank Scorpio and for others who don't know the Simpsons like I do, he is unquestionably that dedicated little clown fish. And I don't think Ellen becomes polarizing in the least because like you said, Dory is critical to Marlin's development. The creators said Dory was like Marlin's second child - that's why he learns how to become a better, more trusting parent while he's on his journey to find Nemo.
I don't know if it's my favorite Pixar movie, but I couldn't say it isn't because it's lacking something. It'd have to be because one of the others just has a little more. With some of the best animation and most beautiful of Tom Newman's work to date, and all of it beside a deeply satisfying adventure story, we can all look back and say, "Nemo is just a really cool movie."

I disagree. The juggling of two plot lines works well in this film, because it is about maturing as both a parent and a child. I don't know how much more powerful this movie would have been if it weren't for the decision to give stories for both Marlin and Nemo and showing them developing as both a father learning to be brave and accept his son his growing up and a son learning his own bravery and worth and getting his father to understand and accept.

This is kinda a Goofy Movie but done by Pixar now that I think about it, and that’s NOT a criticism

If they just decided to have the story solely focused on Marlin, we would never be able to understand how much Nemo learned and how he is coping, and if it were only focused on Nemo, it would have been another generic one-sided story about a brave kid trying to overcome the criticisms of an asshole father.

I disagree. I never saw this problem at all. People tend to hate so much that has so much in it. This movie doesn't have that problem with juggling multiple plot lines like some other recent movies and not knowing how to develop them. I am confused as to why this movie keeps on getting swept under the rug now and is barely ever talked about compared to a lot of other Pixar movies.

If you're going to call Dory annoying simply because of her short term memory loss then you've clearly never encountered anyone with mental/ learning difficulties in your life.

I didn’t. I love Dory but I know some people aren’t a fan of her usually because of the actress who plays her. Check out my Finding Dory review I explain more their
