  • We've owned our two Tucktec folding kayaks for a year now. These are hard shell folding kayaks that weigh about 26 pounds. We show you how a folding kayak works and performs. Tucktec kayaks are compact and portable. We will talk about our experience with owning a folding kayak and take you for a paddle in the bay where we will see egrets, osprey and a horseshoe crab. We have featured these kayaks in over ten videos now on our RUclips channel and have used them in so many different environments from lakes, to rivers, to the bay and even a canal. We are pleased to say we are happy with our purchase of the 2022 Refurbished models that we bought in 2023.

      Glad you enjoyed it. For me, the only water that gets in is some minor splash from the paddle. One thing I do always keep in mind is that if you did tip, reentry in the water would be difficult with the way the material flexes. I always go with a lifejacket and won't go out on the bay if conditions are rough.

    I like that it would be compact for travel, but I just don’t think I could make myself get in one of those. I’d be so scared it would unfold or something. I wear a life jacket, but am still pretty terrified of drowning. I still have issues on my traditional molded kayak lol. I feel the same way about the blow up ones. I’d be worried it would lose air. But I have considered getting one of those for when we travel and it’s not really convenient to take the regular kayaks. Sure looks like you had great weather for some kayaking. Now you got me all wanting to go kayaking. We haven’t done a trip out this year. It’s an interesting boat. Haven’t seen one before. Thanks for sharing.

    • @hikingoutdoorfamily
      @hikingoutdoorfamily  2 месяца назад +1

      Yes, if you are scared of falling in then you probably wouldn't feel secure enough in this. I think this type of kayak would probably make you feel anxious. We've never tipped, had it unfold or anything like that. It has metal latches and then cotter pins to ensure it stays together. I always wear my lifejacket and I can swim, so that helps me feel a bit safer. I do think if you did tip, you would not be able to re-enter from the water because you can't use the sides to push off of. It is really a great time of year for kayaking. I hope you get a chance to get out on the water.

    • @hikingoutdoorfamily
      @hikingoutdoorfamily  23 дня назад +1

      Hi, we have a 2022 refurbished model which they do not have any right now on the website. I did just test the BOTO and it was insanely light, I was impressed. I will have that review video up in a week. I would say you want to choose what is most important to you and where you will be kayaking. If you are going to be casually paddling and really want the lightest possible go with the BOTO. The only thing I disliked about the BOTO was that it is flat bottomed and I felt that made it a little less easy to paddle. If you kayak more often and maybe go in more difficult conditions with rocks etc, I think you'd appreciate the regular more heavy duty model. I have only used the BOTO once so far, but I plan on keeping doing reviews and updates on how it holds up. I can speak to the durability of our 2022 models, the two we have have held up so well and we use them in the bay, rivers, canals and lakes. Feel free to ask any more questions if you have them!

    I was this || close to buying an inflatable, but someone on Reddit mentioned Tucktec and I've been reading and watching a lot about them since (and have all but abandoned the inflatable plan). I liked your enthusiastic video about the Tucktec and kayaking in general and especially appreciate your comments about self- (or buddy-) rescue being hard/impossible, given how much the gunwales (sides) flex.
    To that end, I've seen a couple videos where folks do a dock launch and basically step into the kayak, sit down, and go, but I assume yours was a beach launch (which is probably how/where I'd be launching locally to me). Would you be willing to describe how you enter/exit your Tucktec at the shoreline (since I make up that steadying oneself with the gunwales while entering is not possible, given how much they flex)? Thank you much!

    • @hikingoutdoorfamily
      @hikingoutdoorfamily  16 дней назад +1

      Hi Andy, today at 3pm est I'll have another kayaking video going up where I compare the Tucktec BOTO to the traditional model. The BOTO is the 10lb ultralight, so stay tuned for that.
      For me, if it's warm weather I'll often step into the water and then turn sideways and sit into the kayak. Or I use my paddle to steady myself for support as I step in. For getting out, I often use my paddle to steady myself as well. I also sometimes get into a kneeling position and stand up and out of the kayak that way. I will try to film a short video of this process next time I take the kayak out. Any other questions,feel free to ask.

      Hi, so to be fair, I have never tried an oru kayak. I bought two kayaks at once so I could have one of my kids go kayaking with me. I made my decision based on the fact that the Tucktec was cheaper. When buying two kayaks at once, the Tucktec price difference was way cheaper. I do follow another RUclipsr called HikerDudeDad who has an oru kayak and has done some videos on it. Or you might be able to find another RUclipsr who can speak the quality of the Oru. Also no pressure, but if you do choose Tucktec I have a 10 Percent discount code they gave me to share with viewers through my affiliate link. Good luck with your decision.

      Thanks. This time of year is just so nice to be on the water - not too hot, but not cold.

    if you tip over does the Kayak sink?

      We have two of these and we have not ever tipped over in them. I do think if you tipped, getting back in would be really difficult if not impossible. With a traditional kayak, you can use the sides for leverage - with this, the sides are flexible. We stay safe by always wearing a life jacket and we all know how to swim.
