I think that all makers SHOULD conclude an agreement to have standardized protocols, in order to avoid having to buy, for example, a new control unit for each and every hardware device added to an automation system. I don't which to live the same nightmare we had in the 80s and 90s ; having a bunch of remote controls that have the same commands, but different codes. The result? Tens of millions of RC still working, that goes to garbage for incompatibility reasons.
Looks interesting but expensive! I’d like to use HA but would like a specific Raspberry Pi recommendation for a medium sized system. I don’t see one in your shopping lists. Would you mind taking a few minutes to recommend exactly what I need? I’d appreciate it greatly!
If you think it is too expensive, you can try to look for the Homey Bridge. I don't know if it's on the US market, but if so, the price will be less than USD 100. Try to look it up 👍
Question: I own a few Tuya/Smart Life devices, but would like to expand my home automation. I found so-called Multi Mode Hubs, which appear to be able to connect with non-ZigBee devices (like the Tuya devices I already own) and ZigBee devices. Looks like the best option for me to keep using old devices and add new ZigBee-compatible devices. Am I correct with my assumption? Anything important to know about those multi-mode hubs? Thanks :-)
Could you make a home assistant to homey, or more homey to home assistant tutorial? I've used homey for years and are now adding home assistant so would be nice if I can get things from homey in home assistant
@smarthomesolver How are you using this in your environment? I am running home assistant for my automations but i have devices sent out to homekit through home assistants homekit bridge so i can use siri to control stuff, if need be, same with amazon but all automations are done in home assistant. This looks cool and i like the flows as i can't seem to figure out node red but i was curious how you plan to use it with your setup.
This looks like a user friendly device with an intuitive interface. One concern is the fact it took you 5-6 times to pair a Zigbee device, that makes me believe that those devices will drop off the zigbee network after sometime, I would suggest it would be due to wifi interfence. Great device though to get yourself in the door with all things IoT.
Not necessarily, though many people choose to keep using Hue hub and command it through Homey. The benefit is that you'll have a backup in case of problems with Homey plus you can use several Hue hub specific features like scenes.
Hey reed, you should review Switchbot’s new robot vacuum. I guess it changes out water for the mop part of it by itself by connecting to a water line in your house to the base station. Maybe worth checking out?
I'm surprised about the many price complaints. To me 400 isn't that expensive if it saves me a bunch of time compared to building a Home Assistant setup. I mean, we've all spent much more on sensors, devices, smart lights and speakers anyway. I know I have.
Wow, this video is a comprehensive guide to the Homey Pro smart home hub! I appreciate the detailed breakdown of hardware, apps, automations, and device compatibility. It's great to have all this information in one place. I'm considering getting the Homey Pro, and this video has been really helpful in making an informed decision. Thanks for sharing your insights and experiences! 👍
I like this but I’d say that Hubitat might be the strongest choice for someone who wants the power of home assistant without the hassle of dealing with the pi. I say this because the Hubitat forums are filled with support whereas Homey might take some time to get there.
Hubitat is a good choice for those who used SmartThings and want to keep using WebCORE and have everything run local. Homey is more user friendly than Hubitat.
Yea, heard about it it for a while now (since February, I think. But they kept delaying it, until you featured it, that is) I wished it's priced a little lower, like 299 or even less, that would be nice.
Why LoRa? The WiFi is meant to connect your app to the device and the device to the internet on cave you don't have ethernet at that location. If you use the optional ethernet adapter then WiFi can be disabled.
Been on HA for years, and I might consider this. Leaving ST and HE for HA made me happy for a while, but the lack of user friendliness and how finicky HA can be might have me switching soon. I have a constant fear of updating an app or OS and completely borking my setup. Heck, sometimes HA hangs on me just because it wants to, and when it does, can take all of my Zwave devices with it.
If you’re running it off a Rasp Pi then that’s your issue. It’s better to run it on an SSD x86 system with lots of RAM. You can get old NUCs for half the price of the Homey that will run circles around this hockey puck. I mean $400 for 2gb ram?
@@AtracBreezy I'm running it off an unused laptop for which the specs are overkill. It's not hardware and performance that's a buzzkill for me. It's a platform that is not at all intuitive for most people and can take a crap on you any day if you even blink at it the wrong way.
I have run both Homey Pro (the ball) and Home Assistant. Both have its pros and cons, so it’s impossible to just have one. The good with homey: Works better with Aqara devices than HA Connects to a lot of things Easier to use The bad with Homey: No dashboards No template sensors (that I know of, please correct me with a solution) Price No good energy dashboard. The one that exists hasn’t been updated since 2021 and isn’t very good.
Tried the app, connected it to my Hue lights. Yawn.. The app is not easy to use, like where are my rooms / groups whatever they are called in Hue? I looked and looked and it was not obvious. The flows initially seemed to make sense but then got confusing. Gave it a chance but no i'll pass.
I think you're talking about the cloud-based Homey app which is different from the local Homey Pro. I have the latter and found it very easy to get started, create rooms and Flows. It's my first automation device but it seemed intuitive enough.
I switched. Went from Home Assistant to Homey Pro. I still have Home Assistant on my home network, but it is mainly used to help get devices that aren't in Homey Pro apps, over to Homey Pro. I struggled with getting automations to work in Home Assistant the way I wanted them too, and decided to give Homey Pro a try with flows. It has been great and love it! I didn't know about it until saw this video. All of my flows just work, it's nice. I like tweaking them, vs Home Assistant, where I really didn't like trying to tweak Home Assistant. I'm always looking to try some new fun flows in Homey Pro. I have my theme music playing (Imperial March, of course) for me, and if not home, "Let The Bodies Hit The Floor" when my room goes active. I just make sure that before I purchase something new, it is part of the Homey Pro network, and so far, most of what I've wanted to get, is. Think Nanoleaf Essentials is about only device I have that isn't part of the system, for things like playing scenes. Nanoleaf Shapes have scenes, so that works.
