Dell Optiplex 3020 teardown reassembly, features overview and upgrade info

I received a few of these Optiplex 3020 systems a couple days ago, these teardowns on common machines seem popular so I figured I would do one on this model. This is a little more complete than I normally do them. In this video I completely break down an Optiplex 3020, fully reassemble it, go over the features, and discuss potential upgrade options.

it will support a socket 1150 xeon...haswell h3....it is a cheap and easy upgrade...it can also use enterprise duty hard drives...

I dont know if that is necessary anymore though, 4790 chips are pretty cheap now.

Can you upgrade the to wifi and bluetooth? i purchased a 7260HMW that said it would fit a Dell Optiplex 3020.

I think you would need either a low profile PCI-E internal or a USB, I dont believe the 3020 has an internal Mini PCI-E connector. Typically the 30 model(3020, 3040, ETC) is the lower end with more limited expandability

I got one but the sound only comes out of one speaker from the rear jack port. will a new sound card fix this?

Bro i need ur help, i recently bought this, after 2 months suddenly doesnt turn off, no light in any colour in on/off button, only the motherboard has a Orange light (no blinking just Orange) i tried change ram, cleaning, if i press reset button of power suply fan cpu start work

What graphics card could go In this machine besides the gt 1030? Space is very limited and I doubt that a gtx 1050 or gtx 1650 would fit unless you get some pci extenders.

Bought one of these. It doesn't have a DVD drive but I want one and have a HDD and a SSD drive.
Surely they do adapter leads to get round the lack of sata port problem?

Yeah, you can get a hard drive bay adapter to replace the optical drive with a sata storage drive

Oops, I thought you wanted a hard drive... if you want an optical drive its just a standard notebook form factor sata optical that goes in the slot designed for one

@@dragonsystems5973 Thanks for the reply. I've sorted it now. That's not what I was after. I wanted a HDD for storage, a SSD for the OS and a DVD +/- RW drive as well.
I bought an expansion card with 2 SATA sockets on it and bought a Y splitter power cable so I can power all 3.
The SSD tucked under the HDD (no heat from the SSD so no issue). I plugged that to SATA 0. The HDD to SATA 1 and the DVD drive to the expansion card. Job done.😁

@@LewieLeway HI! Im doing the same thing now, but without the expansion card, as i dont need the optical drive. But the Y splitter cable wont power ? both disc, or even one. Do you know if the problem is the quality of the cable? or the expansion card is really needed for this, even if i dont need the optical drive?

@@fernandaflores914 Hi there. The expansion card is only for the extra SATA socket.
If you are only wanting to power a SSD and a HDD then the onboard sockets are enough. If you put your original power cable in and it powers up fine, then you try the splitter cable on your main drive and you get nothing then I guess it can only be a faulty cable. Do make sure the third party cable is seated properly though. Hope you get it sorted. PC's can be so frustrating.

Great for you, I've set literally hundreds of these up. They run fine with or without it, as I said, and I very clearly stated I didn't encourage or discourage removing it, it's fine either way... but I'm sure Mr. Armchair expert knows everything
