  • Starting this journey with you with my first video! Please excuse creepy white Jesus in the background.
    About me and my channel:
I'm a nonbinary trans POC documenting my experiences and the latest transition in my life: HRT.
I'm hesitant about sharing my business all over the internet, but because I was so encouraged by hearing other folks' stories (on RUclips, Tumblr, and elsewhere), I decided I wanted to show love for queer and trans communities by telling my story. Being vulnerable--especially in such a public forum--is scary, but I hope doing so does justice to the love I have received and want to give.

I'm impressed that you have your students not call you "Ms."! I never had the courage (or didn't care enough?... not sure) to do that. Students always called me "Ms.," and it didn't seem fitting, and now they call me "Mr.," which is validating, amusing, and also surprising, each time. I'm not used to it!

That's cool that you're on the road to starting T! If it's something that you truly want, it's super exciting and empowering! How do you think going on T will play out in terms of your work/teaching?

TheSLOfox I'm not sure. I usually use LGBTQ identities as an example somewhere in the course. And the past year, I've had at least one reading that dealt with trans identities. Students tend not to care about my identity, and when they do, they seem to want to be affirming. Or at least that's what I have observed at my schools in the past few years. I work in an urban area, so that would likely be much different in some of the places I've lived. In fact, I'm on the job market, but because of my fairly recent decision to go on T, I've decided to be much more choosy when it comes to the towns and states I'm willing to work in. Maybe a couple years down the road, I can rethink that. But I want to be in as affirming an environment as possible right now. At this point, I don't want to change my name or gender marker. I have
some guesses about what kind of situation this will cause for me, but I'm not sure I can anticipate everything.I have all sorts of concerns about being able to be hired, but academic departments tend to be more liberal minded...so I'm hopeful. In terms of interacting with students though, I feel like I have the advantage. I'm in control of their grades. I'm the one setting the agenda for what we read and learn. I'm sure there will be assumptions, attitudes, and comments to deal with. But I think I'll be able to handle that better than coworkers and supervisors and above all those who may hire me.

TheSLOfox PS, I added a little more about my concerns about hire-ability here: loveisvulnerability.tumblr.com/post/100111987387/teaching-and-going-on-t I'll have to write a blog post sometime about my interactions with students. Good idea. Thanks!

Hey! I'm super stoked and super proud of you. All experiences are different so I can't speak for you but from a personal point of view I know how difficult and scary this is/can be. I'm here if you ever want to talk. Stoked for you! xox -Thy
