    Why the censorship? At about 35 secs the Duchess explains how she chose the Highland officers who she wanted to dance. Her daughter turns to her and says “mama, you chose all the big ones.” (!)
    Mum hushes her daughter by putting her finger on the latter’s lips.
    Why has that few seconds worth of the movie been deleted?

    I just read book by Simon Lewis. Seems this is the man on 0:57 was not a Gordon Highlander, nor was he Scot, he was New Zealander, and he was cast for the role because of his looks. He coudn't dance, hence he is shown only from waist up, they tried to teach him but it didn't help. Of course all other dancers were Gordon Highlander, actual soldiers, and the were forbidden from travelling to Ukraine, but this New Zealander actor did travel to there and spent several months there, waiting for his scene to be shot - where he is marching and singing

    Interesting to see the more reasonable sized sporrans worn before the Victorians imposed the ridiculously large, clumsy ,hairy things that seem to have a life of their own when kilted soldiers march. Could not the remnants of the kilted regiments get back to a less exaggerated size of sporran.

    • @maconescotland8996
      @maconescotland8996 2 года назад

      Incidentally AFAIK, as a general rule sporrans were not worn in action, likewise the smaller plain highland purse.

    • @johnv503
      @johnv503 Год назад

      they look like officers of the Black Watch Regiment. The producers even used the regiment's assigned officer's claymores for this scene, so most likely they must have employed the present-day troopers of the Black Watch Regiment to recreate the scene.

    • @obi-wankenobi1233
      @obi-wankenobi1233 2 месяца назад

      @johnv503 The actors might be officers, but they are not portraying officers here, and not of the 42nd. The yellow facings indicate it's the 92nd Gordons. Additionally, the coatees being single breasted and without the tell-tale gold/silver braiding shows that the dancers are in fact enlisted men.
