    This is one of the nastiest tracks David has ever recorded. 1.Outside as an album is quite the adventure. Reeves Gabrels played the lead guitar here, and Mike Garson played the keys. Gail Ann Dorsey on bass guitar. This song is about a detective named Nathan Adler trying to investigate a person who murders others as a form of art, called The Artist/The Minotaur. Ramona is his assistant, and the two are both suspected of being the murderer, rather than a man named Leon Blank, who they try to pin it on. Nathan is always present in the songs about The Minotaur himself, and it's generally interpreted that he has a split personality and doesn't realize he's the murderer. It's a very cinematic record. You'll definitely love it.

      Outside is so good, yet so few people know it! I love that he reviewed this song. Maybe more folks will find the album.

      Outside was supposed to be the first album of another three album collaboration between Bowie and Brian Eno. Obviously and unfortunately, David moved on to other things after this, so it never happened.

      @@michaelminch5490, my regret regarding this knowledge is that 'hours...' has little cohesion to it. It's composed of repurposed scraps from the Omikron: The Nomad Soul video game soundtrack.

    I’m so thrilled someone else requested Heart's Filthy Lesson!!!
    The entire album leans towards industrial rock and this song show it live but even much more so in album version - it was largely influenced by the work of Trent Reznor (Nince Inch Nails) and how they came to be working together for a while for a while.

    Great selection. I love it when reviewers step outside the box and review a song that was not one of his top 5 singles. Bowie's catalog is so rich and diverse. I had never seen this particular performance, so thank you for bringing it to my attention. Great video.

    This is from his 1.Outside album which was also written as a concept album where he developed characters & also used a self portrait he had painted for the cover art. He was touring with NIN around then as well, you should check out "I'm Afraid of Americans" with Reznor in the video. Another great tune from this album is "Hallo Spaceboy" which he does a really fantastic live version of at his 50th birthday celebration concert at MSQ in 1997. If I find the link, I will leave it for anyone interested. 👍

      Love this album and didn’t make the connection at the time with Reznor even though I was actively a fan of both at the time…. Life construction reasons, I just recognized he was expanding more into and doing his Slammin' job of it at indistrial stylings. I wondered years later and then realized/saw that yeah he and Reznor were in contact and working together and influence was now flowing both ways where Bowie was continuing his constant experiementation….
      Such an amazing album and, for me, especially this song came out of it. Love that album.

    • @chrisf.7980
      @chrisf.7980 3 года назад +3

      Me too, I think this album is way overlooked. Bowie pushed himself into new directions for several reasons & it took some effort to win over a new audience. BTW, Reznor attributes Bowie for helping him get through his addiction issues.

    • @chrismeadows4216

      The album is magnificent when listened to all the way through. A rough thing to do because of the length, but it all feels right by the end. A lot of fans swear by the Leon Tapes, but I think the album is phenomenal as is, and there's perfect validity in things being mysterious. The narrative is really thought-provoking. Obviously, it's the most daring thing he'd recorded after the '80s. For me, a masterpiece.

    I had never seen this track live, such a great performance! ... the style is very particular (even for Bowie's standards) because the songs from the album "Outside" represent perspectives of different fictional characters in a futuristic noir novel (eg. Ramona is one of these characters) ... So many things about this video: the bassist (Gail Ann Dorsey) is wearing a masquerade mask with a crucifix which reminds me a lot to the image of a black woman on Nine Inch Nails' video for "Closer"; Mike Garson's piano solo is on point too, just like in the version of the track in Bowie's "Outside" (where this track can be found). Mike also plays a great piano solo on NIN's "Just like you imagined". Finally, David's coat in this performance is the same featured on the cover of his album "Earthling", which was being toured on '96. As others mentioned in the comments, "Hallo Spaceboy" is another track from the same album which had a nice dance remix featuring the Pet Shop Boys. Another personal favorite from "Outside" is "Thru' These Architects Eyes".

    One of my favorite Bowie song from one of my favorite album, thanks so much ! It's great to hear a live version, but I'm sure you'd find the keys on is one are less "off" on the studio version : the orchestration there are out-of-this-world (courtesy of Brian Eno, of course ! ).Still, haunting, dark and addictive.

      Bowie released a mix of HFL with Trent but I think it does a disservice to Outside’s producers and musicians to claim it was all influenced by Trent. 😉

    • @clareparfittwinchester5244
      @clareparfittwinchester5244 3 года назад

      That is questionable. Trent Reznor and NIN, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, were all very influenced by and huge fans of David Bowie. Bowie toured with NIN, and may possibly have done that in an attempt to raise his profile with the then young. On the other hand, Bowie danced to his own tune, so he might just have done those concerts for kicks, learning, having a blast.

    Ohh nice. The live versions of "Heart's Filthy Lesson" are 🔥. The song breaks alot of rules.
    It's pretty amazing - Bowie's 90s albums _Outside_ and _Earthling_ - have aged spectacularly well. They didn't make much impact when originally released 25 years ago, in part because they were weird & didn't fit into any existing box or genre. But you hear them today & they make sense, predicting a number of contemporary artists.
    Bowie did same with _Low_ and _Heroes_ in 1977. Modern music has still not progressed beyond those albums.