It seems like a great product. Unfortunately Homey doesn't support 433MHz in the US yet and they don't know when they will be granted a license. I would love to use it to control my Somfy RTS roller shades.

I am using the previous Homey Pro since 2018, still expanding and going strong. Everything is still fast and snappy and supported by Athom (Homey) So the new one is future proof...
I have the 2019 model. Controls central heating, IR heating, air filter, ventilation (windows) lights, home theater, energy, etc. Pretty complex flows made, all works perfectly. Even if a sensor doesn't work, you can just program a plan b.
Far too expensive, at around half price I would consider it but not for this.
If you think it is too expensive, you can try to look for the Homey Bridge. I don't know if it's on the US market, but if so, the price will be less than USD 100. Try to look it up 👍
Can it speak natively to echo without virtual switches ?
$399. For a smart hub!! I guess thats somwhere in-between smart things and control 4. But really limits your customer base.
Hello, do you know if Wifi Thermostats BeOK are compatible with Homey Pro?
Great review, just what people need to know/understand from this type of device ! Thanks !
Is this able to replace a home assistant hub?
On security…… where is user data stored and does the company have access to user data?
This looks like a user friendly device with an intuitive interface. One concern is the fact it took you 5-6 times to pair a Zigbee device, that makes me believe that those devices will drop off the zigbee network after sometime, I would suggest it would be due to wifi interfence. Great device though to get yourself in the door with all things IoT.
I have almost 250 zigbee devices connected to homey pro 2023 and no problems whatsoever.
It has more to do with Aqara than Homey zigbee in general . And sometimes the firmware level of the zigbee device.
Pairing varies by brand of sensor and the app. For example, Fibaro works without any problems.
Nice video Reid. Sticking with Smartthings for now!
i love it but the hardware could be better
If I buy honey pro would I still need Phillips and aqua hubs
If I get this hub, will I still need a Lutron and Hue hub?
Nope
Not necessarily, though many people choose to keep using Hue hub and command it through Homey. The benefit is that you'll have a backup in case of problems with Homey plus you can use several Hue hub specific features like scenes.
Hey reed, you should review Switchbot’s new robot vacuum. I guess it changes out water for the mop part of it by itself by connecting to a water line in your house to the base station. Maybe worth checking out?
Haha your child stealing the hub was a nice sketch :)
Yes I’ve heard about it for a few years now in the UK! And I agree about the price.
What about the bluetooth antenna
Is that's what happened to stringify?
600 CAD!!! No way!
Open source forever and nothing else
That flow pun is underrated lol.
It seems really diluted to me. I guess I have... Homey apathy.
I'll see myself out.
Can I disable the WFi?
Why doesn't it have LoRa?
Why LoRa? The WiFi is meant to connect your app to the device and the device to the internet on cave you don't have ethernet at that location. If you use the optional ethernet adapter then WiFi can be disabled.
Got my Pro a few weeks now and I love it
How many devices can it have via wifi? Doesn't seem like it could handle a whole house of smart lights.
Your wifi is the limiting factor not homey.
Wifi itself has limits that you'll reach before the Homey Pro.
OMFG!!!! $599 here in Canada 😞
Wowwwwwww that's niceeeee
I already have it!
400.00😂 NOPE
This hub seems great!!
DOA
Thanks Reed.
I have run both Homey Pro (the ball) and Home Assistant. Both have its pros and cons, so it’s impossible to just have one.
The good with homey:
Works better with Aqara devices than HA
Connects to a lot of things
Easier to use
The bad with Homey:
No dashboards
No template sensors (that I know of, please correct me with a solution)
Price
No good energy dashboard.
6:34 😂 I dont care if this hub can transform and cook me dinner at night. For that price they can keep it.
$400 for a hub? No thank you.
Please teach me how to make a smart home
It seems like a great product. Unfortunately Homey doesn't support 433MHz in the US yet and they don't know when they will be granted a license. I would love to use it to control my Somfy RTS roller shades.
433mhz in USA is used for some Garage / Gate Remotes / Operators.
@@gomalibusurf6098 sorry, I meant *Homey* doesn't have 433MHz yet. I updated my original comment for clarity.
Hi
Don’t bay the homeypro before you read forum on the homey can’t add zwave
It can for sure!
What are you talking about. My whole network is z-wave. It works fine.
@@Yggdrasil42 please read forum
@@Yggdrasil42 maybe for you but not for many people
wow this thing is super expensive for a micro pc that is basically all it is. micro pc with multiple radios .
It's also the software and app. You're paying so you have to do less yourself.
@@Yggdrasil42 it's a computer dude. it will fail and require updates and patches and mods and code. nothing is easy in home automation.
i think you really should stop getting money from manufacturer
No one paid me for this video. I tried it because I’ve seen tons of comments asking about it over the years. If you watched the whole thing you’d see I share the good and bad.
Hi Reed. Thank you so much for the reply and the test for audience is really sweet. I really love your content and they are super helpful. I just somehow don't like the shared product and worried about it may hurt your popularity,@@SmartHomeSolver
I'm sorry, I don't care HOW good it is. That name.... Having to tell anyone I had a "Homey" Pro in my house? Not gonna happen.
Weird. Here in The Netherlands, where Homey is from, it's not considered a strange name. Certainly not stranger than Hubitat or Domoticz.
@@Yggdrasil42 Have to agree with you on Hubitat - but haven't heard of Domoticz yet. But at least those don't have other meanings. Guess I'm just too old.. 😛
