One of my favourite things about this movie was the contrast they made between Dawsey and Mark. We start with Mark overloading her with all these roses; then she meets Dawsey and he gives her flowers that he picked on the side of road. You also see it in their rings. Her engagement ring from Mark is this huge rock and her wedding ring with Dawsey is a simple gold band. She didn't need all the frills that Mark insisted on showering her with. Dawsey didn't need any of that to get her to love him - she just needed some wildflowers and a pig farmer.
Yes! And there were other images suggesting that she was being tied down by Mark. For instance, when she stares longingly at the balloon floating freely to the ceiling away from the other balloons and the wealthy, vapid society at the party with Mark. Also when she leaves Guernsey with him by plane the camera pans down to him tightening the belt around her waist.
Haley Kleckner The subtle things in this movie were so beautifully done! I didn't think of the balloons, but Mark also puts his hand on her shoulder when Dawsey leaves to tell Kit about Elizabeth. He does it both as a comforting gesture and also to hold her back from following Dawsey. It was if Mark was saying "you aren't apart of the family here, you belong with/to me." I just finished the book and Mark is much more possessive and domineering & their breakup is not nearly as amicable as in the movie.
Emmelle, I love your comment about the diamond that Mark gave to her. I feel like that ring was so symbolic of their relationship. It was exciting at first but it soon became nothing but a weight upon her. I loved the small moment after their breakup, when Juliet put all of Marks roses out into the hallway (making it look like a funeral parlor!) then she closed the door to her room and just took a deep breath and stood a little straighter. She was finally able to BREATHE after that weight had been removed. The whole movie was full of small, understated moments. I just loved it.
I an eager bookworm & it’s absolutely true how books can help one cope, relate, & inspire people daily. Not to mention how writing can connect strangers together intimately no matter where you live. Almost like The Book Thief, but plus the romance. Love it 💟 Not to mention the Downton Abbey reunion. 😍
This is THE greatest movie I have ever seen. I literally watch every day! I just love the story and the acting is superb...every single character - I truly believe that I am watching a real life story as it actually unfolds before my eyes with the actual people involved! I have never been so mesmerized by a movie before!
I could not have said this better. I feel exactly the same way. And to the other responder to your comment, I have seen many, many, many 😉movies over a lifetime this far
My great-grandmother is from Guernsey. She lived through the occupation shown in the film and I’ve heard many many stories over the years from her about her experiences. The film means more than it would, if I didn’t have the familial connection, however, I’d have fallen in love with it whatever. Love this couple. 💛🇬🇬
I'm not a big fan of romance, but Lord this was such a good film. The dynamic between Juliet and Dawsey is both so tantalising and sweet, it had my heart racing. And of course both Lily James and Michiel Huisman did a fantastic job creating such great chemistry between the two. Love the edit it was gorgeous, keep making top quality content ❤
I looooove this movie. I think I've watched it about 20 times so far. You can tell from the beginning that Juliet is longing for a simpler life and that Mark doesn't really understand her. She's more of a trophy for him. Dawsey lives the simple life that she dreams of, but he's not a simple man (and, comon, he's GORGEOUS) and he's a perfect match for her. I love the voices over the credits, especially Sidney saying No! More Gin! (that's adorable). This movie is perfect!
A gem of a film, skilfully edited and directed. Apart from romance and books, the central theme is loss. How does Dawsey know from her letter that Juliet will not marry Mark when Evan does not? It's in the quote of Charles Lamb's poem, written after the horrific killing of his mother by his sister Mary in an acute manic episode. Mark doesn't understand about the effect on Julia of her parents' death. All the other characters are stuck in their grief, compounded by previous losses, unable to move on until some closure is reached by the confirmation of Elizabeth's death. This is why Juliet forms such a bond with them. I love the editing sequence which connects Juliet's crystal memento of her parents with the flowers that Kit had placed in her hair from her treasure box, a powerful and heartrending symbolic act.
I absolutely love this movie. Love the chemistry between Dawsey and Juliet. It’s simple yet so captivating and real and raw. It’s what keeps me going back to the movie
i love this movie because, even though it was set in the 1940s, it goes against traditional gender roles. dawsey was a single “father” and juliet was the one who proposed.
There's a very good reason why excellent fiction often touches us deeper than our everyday lives ever can, but no sense going into that! This movie truly moved me in a positive way. A+++++
I went on a Girls Weekend with some of my best friends from high school a month ago and one of them said that we HAD to watch this movie. Well, we all loved it and I've watched it, in part or in full, about a dozen times since AND read the book AND listened to the soundtrack (which is also oh RUclips). Everytime I watch it, I see something new that I hadn't noticed before. It feeds into so many interests of mine....fascination with the WWII era, love of literature, vintage clothing styles, it featured several of my favorite Downton Abbey actors....the list goes on. I also loved that there was no nudity and very little strong language, yet it told a wonderful, in depth story. I know that a sequel would fall flat, but both the movie and the book left me wanting more.
Beautiful!! I just saw this movie the other day and I absolutely loved it!!!!! The Guernsey Literary and Potato-peel Pie Society is a wonderful story about war, hardship, courage, friendship and love. And Dewsey and Juliet have a beautiful romance in this film.
Just watched this movie and it was brilliant. Then read the book and it’s even more brilliant! Loved the chemistry between these two and this video is so beautifully edited❤️

Awesome movie! Might be my number one pick of all time! Excellent cast, direction, photography, writing, etc., etc. Lily James is a revelation. Can see it on Netflix.
I fell in love with Dawsey in the book. Now I love rereading the book picturing Dawsey as he appears in the movie. Michael Huisman was perfect. The character of Dawsey Adams is a sweet and gentle, thoughtful charmer. BTW, the film didn’t get a theatrical release in the US and was a different cut when it played on Netflix. But still wonderful! Edit: The opening notes of the song featured here sounds like Journey and I was VERY concerned for a second.
I absolutely adore this book and the movie made it better because the romance and the friendship are so genuine!!!! I cannot tell you how many times I laughed when I read the book!!!! (Isola is my favorite character) Juliet and Dawsey are made for one another. They are perfect

If the pig farmer is as nice, as hardworking, and looked like Huisman, I would reconsider too! LOL!

The new Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Dorsey!
