My first time seeing this series, though I'd read a bit about it. I'm impressed and enjoyed it. I think I'll watch another episode. Thanks for uploading these.
Within months of this episode the Vietnam conflict would start, and change the USA for ever. It’s like watching the calm, before a tragic storm, or seeing a split second car going to crash , and as bystander helpless to do anything to help.
Actually, American involvement started long before this episode. If you watch all the episodes in order, you'll notice that Vietnam/South East Asia is mentioned quite a few times...
Continuity goof: the helicopter has markings/no markings/markings..... Re-hashed footage: again, the helicopter. This time it's a flight of three H-34s in which one breaks away from the other two in it's flight formation. This is from a previous episode in which Capt. Ramrod, as I like to call him, gets sick with appendicitis and Rice must take over the Company (really, only two platoons) in the air assault from the aircraft carrier.
The writers had a very tough job with this one; how to craft a story involving Vietnam and still meet with the approval of the USMC. Personally, I wasn't really crazy about it, too much gunplay which wasn't dealt with all that realistically. I would have much preferred Rice to have an affair with that stewardess who turns out to be a VietCong informant while working in base to teach American advisors how to use the radio setup as a direction finder gizmo...
I agree. I've now enthusiastically watched all 29 episodes, but this is my least liked one. A few others weren't so hot among the majority which were. For me, it's obvious this episode was meant to be a lead in for the following season and was crammed packed with too much action in a poorly developed, unrealistic story. The only one I gave a 'thumbs down'. However, I'm very much appreciative that this series was uploaded and have recommended it to friends.
The late James Shigeta was an extremely underrated actor. His characters always brought pure class to the screen.
i'm glad 'the lieutenant' is back on youtube!
Thank you for uploading this great series.
What a great series.
This was a great one-season series. Not sure how long it could have been sustained after one season.
A different time slot from the one opposite the Jackie Gleason show. second 2 would have been a sure bet.
Eventually they would have to change the name of the show to “The Captain”
Gary is and always will be the man !!!

Roddenberry loved the April surname
Guess what Rice's middle name is: Tiberius (saw that in an earlier episode).
@@PlasmaCoolantLeak Much like James Tiberius Kirk
Robert April, on Star Trek and Paladin.
Gary Lockwood would have made a better Captain Kirk.
@@diallomahdi8908your right. I agree

Love the way they show Nam as “Hong Kong” lol !
At least Rice finally got to 'Nam..Gomer Pyle never did.
Powerful episode!
Hanang=Da Nang
You can’t kill a UCLA football player Dee !!!!
This isn’t Pendleton Baby !
Just saw Greg Morris who would go on to greater fame in “ Mission Impossible “.

I wonder if this series had made it to Season Two, would we had seen Rice get promoted to 1LT and his platoon make its way to Vietnam?
That would be season 3
The theatrical version is much better.
I disagree - Rice is a jerk in the theatrical version. The added scenes don't really add to the story.
That was the problem with the Vietnam War.. South Vietnam was so infested with VC and a means for infiltration from the north
