    I'm taking a wild guess Im thinking with driving it like that for awhile possible the chunk of fork did the gear in. Then maybe that's when the splines got loose on the shaft. Gotta think that cover is not very big and road bumps or reversing could have moved that chunk around in the back and it made contact. Then with the diesel engine torque it crunched it in the gear a possibility. I see welds too on the ring not great welds but It does work to keep the ring on.

    Regardless of this videos title, the NV4500 is a great transmission! What sucks is people's driving skills or lack thereof. Pretty apparent that the previous owners rode it hard and put it away wet! Lugging the engine in 5th (especially while towing) is the biggest cause of 5th going out. You don't even need to use the clutch with an NV4500 if you know how to shift properly. Mine just rolled over 250k, has towed in excess of 24k on multiple occasions and is still going strong 😎

    Years ago my 5pd went out after 289000 miles on it. The failure was a ball bearing assembly breaking and dumping the balls into the oil and the gears got chipped up and the primary shaft got out of round.
    I rebuilt myself over 2 weeks in my garage and the parts were purchased from the dealership for $800.00.

    The NV4500 is an awesome transmission, where people do the most damage is when changing the oil like in this video it's so obvious you have the wrong oil in it. Another bad decision people make is when pulling a load they will run 5th gear lugging the engine that's what tears out the 5th gear. These transmissions have a lot of brass in them, 90W gear oil is the worst thing you can do to it, a lot of your parts houses will tell you the synchromesh oil is what you're supposed to do, another bad decision Synchromesh oil is definitely the wrong oil. The GM 75W-85 GL-4 is expensive and is NOTHING like synchromesh oil. Synchromesh is basically 5/30 synthetic motor oil, not good in the NV4500. The ONLY substitute for the right GM oil is Red Line Synthetic MT-85 it is the exact same stuff. This oil is almost clear, and trust me put some on you finger and do the same to the other hand with regular oil you will feel the difference.

      The NV4500 is barely adequate behind a 4.3L V-6 gas engine. With updates they are fine behind a small block gas engine or a stock 160HP 12V Cummins. Any more torque than that chews 'em up and spits out the pieces, just like this one. 5th gear isn't the only failure. They are known to clean the teeth off 3rd gear as well behind anything more than a bone stock 24V.

    The nv4500 is a very good trans and it came in not only dodge but gm products. The only real weak point it 5th gear and 90 percent of issues are with the diesel when doing alot of lugging the engine in 5th gear. Got my 98 dodge fairly cheap cause 5th gear was gone. That trans was rebuilt by some grade school kid. Thats your first problem. Second one is the wrong oil was put in it. You don't use 90W gear oil in an NV4500. It takes a special lubricant. Third problem is, and I speculate here, F F & L probably lugs his diesel at too low an rpm. The power strokes at low rpm act like a big impact wrench on that retaining nut. The title of this video is what really sucks.

      No controversy. Redline MT-85 is the only lube that matches the Castrol Syntorq LT. It's actually better than the Castrol, IMO. My 4500 shifts better with the Redline than it did with the Castrol, and it shifted great with the Castrol. Even GM recommends using MT-85 in the NV4500. If a 4500 gets a fluid change or repair at a GM dealership, that is what they fill it with. Not sure about Ram dealers, but I'd be very surprised if they didn't use it.

I was also only 275hp not all turned up like most these guys. Yes I had full splined mainshafts and tryed all the different style nuts I even tryed a slip on nut retainer that does behind the nut only to destroy my transfercase because it came loose and put pressure on the input on the t case. What a joke of a transmission. If I wasn’t blowing 5th up I blew up 3rd gear and has countless bearing failures even with the dang pto coolers and still being over full of fluid. • @WTFChuk
      @WTFChuk 4 года назад +2

      @@prevost8686 the problem is that the trans is a crap design. All the gears need to be inside the case, between the support bearings, not overhung off the back side. Also, the 5th countershaft gear should be pressed on to splines and constantly driven just like the 3rd countershaft gear. 5th speed gear should run on needle bearings like the rest to the mainshaft gears, and engaged to the mainshaft by a conventional slide coupler arrangement. It would have been simple to combine it and reverse with the same coupler being as they use the same shifter rail.
      Instead of doing the above, they tried to cobble a 5th gear onto the ass end of a 4 speed trans. The result was predictably dismal. They have an adequate life span behind a gas engine, but the large torque pulses of the 6 cylinder diesel just beats the pitiful 5th gear to death.
